I can't blame
#Yotes
players for not wanting to go to SLC. They'll be playing in a dilapidated 33 year old building that seats 11k many with obstructed views. They'll play there for multiple years until an arena is built. How is that better than a brand new 4600 arena? It isn't.
Plus Phoenix metro is a far bigger area than metro SLC. What's an extra year at the Mullett compared to Salt Lake's situation? Hopefully the
@NHL
will come to their senses and agree.
#Yotes
Wow! Mesa Mayor Giles said he does not foresee any site picked by the
#Yotes
that would require a public vote because the land would be privately owned. That's HUGE news! I feel a whole lot better now!
Speculation is Meruelo will by the land then sell the rights to the name/trademarks to someone who would buy the team and then Alex would lease whatever buildings including the arena that are built on the land. I think
#Yotes
fans would be happy if someone else owned the team.
Just watched
@ToddWalsh
farewell to hockey in AZ. Tears flowing. No one captures the moment the way you do. You always have the right words. I know you'll continue working on
#Dbacks
baseball but we'll really miss your coverage of the
#Yotes
. You're the best, Todd! "God speed".
And of course it had to be left to GM Bill Armstrong to break the news the
#Yotes
will be gone after the final game on April 17th. Alex Meruelo and Xavier Gutierrez are too gutless to tell them to their faces.
Holy shit! If this is even partially correct Ryan Smith is a complete snake and Gary Bettman isn't much better. Again who knows if this is true if it is Alex Meruelo honestly is the victim here. Sure hope we learn the truth!
#Yotes
If Meruelo wins the auction he's going to have to spend $68 million minimum. Then build a $3 billion dollar arena and entertainment district for the
#Yotes
. He's not asking for public money for any of it. The land is generating 0 income right now. The project will generate 1/2
I hate to say it but if the
#Yotes
do in fact leave I won't be following them anymore and I won't be rooting for them. I wouldn't be able to bear seeing them succeed in another market when it should be happening here in AZ.
I agree
@CraigSMorgan
and the
@PHNX_Coyotes
crew have by far the biggest reach among
#Yotes
fans of any media outlet in town. They know all there is to know about this team. Alex Meruelo needs to come on the show if he wants to convince Yotes fans why they should support him.
Where was the due diligence byBettman and his staff in the
@NHL
in researching this clown? Not a good job. Hopefully if we ever are fortunate enough to get an expansion team in AZ in the future you'll do a lot more due diligence. Some of this is on you and the league, Gary B!
It's been my feeling since I moved here that by and large the media here is too lazy to learn about hockey enough to cover the sport. Most don't know the sport and don't take the time to learn about it enough to cover it. That's too bad.
#Yotes
Well after listening to most of this it's over.
#Yotes
will be playing their last game in AZ April 18 and are moving to Salt Lake City for the start of next season. Thank you to Alex Meruelo and the NHL for stringing us along and lying to us. This has been in works for some time
Whether the Reddit post was legit or not the beginning of the end for the
#Yotes
was the failed Tempe vote last May. Even if Smith contributed to the "no" campaign it was on Alex to do whatever it took to make sure it passed. Once it failed Bettman was looking at other options.
Wow! Just listened. OMG! This is way worse than I thought possible. Meruelo hoodwinked the players, the coaches, his employees, the media, and most of all the
#Yotes
fans. I don't see Meruelo ever owning an
@NHL
franchise anywhere, certainly not in AZ again. Nobody will trust him
Except that it wasn't Alex Meruelo or even Xavier Gutierrez who told the team. GM Bill Armstrong had to fly across the country having to leave the Frozen Four to tell them. Meruelo was never going to tell them to their faces. Gutless coward!
#Yotes
Look like
#Yotes
ownership planned on keeping the relocation hidden from the players and staff, and only met with the team today because the story got leaked to the media and the team found out from the media.
(via
@FriedgeHNIC
)
I really hope the closer we get to June 27th the more people come on board in the hopes that Alex Meruelo gets this done. I sound like a broken record but I'm no spring chicken and he's by far my best shot at seeing
#Yotes
2.0 in my lifetime.
Since this summer the
#Yotes
gained a multi-billionaire owner, Phil Kessel, Taylor Hall and 1st place in the Pacific div. Who had all that happening? Not I. Amazing time to be a
#Coyotes
fan!
The good thing in all of this is that aside from the naysayers who have always hated the idea of NHL hockey in AZ there seems to be a broad consensus among fans, players and media around the country that hockey does indeed belong in AZ!
#Yotes
Thankfully as
@CraigSMorgan
mentioned in this article the
#Yotes
will NOT pick any arena site or arrangement that requires a public vote. Thank God for that. The voters here in AZ are so easily swayed by lies and misinformation.
