But intentions are meaningless. The impact is what matters. Lots of well intentioned people say and do ableist things. They need to be held accountable even if they’re nice people. It’s how we learn to hurt each other less. It’s not a bad thing.

I had to really work to unlearn the idea that a relationship must have permanency to be real or valuable. The truth is I’m constantly changing, and everyone else is too, so why wouldn’t our relationships change too? Some last, some don’t. But it doesn’t mean they weren’t real.

Maybe you would feel better if you were using your time to better society. There are lots of ways to volunteer from home. Use the Be My Eyes app to help out blind folks. Make “phone pal” calls to the elderly. Participate in online scientific research at Zooniverse. Etc.

My first feeling seeing that grid was joy. I love being stumped and slowly working things out. That’s why I do puzzles! Not everyone has that response, which is fine. So why do puzzles?? I don’t golf and then complain about how boring it is because I already know I won’t like it.

I think you have to let go of the fact that her preferences might be racist and her allergies might be copycatting. What you can focus on is how YOU are actually impacted. It’s ok to say in a loving way, “I can’t always travel to you” or “I don’t want to eat there today”
