Hi I’m Chelsea. I’m a graduate student in SF. I’m from the Commonwealth of Dominica 🇩🇲, Waitukubuli as my Kalinago ancestors first called her.
I’m an artist, herper and birder. One of the cofounders of Black Birders Week. And a host on the PokeScience podcast.
Hot Girl Summer is a phrase created by Black rapper Megan thee Stallion and basically means you having fun, being confident and unapologetically yourself.
This phrase has since taken off with Megan getting very little credit for it as is normal for Black creatives.

“We miss you, Flaco!”
(Flaco died painfully from slowly deteriorating organs from pigeon herpes and rat poison as a result of living in Central Park after his enclosure was vandalised and Mr MBA helped thwart multiple recaptures)
If you are at the UCLA encampments and have evidence like photos and videos of these mice and/or are able to safely catch one without touching it. Report this to IACUC. The police or campus security might not take it seriously. But IACUC will cook these losers for violations.
IACUC are very serious about enforcement but also if you want to keep being a scientist with access to your labs this is stupid to do but also also this is an attempt at biological warfare/terrorism because who knows what experiments the mice were used for
OK don't laugh.
I spent 3 days watching every frame of the animated classic FernGully: The Last Rainforest. I cross referenced lists, maps and my own approximate area of where the movie took place around Wollumbin (formerly Mt Warning), Australia to figure out a species list.
In case you don’t know!
Brood parasite is the term for animals (or Pokemon) that have others raise their kids. The parasite does its best to have its eggs look like host’s, sometimes even removing one of the hosts eggs before placing its own (because some birds can count).
I’m gonna start my

OK so guess who accepted a PhD offer?????
I've kind of been having an out of body experience. Me. A girl from a small island in the Caribbean. Just been drawing and loud about my silly little lizards. I can't believe it. I may have cried a little (a lot).
Now it's been used as meme in all aspects from Old Navy ads to even academia. Memes are not inherently bad but when they are about or based off things created by Black people and tied to Black culture we need to take a step back and think about the impact.

Why do they do it? So they can fuck off in layman’s terms.
They don’t have to “pay the cost” of raising young. They can forage and try to make more kids without worrying about raising the current ones.
It's
#PostABird
time! My first bird folklore story today is about one with a call that haunts me🙄.
The Ringed Kingfisher nests along the rivers & swamps. There is the belief that the rattle call of this bird in a neighbourhood means that a woman that lives there is pregnant.
HGS was created by a Black woman for Black culture. The remix or disparaging of it by non-Black people continues a long history of stealing from Black content creators, digital blackface and caricature or demonising Black culture.

As academics we log into Twitter all day, week, month and year, and talk about inclusivity, challenging whiteness and dismantling white supremacy. Those include the way that Black culture is appropriated and the memefication of Black people.

I keep tweeting about this because public pressure, the same public pressure that was a part of hindering Flaco’s recapture, could have gotten him into a sanctuary or a larger enclosure. But instead people chose to insulate and foster mistrust in the work being done to keep this
Since it's conception I've seen several non-Black people remix the phrase especially for profit or marketing, and in STEM/academia, to either disparage a misunderstanding of the original meaning or market a STEM event that is almost always never Black led or attended.
4/8
Also a Black woman in STEM it is incredibly concerning to me that pointing these things out to people who purport themselves to be allies results in backlash and a deeper rallying around each other for more of the harm and culture vulture behaviour I'm speaking up about.
7/8
This includes events like Hot Nozzle Summer (HNS) or Hot Cicada Summer (HCS) or saying that there is no HGS ("cancelled" lmao), & we are instead having STEM Girl Summer (I've seen so many versions of this one).
All these "creators" conveniently ignoring an important factor.

Owl safe.
He is an invasive species. He was born and raised in captivity. And released into an environment that was not only so far from what his natural habitat should be, but dangerous for him. He should never have been left in Central Park.
Moreover, the constant reporting of
Flaco's final necropsy results reveal "two significant underlying conditions .... a severe pigeon herpesvirus from eating feral pigeons ... and exposure to four different anticoagulant rodenticides ...."

Wolves wiped out the native caribou population in Idaho. They are gone. The last lone caribou was air lifted out of the state.
Not only are we NOT the only one doing it, this specific species hunts others to extinction currently in other states.
This is why good scicomm is important. Because this headline has everyone angry and up in arms about trees being replaced with these but the intention is to help in heavily polluted areas that may be difficult to plant trees in, with algae that is way more efficient.
The locations of owls and certain other birds is unethical. They are sensitive species & need to be left with as much space as possible. This didn’t seem to bother Flaco much, which may have something to do with the whole being raised in captivity thing.
His death was unnecessary
As a cat person, cat people are wild.
What is difficult about keeping your cat, indoors???? What is so insulting about it besides the fact that you just don’t wanna take proper care of your pet???
Is it imposter syndrome or am I Black and working thrice as hard as my white peers for less recognition and with less help and respect and it’s eating at me?
POV: you hear your cat opening cupboards downstairs and ask him wtf he up to so he come to peek at you to see if you really know he being naughty or just guessed.
And a result of hubris and deliberate ignorance on the part of humans claiming to want the best for him. As well as negligence on the part of the zoo, through lack of education for the public on the importance of Flaco’s rescue and return, & the abandonment of attempts.
Ran into some members of