Also Florida has all 4 major sports just like Arizona does (did) and the Panthers play in a warm weather nontraditional hockey market just like the
#Yotes
do (did). Again it proves if you have good ownership and you're a well run team you can succeed in a nontraditional market.
Admittedly Alex alienated most
#Yotes
fans, stakeholders and media but honestly he's are only shot at getting another team any time soon. It will take lots of mending fences and fans won't come around right away but I say we give him a chance to win the auction and go from there.
I've got a wishful solution. The
@RoadrunnersAHL
move up to Tempe and play at Mullett. The
@ArizonaCoyotes
offer Glendale a sweetheart deal to play at Desert Diamond until their new arena is built in NE Phoenix. This quiets the NHLPA BOG's concerns about playing at Mullett.
If Meruelo builds a brand new state of the art arena closer to the fan base as fans, the media and the NHL have been endlessly clamoring for that will go a long way toward rebuilding the trust of
#Yotes
fans!
The
@ArizonaCoyotes
deserve our support. They are giving a terrific effort night. They're getting great goaltending and they have been in every game until the very end the last few weeks. Great to see.
#Yotes
Sadly it sounds like
@CraigSMorgan
doesn't think
#Yotes
2.0 is going to happen as quickly as most fans think. His dream scenario is a Shane Doan led local investment group that brings an expansion team back to AZ. Most Yotes fans would agree.
I've come to the conclusion that the only way
#Yotes
2.0 returns in less than 8-10 years is that after 3.5 years when Meruelo loses his exclusive rights, Mat Ishbia with investors pays for expansion franchise and the team joins the
#Suns
to play at a renovated Footprint Center.
I commented on the proposal for the arena and development and I urge every
#Yotes
fan to do so as well. This looks like an incredible proposal paid for with $1.7 billion in private financing with 0 risk to the taxpayer. This would be built on what is now a dump site 1/2
@CoyotesAvs12
@CityofPhoenixAZ
As long as the NHL is here I’ll support the yotes I may be upset right now but if AM puts a good team on the ice and follows through with a stadium I’ll be there game 1 and probably before then! Just want to see him follow through
Just watched
@ToddWalsh
interview of
@NBjugstad72
. It brought a tear to my eye. He's been a leader of this team and after he was traded at the deadline last season he wanted to come back signing a 2 year contract. He's been one of our best players. He's a great human!
#Yotes
If fans don't support Meruelo and don't indicate that they'll go to games or nearby restaurants and other entertainment once they're built why would the
@CityofPhoenixAZ
give them the support he needs to make this work? They won't so we need to show them we will go to games etc.
The Scottsdale mayor said Meruelo is building an entertainment district "disguised as a hockey arena". Are you kidding, mayor? The only way Meruelo makes money is by building the entertainment/real estate etc. surrounding the arena. The mayor is so naive. 😃
#Yotes
Today is the day bids are due for Tempe's proposed arena/stadium/development complex. Best of luck to Alex Meruelo and his group. May you have the winning bid.
@ArizonaCoyotes
#Coyotes
I feel badly for
@leahmerrall
,
@spetershockey
and the entire
@PHNX_Coyotes
staff. I could see
@CraigSMorgan
writing a book about the history of the
#Yotes
and I could see it becoming a best seller. No sports franchise on earth has gone through all this and he has been here 1/2
The way the
@ArizonaCoyotes
fought their hearts out every night this season despite the lack of talent & so many injuries makes me want to support this team even more. I will drive from the west side of town to Tempe as much as I can to see this team play. Who's with me?
#Yotes
One year ago today (May 16th):
Tempe voters rejected the Arizona Coyotes. The proposal to build a new arena and entertainment district failed: 56% no, 44% yes. One of the final nails in the franchise's coffin.
👇 This is what could have been. Instead, the land is still a dump.
Sign the petition and pass along. We must keep the
#Yotes
in AZ.
@Tempegov
Approve the Arizona Coyotes for Their New Tempe Arena - Sign the Petition! via
@Change
The
#Coyotes
have need a pure sniper forever and they finally have one and people are complaining. Kessel is a point machine and he's very durable. Plus he's tied up for 3 more years. Galchenyuk can become an FA after next season. This is a win.
Alex Meruelo can be faulted for many things but he was done a terrific job of rebuilding the
#Yotes
org by hiring the right people to run things. BA has proven to be a great hire and Meruelo has provided him with the financial tools necessary to build the team into a 1/3
Hmm! Another potential site for a new
#Yotes
arena. It's good to see that there are already possible new sites emerging after the no vote in Tempe. I am definitely more encouraged than I was yesterday morning.
