In no other facet of American life would we shame a person for leaving a system that exploits him so he could better prepare for a job that will pay him millions.
First day with
@BaltimoreBanner
.
Here’s what I’m wondering, local fans: What do you want from your sports coverage? What’s lacking? What could you do without?
Some professional news ...
I'm so excited to be joining
@BaltimoreBanner
next week, to work with Kimi and reunite with
@moniquenjones
and
@ankwalker
. I'm in awe of the staff there and can't wait to get started.
We're going to build something special.
I'm also excited to announce that The Banner's sports coverage will be led by
@ChrisKorman
, a veteran sports writer and editor — currently of
@ForTheWin
. He'll hit the ground running by hiring a team of reporters, a columnist and an assistant sports editor!
Major news organizations that should know better are acting like the NCAA took a major step today.
It did not. It did what the NCAA always does, which is obfuscate and delay.
Here’s
@aNateScott
We're still early in the process of building
@BaltimoreBanner
's sports coverage, but our Ravens' stories this week were easily worth the $1 it costs for a six-month subscription.
A brief thread.
🚨Friday afternoon ... JOBS.🚨
@BaltimoreBanner
is building its sports department, and we have 10 openings.
First, we need a Deputy Sports Editor to help us craft strategy, guide writers and reach readers.
Sports fans of Baltimore, a quick question:
Why are you not going to Orioles games?
10k a night during the rebuild was one thing but ... that's over now, and these are the numbers for the A's series:
Four years ago, I left Baltimore for Alabama with the goal of one day covering the Baltimore Ravens alongside
@jonas_shaffer
. Today, my first day with the
@BaltimoreBanner
, that dream comes true.
Pitchers and catchers report today.
That means, for the Orioles, it's the official start of Adley Rutschman's second year.
He's already being projected by some as the best catcher in baseball.
We wanted to understand how he got there.
Back in 2008 I had hopes that Dan Dakich would use his insights from a life in college basketball to be honest about the young men who play it.
Sadly he opted to become another condescending radio bloviator with nothing new to say.
We are thrilled that Andy will be joining our team.
He's a dynamic reporter and gifted storyteller.
I can't wait to work with him. He'll be providing coverage of MLB's winter meetings next week.
Life update: Today is my last day at The Baltimore Sun. I truly loved my time there.
I’ll still be covering the Orioles, so I’m not going far. I’ll just be doing so for the
@BaltimoreBanner
. I’m excited to build something new here in Baltimore, and I hope you’ll keep reading.
I was reading The New York Times in February and said out loud, “I want to hire whoever wrote this story.”
Thrilled that we did, and to add Kris to our already formidable Ravens coverage team with
@jonas_shaffer
@kylegoon
@AronYohannes
and
@PaulMancano
.
Today is my first day at the
@BaltimoreBanner
, where I’ll cover the Ravens with
@jonas_shaffer
.
Thanks to everyone at
@nytsports
for the last year, which was the most rewarding of my career.
Excited to get to work 🕺🏾🕺🏾
We could have and should have had college sports! And people like Ben Sasse and Jim Jordan could have and should have pushed to take the steps to make that happen. They pandered to their president and base instead, and here we are.
Just a thought here, but what if we took all the energy behind "we want college sports back" & redirected it to "we want a national pandemic response plan" and still arrive at the desired outcome in the end?
It’s my last day with
@ForTheWin
, and I’m struggling to find the words to explain how much this site means to me.
I’m tempted to simply list all of the people who made it what it is, but that list is long. I feel so proud to have worked with these brilliant, daring writers.
Director of Sport Performance: Chris Doyle
▪️ Served as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the University of Iowa from 1999-2019
▪️ Participated in 16 bowl games
▪️ Saw 55 Iowa players selected in the NFL Draft from 2005-2019
Only a few ours remain in the
@BaltimoreBanner
’s open house. You can read everything we’ve done since launching a year ago for free.
I’ve been slow to tweet because I’m at the beach and the beers are cold. But I’m so proud to be a part of this amazing publication.
The 1971 Orioles present two things you'll never see in major league baseball again: 1) a team with four 20-game winners; 2) a team with the stones to wear solid orange uniforms.
The same people who are like “the players are striking but they haven’t presented a plan!” are probably loving the current political convention, which despite unlimited resources is built entirely around the lack of a plan for anything at all
Losing
@danconnolly2016
from the O's beat is devastating. I started reading him when I was in college, became an admirer and, after we worked together at the Sun, a friend. This is a crummy time for someone with his knowledge and passion to be without a writing home.
It’s been days since
@TheAthletic
has produced an Orioles article, the main reason for my subscription. Their new lack of local sports writing and writers policy really gives me no reason to renew. That’s a shame.
Lots of chatter tonight about the media "taking down" Roy Moore.
That isn't the intention among straight-news journalists. It's verifying and reporting what people don't know already -- and letting them decide for themselves.
