Luckily, I invested all my savings from 1991-2000 in equities and not in FDs/debt funds. This one right move resulted into 1) I could resign from Govt. job in 2000 2) I became financially independent by 2006 3) My dividend income is more than annual exp. of my family by 2016.

Share prices of many companies are down by 20-50% particularly in mid/small caps. Many investors must be experiencing this degree of fall first time. How you react on various degree of falls like 10, 20, 30, or 40% in your portfolio companies, would decide your future returns and longevity in the stock market.

Don’t ever get panicky with a fall in the market and don’t ever get too excited with a significant rise in the market. Continue with your strategy and reap rewards when things are in your favour. Every bull market is followed by bear market and a vice-versa. The winners are those who stick to their strategy.

When share prices go up, many investors keep buying at any price and when it goes down they keep selling at any price. Buying and selling must be based on future prospects of the companies and valuation.

If you buy a stock nowadays, the next day it goes down. You think that you have committed a mistake. If you done your homework properly and you are a genuine long term investor, then don’t worry. Just remember- “When stocks are attractive, you buy them. Sure, they can go lower. I've bought stocks at $12 that went to $2, but then they later went to $30. You just don't know when you can find the bottom.”—Peter Lynch

There is a debate going on whether to buy an apartment or to build a house on one’s own land. I prefer apartment from quality developers, reason being- 1- 24 hours electricity and water. 2- Reserve parking space. 3- Safety and security. 4- Swimming pool and club facilities. 5 -Good company for children and ourselves. 6- All maintenance is taken care of by society. In your own constructed house, you may get benefit of higher appreciation, roof, and more privacy but it comes with all the headache of managing everything. In most cases, people spend weekends on managing things like maintenance, plumbing, electricity and so on.

@Atulsingh_asan @Akshat_World It is in high demand. I bought another new apartment which I will get next year. 6-7 people of my own society have enquired and requested me to offer them first whenever I move out.

@Atulsingh_asan @Akshat_World My experience is different. I bought an apartment 22 years ago for 35 lakhs, still staying there and now it’s selling at 3.5 crores. You get “safety and security”, 24 hours water, electricity, reserve parking, and so on.

@gurjota The only way to beat inflation is to invest in undervalued growth assets with a long term perspective. Try to earn at least 2X of inflation.

Equities are a very different asset-class and have a nonlinear way to run. Two of my experiences- 1- Invested in a company in 2005, thinking that it should be three times in next 5 years. Luckily. It became 3X in six months and 5X in one year. 2- Bought another company in 2007, thinking that it would be 3X in five years. In next six years, it was range-bound despite significant increase in top line and bottom line. You need to learn the art of handling such non-linear path.

@Pankajstocks Many companies made me to wait for a very long period of time. One company I started buying in 2007, it didn’t not move up till 2013. Thereafter, it went up by 90 times in the last 10 years. I booked profit multiple times. I still hold some quantity.

Replying to all the comments- first vehicle (bike or car) depends upon three factors- need, net-worth, and aspiration. First car depends upon net-worth and aspiration. Thereafter, all cars should depend upon net-worth. The more net-worth you have, less spending in percentage terms should be used for luxury vehicles.

@ishmohit1 Result of poor governance is the rejection by the Voters. Result of poor/no process in investing is the losses.
