As a blind person, I rely on @RMTunion workers every time I travel, to assist me on/off trains and around stations. I support striking workers wholeheartedly, in part because they facilitate my independence, but also because it’s the right thing to do — enough really is enough ✊

I’m a 3rd year undergrad at @UniofOxford , and part of possibly the most disrupted uni year group in recent times, studying throughout a global pandemic, multiple lockdowns, and now a cost of living crisis. But guess what? I support the @UCU strikes wholeheartedly. Here’s why. 1/

I achieved that 2.1 from Oxford without proper disability support, during a pandemic, and alongside Co-Chairing the most radical youth & student movement in England & Wales, leading on work which saw us double the number of elected Young Greens. So no, actually. I’m thrilled 💅

The marketisation of higher education is a threat to students and staff alike. With a neoliberal ideology destroying the sector, universities put profits first, people later. Whether we’re teaching or learning, all of us in seminar rooms and lecture theatres are losing out. 3/

Unmanageable workloads, casualisation — especially for post-graduate researchers —, and stagnant pay: it’s unacceptable, unfair, and unnecessary. These conditions are unsustainable, but they also fail students, preventing teaching staff from offering the best for students. 4/

Many post-grad students also teach, working on casual contracts which are fundamentally exploitative, and fail to compensate them for their time. Yet, with a total lack of financial support for students at the best of times — let alone now —, the power lies squarely with VCs. 5/

#TuitionFees are an active contributor to sustained and deepening socioeconomic inequality — true when they were introduced by @UKLabour in the late 90s, even more so now that they top £9000 a year. Let me explain. 🧵

I am taking a mental health day today — sat in a nice chair by my open window (finally fixed, presumably because my uni room was rented out over the holiday), reading my book, and people watching over Broad Street. Do I have time for this? No. Am I doing it anyway? Yes. Yes I am.

Engaging in right-wing culture wars, manufactured to divide already-marginalised communities and break solidarity in the intersectional fight for social, racial, economic, and climate justice, is not a vehicle to this end.   6/7

So please, don’t call us unlucky — it’s far too generous. We are the result of decisions made for the benefit of profit, not people — a demonstration of what happens when public goods are commodified and destroyed beyond recognition. Hold them accountable. 7/

I’m blind, looking for work. I promise, if I could find accessible work, with an employer both willing (in spite of ableist Tory rhetoric) and able to support me, I’d take it in a heartbeat. I’m now nothing short of petrified. How am I supposed to live? #AutumnBudget #Disability

It’s hard to explain the fear of getting into a taxi at gone midnight as a blind person, after the driver has tried to refuse your guide dog, before starting an invasive line of questioning about how much you can see whilst driving you to (you hope) where you want to go @001Taxis

🚨 BREAKING: Keir Starmer personally confirms that Labour has abandoned its commitment to trans rights, stating that "a woman is an adult female". He also ruled out self-ID for trans people.

@ShahrarAli And I trust that our @TheGreenParty peers, @GreenJennyJones and @natalieben , will vote in accordance with party policy and Green values, and oppose this amendment vehemently.

OK, so *that* article in The Observer today. I’m not going to share it here because I don’t think it warrants promotion, but it’s focussed on the Conservatives’ flip flopping over their 2018 pledge to #BanConversionTherapy — the saga that never ends. 1/

Brianna Ghey Say her name, and remember it. Say her name, and know that her murder is the result of words, and of actions, and of transphobia. That her murder is the result of political choices. That words and bigotry and hatred don’t exist in a vacuum. Brianna, I’m sorry 💔

A 16yo trans girl, Brianna Ghey, has been stabbed to death in Warrington. Allegations are circulating of years of transphobic bullying leading up to this. Horrified. Rest up sis.

. @TheGreenParty is fundamentally rooted in the struggle for liberation — that is something we must never forget. Members have voted through policy time and time again, speaking loud and clear: Trans liberation now 💚🏳️‍⚧️✊

Today we’ve heard from @RishiSunak , too scared to call a #GeneralElectionNow , and from @Keir_Starmer , too weak to offer an alternative to Conservative chaos. Start 2024 with hope, and build the alternative for people & planet. Join @TheGreenParty today 💚

I usually wouldn’t comment on speculation. But it’s important to highlight the impact of an autumn election on students — many of whom will have moved into new accommodation for the academic year, and thus are likely to have failed to #RegisterToVote .

This isn’t bad luck, some act of fate. These are deliberate and calculated choices, made by the Tories, and bye the profit-driven VCs they have empowered, to gut education, hollow it out, and transform it into a neoliberal commodity — a system in which money comes first. 5/

We believe that this hustings event is destined to create yet another toxic space for the manufactured debate over trans rights, furthering a harmful environment for trans and non-binary members.   2/7

Ahead of May’s local elections, @nusuk are running an unprecedented voter registration drive, in light of new laws which make it more difficult for young people to have our voices heard on polling day. It’s vital that students aren’t able to be ignored.

3rd year @TrinityOxford students live off-site, approx 30 mins walk away from college. My request to move in a few days early, to familiarise myself and my guide dog with the new area/routes, has... 👍 Been granted 👎 At a cost of £19 per night. Ableism is alive and well, folks.

There are just a couple of days left to vote in @TheGreenParty ’s internal elections. The past 48 hours have reaffirmed what we already knew: that our new Deputy Leader, and GPEx members, must be more than simply trans inclusive: they must fight with us for trans liberation. 1/
