The
#UWScienceSummerProgram
aims to bring science to the community, to make it accessible for young women; for Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other underrepresented ethnic groups; for first-generation students; and for those coming from low-income backgrounds

Sometimes in life, reality can exceed our dreams. I am extremely humbled to have been chosen as an
#FHScholar
and to be a part of this exceptional group of scientists. It is an immense honor to contribute my perspective on science and mentorship to this meaningful HHMI program.
HHMI is proud to announce our inaugural class of Freeman Hrabowski Scholars, outstanding early career faculty in science who have potential to become leaders in their research fields and to create diverse and inclusive lab environments. 1/3

My parents were two hard workers their entire lives. They didn’t have the opportunity to go to school but they worked so hard to make sure I did. Seeing their last name on that door means the world to us
So happy to start the day with good news.
@AstraZeneca
will support our 2023 Science Summer Program for high school students from low-income backgrounds and underrepresented groups.
🚨🚨🚨 So happy and proud to announce that the first paper from the Moreno Lab has been officially published!! Kudos to Sabrina Choi, Matthias Baudot, and
@Vivas_ol
for this great teamwork. For a summary of our work read the thread.
Couples in science struggle to find TT positions for both.
@Vivas_ol
delayed his track so I could accept my position. But the dream was a shared one. I’m so happy and proud to see that all your talent and effort has paid off. Congratulations my partner in science
Two job applications, two offers. Happy to join both departments. I am delighted to announce that I will start my lab as an Assistant Professor in

Our fantastic TAs came up with this fantastic idea of using food coloring to do a mock PCR master mix. A clear example of why good pipetting skills in the lab are important

Did you know that all mammals experience a slowdown of their heart rate as they age? Although the mechanisms are still not well understood alterations in the neural control of the pacemaker are partially responsible. Check out our last review to learn more

Bertil Hille - The man who wrote the book that became the world Biophysics’s bible. A man who has taught me so much and who I’m honored to call my mentor and my colleague now!
Waiting to start my class, a young female student approached me. “I wanted to tell you I love your lectures, it is so inspiring to see a strong young woman scientist like you teaching, I admire you, and you are a true inspiration” … and just like that all my hard work paid off
1/2 When the Nobel prize in Physiology/Medicine is a scientist that you admire profoundly, a great human being, someone that has sat with you in your office to listen and encourage your ideas, who has read your proposals and offered feedback, the news bring a special happiness

One of my favorite slides from my Calcium signaling lecture. Thanks
@felicitydavis2
for your contribution and your extraordinary work on the calcium signaling in the mammary gland
So proud of this young woman and her work showing how aging alters the adrenergic modulation of L-type calcium channels in the cardiac pacemaker! You rock Sabrina Choi! Don’t miss her poster - B284

Forgot to mention at the end of my talk that I’m looking for grad students/postdocs/res scientists curious about how the pacemaker rate adapts. If you are interested let me know!!!
That face of fulfillment when you get to spend the day showing young students from underrepresented groups the science we do

. I’m thankful to all the labs that opened today their doors to us to make this possible. A short clip on the making! 🎬

with 21 incredible presentations. These young students shared with us the science they did. Their passion and dedication were the motors of this program. I’m so grateful for the time we spent together. Keep dreaming. Dream big!
Waiting for that time when I have the right answer at the right moment
A man in the corridor told me I look like a janitor because I had too many keys, then he added “but you dress and look too nice”
You know who else have many keys? Professors with multiple lab spaces like 👏🏽me
Perhaps I am an atypical scientist, or an atypical mom, or an atypical 40 year old woman, or perhaps all of them…but this is one of the milestones that I hit with no effort
