Outraged at Huw Edwards taking his 400K salary, while suspended, as he’s still too unwell to engage in the internal investigation?
YES - that’s employment law and how it works. It’s designed to protect all employed people like Huw, you and me.
You prefer the alternative?

David, I'm just one person, but I've always found you impeccable and full of integrity. From your clinical practice, neurological opinions, your medial ethics, through to your positive activism.
I’m on some radio news today explaining how work (and the commute in) won’t be much fun for many people after July 19th.
Public & workplace health promo doesn’t run on “individual’s common sense” - I’ve been in Occ Health for over 20yrs and I still get it wrong too.
I’ve been lecturing at Unis for 20yrs but it STILL floats my boats when students say how much they enjoy my teaching or if they liked a session. Best part of my job.
My beautiful boy turns 18 today. I’m a very proud dad. He’s healthy, smart, kind and a good natured lad. He’s a handsome devil too. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FIN!

A reminder that work shouldn’t make people sick…physical ill-health can be caused by depression/anxiety… “all in the mind” doesn’t mean symptoms are ‘made up’… some jobs make illness worse… stress should not be tolerated…nobody’s health should be worse after a day of work
Thanks
@MyBCU
- I only came to UCE in 2002 as a temporary move - and I’ve never left.
Would like to think I’ve done my bit to help students, colleagues and the wider Uni in that time.
Just encountered possibly the most officious and over zealous ticket inspector EVER (a rich seam I know) on a Virgin train. Left me alone, but had his ‘fun’ with a single female & then an asian family of 4 from overseas. Petty ticket issues. I had to have a word of course. . .
And as many people switch off for the weekend, be aware that next week is Mental Heath Awareness week in the UK. If you're dreading work come Sunday night, now is a great time to make a change and fix things. Talk to someone

Learn from this
Ordered Katsu chicken & rice.
All out of rice.
Offered chicken and chips.
Accepted.
Gal on the till forced to charge me a chip-supplement.
I argue my legal right to compensatory chips in lieu of rice.
Gal concedes.
Victory is mine.
Don’t mess - I’m on fire.
It was a real treat last night to meet up with some former students who’ve gone on to do great things since leaving Uni. It’s nice how they remember their tutors for the little things we did. I feel like I’m 107 yrs old, but happy.

Still marking season for many academics. You can have standards; you can set a high bar; and you can expect better from your students. All the above can be done while still being kind.
You can make the choice to be a kind academic and not an unhelpful arsey one.
Was a genuine pleasure and an honour to read out the names of many of the
@BCUsocscience
graduates today. Sorry if I got any names wrong. Well done to you all, and enjoy your celebrations

- I still can’t get the hang of it!
I’m not part of the shenanigans below of course, but in addition to the studies and hard work, this too is what being a student should be about. The freedom and headspace to just sit on the grass if you want to.
Terrible photo (my fault) but great crowd at
@LincolnDrill
tonight for The Myth of Serial Killer Profiling. Sorry for the impromptu longer show

I do appreciate I’m being a nuisance while I get YOU’RE CRAZY PROF off the ground and I’m amazed at not being unfollowed in droves for posting the links endlessly. I’m just trying to get something going. Thank you.
Today, someone who’s opinion I trust unfailingly, told me “You don’t appreciate how gifted you really are. You just think you work hard”.
Isn’t that a sweet thing to say.
Thank you.

paramedics who attended today to help my mum. I didn’t get their names but the lads were both a true credit to their profession.
You know that one student who never speaks and doesn't interact. When they actually put their hand up in class and offer a suggestion, that's my pay earned!
Last night I dreamt my university expanded into the smoked salmon market. My job was to show students how to de-bone smoked salmon and put slices into packets for shipping. I excelled at it.
Oh the empty stage…
Always a bit nervy before the gig
Who will come?
Who won’t come?
Will it just be me?

In universities, we rarely tell other academics how smart or bright they are. Strange really, as that is a vital currency between academics. Letting someone know that their intelligence is appreciated can do wonders.
Phoned council to arrange removal of a rogue mattress left in the street.
“As part of your complaint, I have to ask if you think this is a hate-crime?”
If it were, then it’s a very subtle format.
We are pleased to announce our next event speaker, Dr. Daniela Varley, the Director of Recere8 - a social enterprise that is helping to rehabilitate lives of young people by focusing on drama, art & empathy.

These Tory drug-confessions make me feel like I’ve lived a very dull and boring life. Opium at weddings. Coke at parties. I’m happy with cheese n pineapple on a stick.
Tutors!
"Students may not care how much you know
until they know how much you care"
This can include caring about them as individuals, a collective, or even about the subject you teach / preach.
Having a little passion goes a VERY long way.
Are you still passionate?
I decided to spend December’s ‘donut-money for colleagues’ on 3 tonnes of noodles for the student food bank instead. I’m not sure that will be the popular choice in the dept. Sorry

Trying not to get big-headed here, but having my “You’re Crazy Professor” podcast ranked as the 32nd most popular True Crime podcast in Uganda* right now is an achievement I never thought I’d live to see. Thank you Ugandans.

“The small number of Lucy Letby fan-pages, while distasteful, are nothing new or anything to worry about. ‘Raoul Moat RIP You Legend’ had 80K Facebook followers in 2010. Its just immaturity” my comments in full here:

First week in the new job. Had a hissy fit in the stationery cupboard, threatened the janitorial staff with redundancy, and now trying to get my dodgy brother a job here. Going well.
Parental support:
Me: If I ever get offered an OBE or something, should I accept or decline it?
Mum: Not likely is it.
Me: Why not? Lots of people in my field get them. So should I accept one?
Mum: I refer you to my previous answer.
That’s cold!
Huge thanks to everyone who came to the Myths of Profiling opener last night and the great staff at

As a fortysomething prof I stopped listening to the wilfully ignorant.
As a fiftysomething prof I just CBA being around the wilfully ignorant.