Thank you, Gary! "This is a terrific market" with lots of fans and it's the "5th largest market in the country". The NHL is in much better shape financially than 20 years ago and less likely to move a franchise. "We will exhaust all options before we decide to relocate".
#Yotes
Speaking of misinformation from media here re: the
#Yotes
when comparing the Tempe failed vote to the current situation
@CamCox12
on ch. 12 last night asked "why will this be any different"? Um, Cam there was a referendum in Tempe. It failed. There will NOT be one in NE Phx!
About half way through they talk to Tyson Nash about losing the
#Yotes
. All Coyotes fans should listen. You can take it with a grain of salt but Tyson said Alex Meruelo called him and said "100% I'm buying the land". He said it will take 5 yrs but he will bring a team back to AZ.
When the deal with AM and the NHL was announced like many I really wanted him to succeed as I thought he was the quickest path to bring
#Yotes
back. But after hearing well respected insiders like Craig Morgan and Rich Nairn outline what an awful owner he was I changed my mind.
I don't want to hear any more talk about Alex Meruelo and all the shoulda, coulda wouldas. They'll be plenty of time to dissect that in the coming days. Tonight is all about the
#Yotes
as it should be!
Alex was rarely seen in the 5 years he owned the team. Now all of a sudden is doing interviews on every outlet in town. He needs to do this but
#Yotes
fans wonder why didn't he do this a lot sooner. We might still have the team. Learning from mistakes in Yotes 2.0? I hope so.
So the city of Glendale is willing to sell their arena for $45 million to ASM while still owing $120 million on it but they weren't willing to offer the same deal to the
#Yotes
? That's pathetic but it's very typical of how they treated the Coyotes while they were in Glendale.
1 thing is certain once the NHL announces Meruelo is out any interested group needs to start working immediately on plans for the arena, partnerships etc. because if they wait we will be left out of the next expansion which will likely be 2 teams and Atlanta already has a leg up.
We are so lucky to have
@CraigSMorgan
in our town covering the
@ArizonaCoyotes
. He is the most thorough and balanced reporter I've ever read. I really hope he never leaves this market.
#Yotes
Having the
@RoadrunnersAHL
play some games in Tucson and some in Tempe makes a lot of sense. You definitely do not want to alienate the dedicated fans in Tucson while you are still able to keep a hockey presence in the Valley. It's a win-win. I hope this happens.
If the
@RoadrunnersAHL
relocate to Tempe and start playing games at the Mullett I will not attend any games. I don't want to get excited about prospects only to see them leave for SLC once they play in the NHL. I will only support
@SunDevilHockey
!
If Meruelo has any chance of getting what he wants from the city and any chance of getting
#Yotes
fans on his side he needs to remove his son from a position of authority and hire a guy with sports business experience preferably with local ties in an advisory capacity NOW.
If it wouldn't require a public vote that would speed up the process exponentially plus they wouldn't have to pay for remediation of a landfill, another savings of time and money. A site in Mesa could actually turn out to be as good or better than Tempe after all.
#Yotes
Based on how the
#Yotes
players have been treated here by Meruelo I will definitely root for them in SLC. They don't deserve this treatment. My 2nd favorite team after the
#Avs
will be the SLC whoever's. I didn't think I would but after listening to the podcast I definitely will.
I have to get off Twitter for the night. I did enough venting but if I stay on here any longer my depression will only deepen. Til then, all the best to you fellow
#Yotes
fans. I'm hurting right along with you.
So Ryan Smith is asking the state for $54 million+++ to finance his new arena. Meanwhile Alex Meruelo is paying $68 million+ just for the land and another $2-3 billion to construct an arena and additional entertainment options. He's only asking for a "theme park" district.
#Yotes
A public records request revealed some of Ryan Smith’s upcoming ask to SLC government:
- $54 million/year for 30 years in sales tax
- Adding additional public funding in the form of taxpayer increment financing at the stadium district
- a heliport
- more
My hope and dream is that a Shane Doan led ownership group either in conjunction with Mat Ishbia or other investors puts together a bid for an expansion NHL franchise for the Phx metro area. The sooner the better. I'm already tired of hearing about UtahHC.
$ millions for the state most of it going to fund education. Asking the
@CityofPhoenixAZ
to have his project placed in a taxing district in which no one pays a dime unless they use the facilities seems like a very reasonable request. 2/2
If a Shane Doan led investment group were to bring an expansion team back that would be great but if we had to wait 10 yrs or so for it to happen I'm not so sure. Personally I want to see
#Yotes
2.0 within 5-6 years because of my age and to keep my interest level in the team.