#DougJones
#RoyMoore
#AlabamaSenateElection
Have wanted to hire Charles ever since I saw his photo from high school. Look how skeptical he is!
But seriously: He's going to be an important voice for our site and I can't wait to work with him.
howdy: i’m joining
@ForTheWin
!
got a chance to work with
@aNateScott
again from the old sb nation days and pounced at the opportunity.
also i’ll be working with some bum named
@theStevenRuiz
to cover the NFL - i think we can make that work.
anddd dabblings in
#other
sports
@FourVerts
Fired up for tonight’s game sponsored by Lockheed Martin; all my subsequent defense spending will go to them based on their great support of college football
On the day my son was born 9 years ago, one of the people who called me was Mike Gottlieb, the Towson baseball coach working to prevent the school from cutting his team. I was reporting that story. The team was saved and here’s Charlie at Towson baseball camp today …
John Angelos calling himself "transparent" is baffling. The entire family has evaded the media for the better part of two decades.
He made an offer today to open the books and show reporters "everything" we want to know.
The Baltimore Banner will be there. He can name a time.
Competing against (and mostly losing) to Hutch my first few years on a beat made me a better journalist. My thoughts are with his wife and children — he was such a dedicated family man — and my friends on the close-knit IU beat. A huge loss.
We're going to miss Kris a lot. He's every bit the sort of talent who would be wooed away by the biggest name in sports media after a few weeks.
But he's an even better person, and his t-shirt collection is probably the best I've ever seen.
Really excited about this new opportunity covering the Chargers at ESPN.
Thanks to
@ChrisKorman
,
@moniquenjones
, and
@jonas_shaffer
for a great time in Baltimore, where they helped me become a better writer and reporter.
Some news: The
@BaltimoreBanner
has partnered with
@TheRacingBiz
to bring you Preakness and other horse racing news.
I've known and respected Frank a long time; I used his site to follow racing after leaving the beat.
Thrilled this came together.
Currently at a pizza joint not far from where Chad Henne grew up.
The atmosphere is electric.
(Just kidding it’s mostly kids who have no idea who he is.)
i don't know, seems like maybe black men getting killed by cops disrespects the flag and the country
the fact that the black kids in my son's 1st grade class have to learn to live by an entirely different definition of "freedom" disrespects the flag and the country
Highlight:
@readdanwrite
asks
@drewbrees
what the star NFL quarterback thinks about "players kneeling again when the NFL season starts."
@drewbrees
: “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”
Full exchange:
You mean to tell me the born-wealthy chud is just making up the definition of free speech as he goes, and that it's almost entirely dependent on his own self-interest?
NEVER saw it coming.
Anyway,
Hope you’ll read this story about Casey FitzSimmons, whose unlikely 7-year NFL career left him with a TBI that he thought he’d never survive. He can’t recall the two *years* after his last hit.
One of the most important I’ve ever had the chance to tell.
We ended up doing a Friday-evening news drop with this, but I wanted to make sure Steven got more attention this week before he delivers his personal news and sends congrats Twitter aflutter.
So, a few quick thoughts ...
New episode of The Counter … and sadly also my last.
Today is my last day at FTW. I’ve worked with a lot of great people over the last 5 years (!) and the staff is what made this decision so difficult. I’m gonna miss working with all of them.
We know you're hurting, Ravens fans.
For that season to end so abruptly, with so much left o the table ...
Can't think of two better people to talk it over with than
@jonas_shaffer
and
@PaulMancano
.
Join them at 7:30.
Everything surrounding Urban Meyer has been a farce, and a particularly dark one even by the standards of college sports.
But it’s also what we should expect from a broken system.
It's a great time to be a Baltimore sports fan. The teams are good & interesting, AND there's this ambitious new startup,
@AllBannerSports
, pushing the coverage every. single. day.
The next few weeks and months are going to be wild.
Ride along with us.
Team is, if not *actually* good (yet), at least very exciting/interesting. Games are shorter. Camden Yards remains Camden Yards.
So what is it? Cost? The inconvenience of getting to games? Lack of time? You'd like to be paid, rather than pay, to watch the A's?
People like
@ChrisKorman
are the problem. They think that companies like Nike should be permitted to bribe players and determine which colleges have good teams & which don’t. They think it’s okay for Nike to decide which schools are disadvantaged in the interest of corp profits.
@aNateScott
The NCAA is trying to stem the creation of new legislation, and slow the progress of existing bills in other states. Full stop.
Schools need time to lobby, and the NCAA has to figure out a way to create the illusion of progress without giving up too much.
Stick with me here as I try to work through every story
@BaltimoreBanner
delivered starting Sunday morning through today covering the Orioles, Ravens and Terps.
It all began with a Terps football story from
@ByVarunShankar
.
There’s a lot I could say to defend Baltimore and the people who try to fix the parts of it that are broken.
But that would mean giving credence to criticisms stirred by a racist that are un-rooted in fact and I’d rather not waste time doing that.
