Here is a fun fact. House Wrens have spider friends. They often add spider egg sacs in their nesting materials. In lab studies, once the spiders hatched, they helped the wrens by devouring the nest parasites.

Today was the first time I've seen a jack rabbit - so, so cool! They were all amazing, but this guy was the Warrior Bunny. All scarred up and lived to tell the tale.

Oilbirds are incredibly unique! They are the only nocturnal, flying, fruit-eating bird in the world. They have a keen sense of smell, the most sensitive eyes of any known vertebrate, and a fully functional echolocation system. Ecuador 2019

Truly one of the strangest and most interesting moths I've seen. This tiny friend looked like a fly from far away, but a close look and it's a moth with a pinkish lobster tail, clear wings, & fuzzy pantaloons. It'll be fun to figure out what it is. Tatama National Park, Colombia

It was exciting to be able to photograph Blue Ghost (Phausis reticulate) fireflies last night. Unlike other firefly species that flash, Blue Ghosts leave their light on as they cruise around. This results in long trails of light. Several other species can be seen blinking too.

Before becoming flying sparklebutts, fireflies spend most of their lives as grubs. If you treat your lawn for grubs it'll kill any firefly larvae. This one hit home for me because my mom got mad at me for not treating the lawn!

Just a Pinocchio Anole hanging out by the lodge in Ecuador. These animals were thought to be extinct until a group of birders saw one crossing a road. They are thought to be slow moving, but we saw two males leaping between trees and chasing each other.

Indigo Buntings are one of my favorite birds. Their amazing blue color does not come from pigment - it comes instead from microscopic structures in the feathers that refract and reflect blue light.

One of the most stunning hummingbirds I saw in Ecuador was the Velvet-purple Coronet. It appears matte black until the light hits its feathers at just the right angle revealing a rich purple color.

It's one thing finding an owl with a birding group and another thing finding alone. I check stands of pine trees as owls like to roost in them. One day, I rounded a corner in a trail to a Great Horned Owl sitting in sun. Took a few shots and left this bird in peace. #SuperbOwl

If you see ants futzing around on the stem of a plant chances are there may be something really interesting that they're protecting. In this case, a miniature dragon. Not sure what the green bug is, but it's likely a True Bug, in the order Hemiptera, that drinks sap.

My sister, who passed away in 2016, once told a story about watching a tree across the way. All of a sudden, it exploded with tons of birds taking off. She told us, "it was full of fuckin' robins." Now, in honor of her, these birds are known in my family as fuckin' robins.

It was awe inspiring to stand in a dark, quiet grotto and see these birds today. This is an Oilbird, locally known in South America as the guácharo. The species is the only flying, nocturnal fruit eating bird in the world.

My first good owl photo. I was at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and this Short-eared Owl was hunting in short scrub near an impoundment. While I stood there chatting with other birders the owl came and landed in a nearby tree. Still one of my favorite photos. #SuperbOwl