As we approach the Arizona Coyotes' anticipated last home game in Arizona on April 17, before their relocation to Salt Lake City, the Town of Fountain Hills will illuminate the fountain for the 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m. runs in Coyote colors, symbolizing our shared support and
As much as it pains me I won't be watching any of the Salt Lake City hockey games. I will always cheer for the players, coaches, GM and staff but I will be doing it from afar. It will be way too painful to watch.
#Yotes
So if I did the math right the
#AZCardinals
, Phoenix
#Suns
, AZ
#Dbacks
and AZ
#Yotes
have 1 combined championship in 210 seasons. No wonder we have such depressed fans. Lol!
When are we going to hear from the
@ArizonaCoyotes
on this? The sooner the better because any trust they still had would be completely lost if they don't talk soon.
#Yotes
I will definitely watch these last 2 games by the
#Yotes
which will be their last games for this team and this city. The tickets to the last home game ever next Wednesday should be the hottest tickets in town. I will be cheering them on just as I will in Salt Lake!
Wanted to clear some things up for all the people that love
@PHNX_Coyotes
.
1. Their coverage will go on for the time being until we solidify a date that makes sense.
2. We are still looking at covering hockey to some degree, working the details as we speak.
3.
@leahmerrall
,
Thread: I've had a roller coaster of emotions since last Monday. Hard to believe it was only last Monday when we saw Servalli's article the NHL was making 2 schedules for next season and a
#Yotes
sale/relocation was likely. Because Servalli has been talking about the team 1/8
Our 3rd string goalie gives up only 2 goals to one of the highest scoring teams in the league. Michael Grabner can't even crack the lineup right now. That's some serious depth.
#Yotes
Whoever advised Alex Meruelo to hire Bill Armstrong as the GM should make all the hiring decisions for
#Yotes
2.0 if we're lucky enough to get another chance. That was by far the best hire he made as the owner.
Would you rather have Alex (no people skills) Meruelo owning the
#Yotes
2.0 or a different owner with a proven track record of success in sports? Easy answer for me.
This is a good time to be a
#Yotes
fan! Sean Durzi, Jason Zucher, Nick Bjugstad, Logan Cooley & now Matt Dumba to go along with Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz, Matias Maccelli, Barrett Hayton & Lawson Crouse.The Coyotes will be much improved this season. Can't wait to watch them.
Hope no one forgets about Anthony Leblanc,
@HedgeyeDJ
, Gary Drummond, the late George Gosbee and the other ICE AZ owners who saved this franchise back in 2013. Without them this day would not be possible.
#Coyotes
If FA's know a brand new arena is on the way in Tempe the
#Yotes
should have no trouble enticing them to sign. Also by the time the arena is built in 3/4 years the Coyotes should be extremely competitive if BA continues on the path he's on. The outlook has never been brighter.
I said I was getting off Twitter but 1 more thing: I feel like all
#Yotes
fans who feel as devastated as I do should start some kind of support group. On a smaller scale this is like losing a loved one and we need some kind of support group to get through these rough times IMO.
Yikes! Last I checked Alex Meruelo isn't looking for $1 billion in public funding. Maybe he is an actual billionaire unlike your conclusion that Ryan Smith is not.
#Yotes
Opinion: "Ryan Smith is a billionaire who needs a billion more dollars to complete this project that will earn him billions of dollars. Which leads me to what I believe is a logical conclusion — he is not, in fact, a billionaire."
I don't give a damn what name the Utah team uses. I don't care what their mascot looks like and I don't care what Smith says about anything. I don't care who they draft or who they sign. I'll watch a few games and root for the players that played here. That's it. Bitter? Yes!
This was a VERY eye opening public letter. This isn't from a bitter outsider. This is from someone who was in the "room" for many years and has strong connections in the
#Yotes
org. Mr. Meruelo, please listen to what Petey said and show you care about the fans and this community
✏️✍️📝 As the
@PHNX_Coyotes
show becomes “inactive” i had the time to reflect and put my thoughts into an open letter to AZ Coyotes owner, Alex Meruelo.
As a former employee, i wanted to make sure that those that didnt have a voice could be heard.
#Yotes
fans should not be surprised. They signed a bunch of washed up vets on expiring contracts, traded one of the best goalies in the NHL, traded their best offensive forward, traded their captain & released a bunch of other vets. You had to know it would be like this.
I'd obviously prefer the
#Yotes
stay in AZ. We're building a great team with a great organization and fans are attached to these players. I understand their frustration. I feel the same. I just feel expansion is better than losing NHL hockey forever.
@ArizonaCoyotes
Alex if you want to win over the
#Yotes
fans come on
@PHNX_Coyotes
and talk with
@CraigSMorgan
. He'll ask tough questions as he does with everyone but he will fair. He won't attack you. The sooner you come on the better.
