@UDHoops
is heading to St. Louis to face Illinois College (23-4) in the first round on Friday (TBD).
This is the eighth time in program history making the NCAA Tournament and only the second time being an at-large bid.

Morning practice, day after Thanksgiving. Came out to the gym to find the guys, on their own, had already finished one drill & were into the 2nd. No instructions. No practice plan. They know what’s expected. I’ve always said it: Player led > Coach led.

#WhatItTakes
No coach bats 1.000 in recruiting, & most times “No’s” are due to reasons outside our control. After a call this morning from a recruit who took a scholarship from the school his brother attends, I received an email from said recruit’s dad & I know we do things the right way.
Excited to announce that I have joined the men’s basketball coaching staff as an Assistant Coach at the University of Dubuque (
@udhoops
)! Blessed to be given the opportunity to work alongside
@udbasketball
and
@ajbollis24
.
I won't stop saying it. The "First Four" should be at-large teams only. Stop putting AQ's in those games. The mid & low majors who worked so hard to have a chance to dance shouldn't have to play in, what is essentially, a play-in game.
Advice for young people who want to coach college ball (or thinking they might), if you get a chance, even at part-time salary, take it. Once you're too deep into making money, or too far along in spouse/kids, the jobs available to make the jump are that much harder to take/find.
Saw a kid I kinda liked today. Then I noticed something...he played w/a great big smile. Unencumbered pure joy for the game. That energy was infectious. His teammates fed off it. He clearly loved to play. He made our list.
Get it kids?

Last year, at graduation,

handed me the 1st business card I ever gave him when we first recruited him. This year, he came back to see teammates graduate. He hands me his new business card, framed, and a note that brought tears instantly.

Contentious AAU game. Side out for Team A. Passer throws it towards the backcourt. Player from Team B jumps out of bounds in steal attempt. Passer looks at ref & says “He’s over the line.” Ref replies, “How ‘bout you use a pass fake?”
#AAUBingo
#RefIsRight
Kinda fed up with everyone saying tonight’s game will be “ugly.” Defense is not ugly. Defense is tough, sophisticated & smart. There’s as much beauty in a team’s ability to force their opponent into tough shots as there is in transition O and alley-oops.
#RespectTheWHOLEGame
I say it every year…the “First Four” games should ALWAYS be at-large teams. Conference champions deserve to play in non play-in games. Let them feel the real tournament.
Got this text from a former player today who was w/us for only a short time. Even though he chose a path that didn’t include continuing to play ball, the bond we built in a short amt of time is one I’ll always cherish. College hoops isn’t for all but impacting lives is
#WhyICoach
Walked into the gym just before 5am this morning for a 630am group workout...had one of my guys right behind me. This kid worked his way onto the team and is determined to be a factor (and he will.) This...this is why I coach.
#ProofThroughAction
Tomorrow morning at 6:15am, I will begin my 25th season of coaching basketball...my 15th at the college level and my 7th as Head Coach of
@NorthlandHoops
. Thank you to all those who have made it possible to, literally, live my dream.
#WhatItTakes
T’was the night before practice and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not...
Actually, hoping we all get a little shut-eye. At 6:15am tomorrow, we begin moving towards our goal!
#ItTakesWhatItTakes
The

#ProofThroughAction
When you arrive at
@BSUBeavers

Last night’s gut-wrenching, buzzer-beating loss in the NCAA Tournament was just devastating. Winning is always the goal, and it is what we pursue. But this message earlier in the week from one of my former players reminds me that there are other big reasons
#WhyICoach
Coaches, we will be looking to start setting up phone interviews by early next week. If you know of anyone you think would be a good fit, please send them our way!
In the gym today, one of my recent grads put his 12-year-old brother through a workout. As I watched, I heard him point out all the same details I used to grill him on. Our proudest moments as coaches are not what they do under our watch, but who they become after.
#WhatItTakes
Someone should do a statistical study about how often a kid yells “and one” and the number of those instances that it actually becomes an ‘and one.’ I could be wrong (I’m not), but my guess is it’s not a high percentage.

