This ex-D3 athlete became an NFL quarterback whisperer đ David Girardi was once an overlooked Division III quarterback. In 30 career starts at Geneva College, he threw for 5,997 yards and 37 touchdowns. But before he knew it, his playing days were coming to an end. âWhen youâre young, you always want to play the game as long as you can,â Girardi said. âYou have visions of being a player (in the NFL). Then, you realize itâs not cut out for everybody. Then, whatâs the next alternative?â For David, the answer was obvious: coaching. In 2011, he started as a graduate assistant at D2 Seton Hill University. He paid his dues and slowly climbed the ladder: ⢠Division II grad assistant ⢠Division III QB coach ⢠Division I quality control coach and defensive assistant ⢠Division I QB coach Then one day, his phone rang. âHey David, itâs Andy Reid.â At first, he mustâve thought it was a prank. But it turned out to be very real. His former co-worker, Mike Kafka, had recommended him for a quality control job with the Chiefs. Now 7 seasons deep into his NFL coaching career, David Girardi is quickly running out of fingers for his Super Bowl rings. âYou grow when you are uncomfortable,â he said in 2019. âI've been at five places in eight years, at all different levels, coaching both offense and defense, and I've grown because of it. It's laid a solid foundation for me to build upon."
