You walk into a pagan temple, the image they worship is front and center. This is what all of the early church polemic against images is about. It is not about Christian icons. Obvious to anyone who has actually been to a pagan temple IRL.

The Old Testament has anathemas. The New Testament has anathemas. The Early Church has anathemas. The Ecumenical Councils has anathemas. If your "church" no longer anathematizes anything (Protestants, Roman Catholics, etc), you are *NOT* the Church.

@ScriptoriumP Been years since I have read the book, so I forget his comments on Ethiopia. But essentially the southern ("upper") parts of Egypt apostatized last. Ethiopia should theoretically be last. Islam probably also prevented the regular sending of Copt bishops to Ethiopia for a time.

@Taxevader288 Yes. Realism is a style of art. It is in of itself not bad. It is the removal of symbolism that conveys theological realities and the direction of onlookers to aspects of the art not about those realities which is problematic.