Just a small reminder for kids getting ready for their seasons as we approach August. You ALWAYS have freedom of choice. What you don’t have is freedom of consequence. What you do/don’t do, say/don’t say, will lead to intended & unintended results. What are you doing to be ready?
Also love this...Minnesota basketball family should be proud of Braham High School’s own
@NoahDahlman
as he brings home a Dutch Basketball Championship for
@LandstedeBasket
.
Last 4 months have been so hard. Added job duties, working to open safely, not being able to see loved ones, trying to stay virus-free, etc.
Then I get this message tonight from one of my guys. Powerful reminder of
#WhyICoach
& why I work as hard as I can for these guys.
Annual Thanksgiving for our guys who couldn’t make it home (w/incredible food made by

Last night was just crushing. Love my kids and so proud of the effort all season long. Received this text from the father of one of our guys. The support is just tremendous and it’s why I’ll never stop fighting for this family.
#WhatItTakes
Took a tough loss tonight. I know we’re really young & we have so much to learn, but it’s hard to be patient sometimes. Then I get a text for one of our guy’s father who’s been with us for 4 years. Amazing support. It’s a process. I know it. We’ve built it before. We will again.
Still think
@umacathletics
is the little brother to other local conferences?
@BLC_MensHoops
proved otherwise. Good job guys. Congrats and way to prove them wrong.
Coached this guy for 4 years. Starting PG & captain from day 1. Started every game (101 of 101). Got a GA spot for next year (secret’s out). 1 of 3 guys from our ‘17 class now coaching college ball. This weekend, got to coach with him at a camp. Incredibly honored.

Spent 2 years as D3 asst for $1k, waking at 5am everyday for a sub teaching call, taught all day, then practice, then film/recruiting. Then spent 2 years as D2 asst & served as HC for women’s tennis. Made $6k & lived in hotel. Worth EVERY struggle. Wouldn’t change a moment.
The honest truth is that life isn’t fair. Ever. The more one comes to grips with that, the quicker one can learn to respond to each struggle more effectively. Because in the end, it’s not what happens to one that matters, but how one responds that counts.

17 years ago, Coach Herman van den Belt took over as Coach of

@UOrangemen
We’re always still looking for guy who are willing to be a part of something bigger than themselves (definitely more space on our roster for forwards at this time, but willing to look at any/all film).
Then there was this text from one of my former players who sent it to me after last night’s heartbreaking end to the season. This...this is why I do/love this profession.

Us Minnesota fans: “Best half in the history of Minnesota sports! We’re unstoppable!”
Also Minnesota fans every time Denver hits a shot even though we’re up by 25:
I’m not a Bucks fan at all (grew up in Minneapolis, so it makes sense), but I’m pretty sure that, before this but even more so now, Giannis is in my top 3 NBA players. He’s tremendous in every way, on & off the court. Bucks Fans/Wisconsinites, please know how lucky you are.
Over the past 5 years or so, we've helped 3 assistants reach their next step, plus 4 student-athletes become college basketball coaches (and numerous become high school coaches) We're on the hunt for a driven, energetic, hard-working coach who's willing to learn & ready to lead.
It’s become one of the most important things we do here with
@NorthlandHoops
. Today, with the help of the amazing people at Ashland City Hall, our team voted. 1/
With the NCAA’s 1st available date to play games falling on Election Day this year (Nov. 8th), we took the opportunity to vote early today! HUGE thanks to Sarah and her incredible staff at Ashland’s City Hall for helping us fulfill our civic duty!

