Ignore this at your own risk.
Do not put your family in a small car.
Yesterday, my wife was driving my son to school and an oncoming delivery truck crossed the center lane and hit her head on — the driver had a seizure was going 40 mph.
I was on my way to work in a separate
Despite the national environment shifting right by nearly 12 points (D+8.7 to R+3), Kemp only did 6 points better than 2018, indicating a continued leftward trend for the state.
Within the state, most Dem trends are in the Atlanta suburbs, withstanding the red wave
With Legislature passing Evers maps (which he is likely to sign), here are my initial ratings for the maps.
The Assembly is a Tossup while the Senate is Safe R (mostly because 2 R held districts that would likely flip aren't up this year)
My D+47 central Milwaukee ward is averaging 45 voters per hour, combined with ~200 absentee votes, projects to ~800 votes out of ~900 registered voters, or 89%.
For reference, in 2020, the ward had 86% turnout among RVs
If Milwaukee's suburbs think they should have a major say in what happens downtown, I think it's only fair that downtown residents (like myself) should have a major say in those suburbs.
Pretty crazy that we’ve seen actual evidence in the last 24 hrs for why it’s essential Biden wins and we’re going to ignore it because Biden had a cold and apparently that’s disqualifying
@UsurpedCacti
Half the point of the movie was that Barbieland was the opposite of the real world, where Barbies ran everything and Kens were just there for emotional support.
It's time for ward level maps of Wisconsin elections! Here's the gubernatorial race where incumbent Dem Tony Evers won by 3.4 points. Note the continued leftward trend of the Milwaukee and Fox Valley suburbs as well as the lingering support in the drift less area

The thing I love about Charlie Berens is how he makes these liberal coded ideas palatable for conservative audiences.
Don’t limit salting b/c of climate change, limit it to protect the walleyes!

@Dak0ta175
The same Democrat lost by 22 in 2022.
This is absolutely incredible for a district that was a Republican bastion before 2016
Currently, getting from eastern Oak Creek to AmFam field is only 1 min longer taking 94 rather than 794. Tearing down 794 would literally only add a minute to the commute
WisDOT: it’s too expensive to expand passenger rail in Wisconsin
Also WisDOT: we’re going to spend $17 million on a beautiful world class station for the few people who happen to get off at the airport
Here I am, at the Colectivo in the Third Ward, at 6:45 AM on a cold Sunday morning.
Why would I be here at such an early hour? To ride
@thehopmke
through the Couture for the first time, of course!
Excited to welcome President
@JoeBiden
back to Wisconsin! 🧀🐄 With a record 14.6 million new small business applications, President Biden is building an economy from the middle out and the bottom up.
One thing to keep in mind regarding the results:
In 2018, Dallet won by 10 and then Evers went on to win by 1
In 2020, Karofsky won by 10 and then Biden went on to win by 1
Janet's 10 point win is significant due to the majority, but don't read too much into it for other races
@hsrgood
Beyond the bad math, imagine telling San Diego residents that they’re going to have 66 thousand more cars on their roads, including people who are physically incapable of driving
Republicans who push the narrative that Democrats are *only* clustered in Milwaukee and Madison sure like to ignore the fact that cities like Eau Claire, La Crosse, Racine, Kenosha, Beloit, Janesville, Oshkosh, Appleton, and Green Bay have elected Democratic representatives.
Decided to look at what parts of LA's Light Rail lines are actually grade separated. LA's LRTs are significantly more isolated than typical American LR lines, with 61% of the length being Underground, Elevated, or generally Grade Separated.
The new Vel Phillips Plaza seems unofficially open to pedestrians. There’s still a little bit of work left on the southwest corner (where it’s fenced off), but otherwise it looks amazing!
Absolutely shameful that anyone at WisDOT, much less the regional communications manager would make such abhorrent remarks about traffic calming.
He has absolutely no idea how reckless driving or street design works
With
#ProjectDriveSafer
, we're mainly focused on people on 4-wheels. But how do their decisions impact those on 2?
I hit the road with some cyclists who deal with some of the more dangerous intersections in the city and, spoiler alert, it's sketchy.