snacking on 9 fairway and rough this afternoon. For the “iTs NoT JavEliNa ItS wILd bOaR” crew…here’s your proof 🐽🐽
I’d prefer they eat the dry crunchies because they’re not even eating the birds and lizards, just decimating local wildlife because they can. Keep your cats inside. Bring a street cat inside. Have a good day ✌🏾
“No one gets an A in my class. If you’re lucky you’ll get a C” is such a demoralising thing to hear on your first day of a class.
Continuously not getting help from the professor that he gives to certain students. Like standing right there waiting to ask a question...
That moment when you, a queen (Black-browed albatross), come across another queen (also a Black-browed albatross), and discuss how best to maximise your joint slay (a cottonball child).
Wait a minute did you y’all think we were done???
Tomorrow is
#BlackWomenWhoBird
and one of the things we have planned is birdwatching. That’s right BIRDWATCHING.
@BlackAFinSTEM
and
@MontereyAq
are aviary birdwatching!!!

Hey y'all! A friend pointed out how anoles have bright popsicle coloured dewlaps, so I drew them and you know what? I love them so much, I'm making DewPops stickers now! There's two of them up! I worked so hard on them I hope you love them too!
Also also, I’m an actual wildlife biologist and I’m enough of a Pokémon fan to cohost a Pokémon science podcast. I’m making assumptions based on my knowledge of both things 🖤
What's this? White birders answering questions? lol
Listen I'm happy for all birders to answer bird questions but if it is specifically
#AskABLACKBirder
, then maybe wait until its time for us to answer questions? Our voices are supposed to be heard here. That's the whole thing /:
Hey guys! Now that
#BlackBirdersWeek
is over, it's time for an introduction. I been catching up on sleep but come on. Walk with me.
My name is Chelsea and I'm from the Commonwealth of Dominica in the Caribbean. That's it in the pictures!!! We are between two French islands

Bear with me. It may be long.
As we get our first glimpses of FernGully we see this beautiful family here. I believe they are a family of Southern greater gliders! They’re bigger than sugar gliders but just as cute.

I love alt/goth fashion but I’ve just been afraid because people don’t see as something Black girls do. But it’s 2020 forget that I got some boots on my birthday wishlist and I’m gonna do it.
I am amazed by the response!! I’m in tears over everyone’s pictures & I’ll be doubling back to make sure I liked all.
Closing out my

tweets with these from my walk this morning! Saw one of my favourite black birds (guess which).
(Shirt was a handmade gift 😂)
Hey so I usually write and keep it to myself, but this time I actually decided to share it.
You can read what I wrote on misogynoir, framing Black women as bullies and aggressor and it's history right here:
Less than a year ago Audubon Nature Institute put out a BLM statement saying that they stand with us and for the protection and safety of Black people from police violence, now they are hosting an event called Blue at the Zoo and yes it's exactly what you think.
The privilege to be upset at people critiquing and reminding you not be complacent with Biden and Harris rn...
Both things can be true. You can be happy it’s not Trump but acknowledge theres still a lot of work to do. Getting upset with people for speaking up “too soon” is weird.
Not only is this ridiculous because it's just a unitard and not the epitome of any kind of fashion (sis is just skinny), but she has to be naked to pee, has no pockets, pack or water and is clearly wearing an underboob corset WHILE SHE "HIKES" and I'm ????
White women are addicted to this victim fantasy and it’s so disturbing. Meanwhile Black, indigenous and other women of colour go missing consistently and they are silent until it’s time to make a podcast about it for $$$.
Hello.
I heard it’s
#BiVisibilityDay
and I’ve been afraid to say I’m bi but I’ve gotten very tired of hiding who I am personally. I’m happy with myself.
It’s so wild because furries have the potential to do so much good. And yet every time I or another biologist I know talk about the harm ppl cause to wildlife, it’s always a furry in our replies being condescending because they idk own a fursuit based off the animal or something.
I'm sorry if I'm not moving fast enough. I'm severely triggered and watching my heart break in real time. Some people are not as online as others and genuinely don't know yet too. I just want people to remember when you send DMs and to give grace and TW/CWs.
I do not like Mr Manhattan Bird Alert. Because why are saying lets get more owls??? After one just died so painfully in a place he didn’t recognise and was forced to make a home out of?
Not to mention he was a non-native raptor, who should be living in deep forest, if not in
Snails are really cool because they have a little jaw and a fun thing called a radula that’s kind of like a tongue covered in little teeth. So they bite with their tiny jaw and use the radula to scrape at the food to break it up and eat! So precious!
If you see a shark catching prey, don't save its prey wtf.
If you see any predator trying to catch prey in the wild, don't interfere.
Sorry the prey is cute to you, but predators gotta eat.
Batty Koda (Robin Williams first animated voice role <3) is what I believe to be a Little Red Flying Fox. They also only eat fruit like we see Batty do. With Batty’s origin story as well, a bat whose range spreads across other parts of Australia makes sense.

Please consider deleting this. Our trauma isn’t your tool. You can get racists out of your neighbourhood without traumatising Black people and standing by.
Since starting my PhD, approximately zero of the issues I’ve had to deal with have been about wearing pink, makeup or skirts, and 100% about being a Black woman and outspoken.
🤔 much to consider.
Oh hey!
I’m Chelsea and I love animals and being outside. I study anoles but I’ve been fascinated by birds since I was little. Being from an island, I was always outside whether playing with my cousins or helping my parents with our goats.