Thread: Tomorrow, I will, with tears in my eyes I’m sure, receive my first vaccine shot. Though not in the highest of risk groups, I am in a higher risk group of Covid (docs are concerned how my immune system would react.) 1/
If you're down 2 possessions late, the goal is to cut it to 1 poss. If a 2 will cut it to 1 poss., take the 2. If a 3 doesn't tie/take the lead for you, and you miss/have to foul, it allows your opponent to score FT's that can (in most cases) push the lead to 3 possessions.
Love receiving word that another one of our recent graduates, this one wanted to get into athletic administration, just got a GA spot in that field. That makes 5 guys in our last 2 graduating classes that will be coaching/leading in athletics this fall.

Maybe it’s a small thing, or perhaps I think too much, but I think it says something when a kid watches a batted/loose ball roll onto another court and doesn’t give any chase to it. Expecting someone else to retrieve it.

Never too late. If I’m up, I answer. If not, I’ll get at them the next day (side note: I tell recruits I’m 24 hours. That said, I do sleep at times. Had a Cali kid call me at 1am w/a question on the application. He forgot about the 2 hour time change…I still took the call.)
@UOrangemen
Play without the ball. Moving, cutting, screening, spacing. Create space for yourself/teammate without the ball. Make good decisions when you get the ball. No rule says you must dribble upon catch, & please don’t take 32 dribbles to move 2 feet.

The shot will, justifiably, be remembered. But what shouldn’t be forgotten is the fight to get there. Down 13 w/6:30 left, down 8 w/1:29 left, this team found a way. They believed. Never gave up. Stayed together.

Our 7th graduation was emotional as ever. 6 family members moving on, inc. 2 who fought alongside us for 4 years & 1 young man who’s been a part of my family since his soph. year of HS. There is NOTHING I wouldn’t do for any of them...for the rest of their lives
#WhyICoach
Wasn’t sure I’d be able to coach in this game. Really glad things worked out the way they did to allow me to be on the sidelines tonight. Thanks to all for the support over the past few months!
#OwnIt
Not sure I’ve ever been a part of a comeback quite like it. Kinda surreal. Although a majority of the production came from freshmen & sophomores, our 3 seniors set the example by taking 4 charges in the 2nd half. True team effort. Starting to really fall in love with this group.
Down 23 with 16:13 in the game, and down 9 with 3:02 to play, our young group just kept fighting. They dug deep within themselves to find a way to make his happen. Heck of a way to close out the home portion of the 19-20 season!
#StartAheadStayAhead
I know Coach Izzo always coaches his team hard (he always has). But in watching him this year, I honestly think he’s coaching them so hard this year cause deep down inside he truly believes they could win the whole thing, and he’s not gonna let them fall short of their potential.
Seems the concept of a simple backcut to bring the defender off the perimeter and open up space for fillers/ball reversal is lost. Kids, sometimes just back cutting to the basket is the best way to receive a screen on the other side that can open yourself for a shot.
Incredibly honored and excited to spend a week in Memphis working with some of the top players and coaches in the country. Did it in 2019 and had a blast. Looking forward to it again!

1st weekend in 5+ months w/o a practice or game. Always a punch in the gut when the season ends. That said, 28+ years of coaching has given me so many relationships w/coaches & players who are still playing. This weekend will be spent recruiting & cheering on those dear friends.
@TweetsbyCoachP
Important to note as well: exposure is relative. Timing is critical, and timing of playing well is also critical. Coaches don’t need to see your kid “dominate.” Just play well, be coachable, a good teammate, and win. Body language/attitude counts just as much.
1) Last Saturday was the 6th Northland College graduation for myself &

founder Ritchie Davis, a grassroots legend who was taken away from us way too soon. Our hearts are broken tonight.

When I coached pro ball in Europe for
@LandstedeBasket
, Coach Herman would say that FG% was the top stat when deciding to sign someone. "It means they either take good shots or make tough ones." I wish kids who wish to be recruited understood that. Far more valuable than PPG.
CBS commentator states it well. “Once you’ve established position, you’re allowed to move to maintain it.” Wish more fans/parents/coaches/officials understood. 2 feet on the floor, facing ball handler = legal guarding position. Defender can move to maintain & still take a charge.
So happy and proud of
