Excited that @JustinJDN and I will be able to present our work on risks of using synthetic data in model development @FAccTConference '24! We specify two key risks - 1) false confidence in dataset diversity and representation, and 2) consent circumvention.

We examine 1) a real world use-case of synthetic data, where synthetic datasets were generated for an evaluation of facial recognition technology, and 2) the importance of consent to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's regulation of data collection and affected models.
