As a Canadian I'm getting tired of Donald Trump insinuating that Canada would be better off as the 51st state. Americans cherish their right to bear arms almost as much as we enjoy the rights and freedoms of being Canadian. So my message to President Trump is, to paraphrase Charlton Heston, "you can have my Canadian flag and my Canadian citizenship when you pry it from cold, dead hands" Time to stop the insulting talk and start real discussions about the things we need to fix. Trade wars are not the answer. A trade war will hurt our entrepreneurs, SMEs and local economies the most because small biz is big in Canada. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the engine of the economy, accounting for 99.8% of businesses in this country. Their success is vital to Canada’s prosperity. The vast majority of our Country’s exporters (72.9%) were SMEs, producing 40.8% of the total value of Canadian exports. 30% of US lumber and 52% of the oil they import comes from Canada. In Durham Region, we import auto parts, export cars and electricity to the US. In addition to our ads dropping during inauguration, we (@RoweSantos and I) brought our local awareness campaign to small businesses. BREAKING NEWS - Yesterday I had the privilege of honouring a local Whitby business for their selfless efforts to locate a customer who accidently overtipped by $450. The woman wanted to leave a generous tip of $7.00 for her $65 bill. She accidentally typed in 700%. The frantic search lead to a social media frenzy, the customer was located, and her funds returned to her. The tremendous effort by local residents made this a community achievement. Thank you to Michelle Milton owner of @michelleslounge on a job well done. Please send messages of thanks to Michelle and her staff. As a municipal councillor, I decided I was not going to stand by while President-elect Donald Trump threatened jobs in our city and in cities across Canada. People working in the auto industry and other businesses that rely on trade have asked me, "What are you going to do to help protect our jobs?" In response, I have co-founded a group called We are giving a platform for municipal leaders in Canada to talk to municipal leaders in the US to explain the mutual damage that will be done if we have a trade war.