With Darrin Madison's and Ryan Clancy's wins yesterday, this will be the rebirth of the socialist caucus in the Wisconsin assembly, representing Glendale, Shorewood, part of the North Side, the East Side, and north Bay View.
@Longridesagain
@whstancil
A terrible x-axis.
The markers are evenly spaced, but do not show consistent time between them:
5 years -> 2 years -> 3 years
FINAL UNOFFICIAL RESULTS:
Tatterson (D) 5568
Melotik (R) 6455
Tatterson loses by 7.4%, a massive improvement from his 22 point loss in 2022 and even better than Evers' incredibly impressive 13 point loss.
The dam is breaking. Milwaukee's suburbs are going blue
Although Illinois lost population last decade, that didn't come from Chicago, but the rural counties elsewhere.
Cook County also grew faster than 4/8 Chicagoland counties.
The police are the only government agency where conservatives see incompetence as a sign of being underfunded (despite police almost always having the largest budget)
During my recent visit to Milwaukee, the number one issue I heard from folks that they're concerned about is the rise of crime in our major cities.
The left's dystopian vision of de-funding the police is not how we make our cities safer.
You have my word, I'll ALWAYS have the
The thing I hate most about fare free transit advocates is 99% of transit fares are super cheap. Fares are just not a real obstacle for people to take transit.
@the_transit_guy
White privilege and car culture is a guy driving down a parade route and the cops not immediately shooting his tires to make him stop.
The upcoming
@MULawPoll
for Wisconsin is exciting for a number of reasons, but one I’d like to focus on is the concern for herding in the Senate race.
A 🧵:
Ok Wisconsin. What’s up with the lack of emissions testing places?
There’s like 5 or 6 places on the East side that used to do it but no longer.
It makes it really difficult to comply with state law when there’s so few options
Passenger rail connects our communities, promotes tourism and decreases traffic congestion (which makes everything safer when roads are slick in the winter).
The Twin Cities and Duluth are one step closer to being connected by affordable, accessible passenger rail.
It's interesting to me how much more car dependent Madison is compared to Milwaukee.
Milwaukee has only 30% more highway miles than Madison, despite having twice the population and nearly 3x the suburban population (whom the highways serve most)
Was thinking about what would be the best initial route for a rail rapid transit system in Milwaukee and I think this is it. Would provide important but distinct rapid service across the city, serve downtown, and still be cost effective while not cutting corners.
I think the fact that no one has announced a candidacy against Tammy Baldwin (and every one who was seen as a potential candidate has declined) kinda tells you the state of the Wisconsin GOP right now
Wisconsin has one of the most important elections ever coming up in the next year, and no it’s not the gubernatorial race
We have a Supreme Court election in April 2023 that will decide the majority on the court
We can undo the effects of overturning Roe through our own courts
@MariNotSorry28
@jejesjesijessi
It’s interesting since $10 on $37 is 27%, which is arguably a very high tip.
But certainly there’s the argument of fame and being overly generous
There is so much unrealized cycling demand in downtown Milwaukee. If we just made fairly minor investments into seriously protecting cyclists, you'd see an explosion in ridership.
Was looking for some info about the Park East freeway and came across this plan for the freeways around downtown. Crazy to think how much worse it could have been, as we can still see in many other cities
The fact that
@WisDOTsoutheast
has no Milwaukee office, has only one for the whole 2 million person region, and the one is in Waukesha, is basically everything you need to know about how they operate and design roads for the region.
Here's a more detailed map of my extended proposal for the Hop. This includes the current expansion plans as well as ideas for the future.
This would allow both for nearby neighborhoods to get downtown easily as well as convenient transport around downtown
Big news in Ozaukee, Janet actually came 1st in the county, with ~900 votes more than Dorow.
Overall, liberals lost Ozaukee by 12.5%. Evers lost by 11 and Barnes lost by 16 for comparison
Well this is pretty sweet. Here's a section of the final design for Walnut St b/w the freeway and 20th, with construction slated to start next year. This will be 9 city blocks of continuous protected bike lane
I know it's a low bar, but it's cool to see the Chair of our Public Works Committee not only advocate for transit and walkable options to Summerfest, but also note the fundamental geometric issue with cars.