Honestly too tired to pitch this really great episode with anything more than this: at the end
@FourVerts
simply reads the name of random bowl games and I laugh maniacally like a broken father of 3 who will be wrapping presents for the next 84 hours.
Thankful to get Terps coverage today from
@primetimeMitch
.
I'm shocked at how good this Maryland team is. They are SO IMPRESSIVE in the second half of games. Brenda Frese, man.
Wrote this yesterday morning but today just proves the point: Urban Meyer honestly believes he can just say whatever words he wants and they will become true.
You've waited a long time for playoff baseball to return to Baltimore. One day left.
Here's a sampling of the many stories
@AllBannerSports
has done this week to get you ready.
I'll tell you about each one, since this site no longer gives you headlines.
Start here:
Also announced that
@FourVerts
will be joining the show at some point next month. The ensuing conversation just sounds like both of us being too excited to even say anything of substance. And that's accurate.
Week 11 recap episode of the Counter is up!
We're talking Chiefs-Raiders, Colts-Packers, how Deshaun Watson is coming for the QB2 title, Taysom Hill and more!
Subscribe here:
On the day of my son’s second active shooter training, I went to pick him up. He was rattled by the first. As we walked by the baseball field he said, “when we run out of the school to here we’re supposed to run in a zig-zag for some reason.” He’s 5.
I'll have more to say early next week (and some sappy thoughts on my FTW family at some point), but if you're interested in joining The Banner's sports staff, please reach out.
You know where you can probably get some “organic” beer? A brewery near your house. They’ll even show you how they make the beer. And they will not own any corn syrup.
@AssemblyCall
This is interesting sentiment from a guy who played for a coach who became best pals with a local writer who bought sugar by the truck load.
But also it feels like there might be room in the world for more than one approach to talking about sports.
Welp, this is a bit awkward but ...
The
@BaltimoreBanner
has a new sports columnist, and his debut column is not the lovely intro he wrote for tomorrow but instead this analysis of Lamar Jackson's contract.
A bit of an unplanned debut, but news doesn't stop for personal updates. So here's the update: I'm now the sports columnist at
@BaltimoreBanner
, and my first column is about the Ravens, Lamar Jackson, and a reconciliation that had to happen:
Nike and Adidas have been influencing college basketball for decades. The issue isn’t that they might be “bribing” players, it’s that they have to work around ridiculous rules to pay kids who should be getting paid.
Here's the last episode of The Counter with
@FourVerts
. We got
@theStevenRuiz
to join in, too.
Been an honor to talk football with both of them, and I'll listen to/read/watch them wherever they go.
Apparently people are saying Patrick Mahomes was in any way to blame for the Chiefs losing Super Bowl 55.
@theStevenRuiz
disproves that here with a review of every drop back that resulted in an incompletion, sack or INT.
Everyone is focusing on the geographical error here but can you imagine the mess it would make if you actually did this. There would Old Bay all over the place. The Old Bay won this fight! You'll be cleaning that stuff out for like two months, Bills.
I wedged my Canucks take into this Oilers take a few days ago, because that’s what I do, I stack takes, but it’s worth pointing out again how absurd it is to rush Vancouver back and play every single game. Just so callous and yet pointless.
NFL coaches are rich and famous because of black players whose athletic talent allowed them to fight through the snarl of systemic racism. They, as much as anyone, should understand why it’s long past time to speak out.
If you’re a football fan who worried about the players and other people involved in college football, maybe just watch today with nervous interest and reflect on being a decent human who can see nuance through a pandemic.
Lol,
@afkostka
caught up with the guy who grabbed Shohei Ohtani's 456-foot home run ball and then ... because he heard people yelling for him to do so ... threw it back.
Instant regret.
Last story for
@BaltimoreBanner
this summer. A look into the Baltimore Royals, the city's new Minor League Cricket team, and their state-of-the-art facility:
@insidethehall
@Sam_Vecenie
Indiana is a great job and 75 percent of coaches should be clamoring for it and Dolson should not want to hire anybody who is afraid of the “fish bowl.” What makes it great is that the fans really care. Being afraid that they have “unrealistic expectations” is so weak.
HARSH WRITING ADVICE
if somebody really feels the need to be harsh when discussing something as difficult as writing, leave them behind. The world is shit enough without some asshole complaining about how you arrange your words
Meet Thatch, the real star of Orioles camp. The pup, who belongs to head groundskeeper
@Andrew_Wolcott
, has found a home at Ed Smith Stadium — and brings smiles each day.

Story:
I feel incredibly lucky that I can’t really think of
@theStevenRuiz
as up-and-coming. I got to be his editor when he was an intern and knew then everybody else would feel this way about him, eventually.
I’m excited to see where a new group takes For The Win, and I’ll miss being a part of that work. I’m heartbroken that they’ll be impacted by Gannett’s struggles but I know they’ll find a way to keep going.
Thank you to everyone who was a part of my story there.