2/3 of Tony Evers' votes came from outside Dane or MKE counties. Those 876,000 votes translated into 14 of the 99 seats in the Assembly due to the GOP gerrymander.
Theory: the reason why so many people think the Hoan is included in 794 removal is because most people who take 794 only take it to the Lakefront.
To them, 794 is just the portion that crosses the Hoan and ends at Discovery World, so removing 794 sounds like removing that part
Generally, it's a smart approach to assume that anything Vos proposes has an escape hatch to benefit him. It's important to look for loopholes or other ambiguous language to see how the proposal can be exploited.
This redistricting bill is a perfect example
One thing that I think is under appreciated about the North/South BRT proposal is that not only will much more of it use dedicate transit lanes, but most of those lines will likely use dividers to prevent cars from even having temporary access to the lanes.
It’s sad how many people disparage the north side of Milwaukee. I’m taking the Red line down Capitol and there are some absolutely gorgeous homes in great condition through here
> Guy who wonders why people like Midwestern cities
*Minneapolis over 10 years 👇*
"I guess we'll never know, Midwest cities suck and are depopulating."
@_fat_ugly_rat_
In the Midwest, visiting every county is both significantly easier and likely carries more weight when Dems still get 30-40%.
So many Texas counties have Dems at 15% or less, so there’s less of a penalty to not visit them, even if only for narrative reasons
Next up is the Senate race, which incumbent Rep Ron Johnson by 1 point. Even though Johnson won, Barnes was still able to do well in the traditionally red suburbs. Note how Johnson has lost his Fox Valley home region advantage.
2/3
The one bit of Amtrak criticism I strongly agree with is a lack of transparency for customers about delays, etc.
Lots of things are outside their control, but communication is not one of them
Here's the comparison b/w Evers and Barnes, where Evers ran ahead everywhere except for majority Black parts of Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha. Evers was especially dominant in the more recently Democratic west.
3/3
It’s crazy that people think Milwaukee doesn’t have good food when I think it’s one of our strengths. What we don’t have in unique style, we more than make up for in diversity and quality
There was a "chef" visiting Milwaukee recently. He asked for food recommendations. The comments from Milwaukeeans ruined my day. Loud and wrong. Lots of "we don't have good food here - go to Chicago instead." Just say you don't have the opportunity to get out much.
It’s abundantly clear that Trump winning this fall would be far more dangerous than his win in 2016.
Anyone who is not voting for the Democratic ticket this fall is aligning themselves with fascism, plain and simple
It would be really cool if we could have a massive housing development project on these lots, which are all vacant or abandoned. There's just over 8 acres of land here, so you could easily get 1500 new units of housing
Rewatching that TMJ4 clip of the WisDOT Comms Director and I’m struck by the patronizing, know-it-all attitude he has.
Which is unfortunate because his words show the opposite: that he in fact knows very little.
FYI for the election tomorrow, I will be tracking turnout at my Milwaukee ward every hour in this Google sheet. I've included recent election results, turnout, and how my ward compares to Milwaukee County as a whole:
Probably one of the coolest photos I’ve taken. It’s so rare for an astronomical phenomenon to be this visible this close to a major city.
Usually you need better cameras or composite images
Milwaukee!!
Seriously, we're building ~10-15 miles of protected bike infrastructure per year.
Milwaukee in 2030 will feel radically different for cycling than today
What US city is actually becoming more bikeable at a rate commensurate with the need?
Is there an American Paris?
Or have the great ambitions that many city leaders had in the early 2010s completely petered out (absent a small bump in COVID)?
While I haven’t ridden the Hiawatha in a while, but it seems the new Ventures have been added recently (hopefully permanently).
Definitely makes this early morning train a nicer experience
@the_transit_guy
Separate, but we should boost collaboration b/w National Parks and Amtrak.
Empire Builder serves Glacier, but unless you’re planning a backpacking trip, the park is basically inaccessible
