May Gena Rowlands rest in peace. One of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen. The complexities of what it means to be human have never been more fully or richly on display than through her deeply nuanced performances. She will be missed.

Overheard this morning:
#CALeg
staffer’s spouse on speaker phone: “Don’t you have to go? It’s 9 a.m.”
Staffer: “No, it’s the Assembly and it’s end of session. They say 9 but really mean 9:30. Then they wonder why they are still here on the last day of session at 1 a.m.”
Another rule of advocacy:
If you respect legislators and not staff, your efforts will suffer.
Being a legislator is a thankless job. Away from family, stacks of materials, and little time to process. Who do you think they ask for guidance?
Staff is the ❤️ of the Capitol.
Staffer brain be like: hope my bill passes, can’t believe that guy said that to me, have to call that advocate back, brunch with mom on Sat., have to wear more comfortable shoes tomorrow, why did we ever sign on as co-author on that, maybe xyz is a good bill idea for 2024… 😴

@ZavalaA
is one of the most courageous and hard-working journalists in CA. Her reporting has made CA a better place.
As the old adage goes: “Journalism is printing something that someone does not want printed. Everything else is public relations”

This story was written by a reporter who was nowhere near the California State Capitol on Saturday and rips a bunch of work from other journalists without citing them.
You don’t talk to people like that, especially women witnesses. Essayli is a piece of sh*t. Rs have a solid SOTS video response, Grove doing great work, and Joe P. et al. making thoughtful contributions
Get Essayli in line. Otherwise, third house will do it for you

@GavinNewsom
has issued a statement on the passing of Allan Zaremberg.
.
We would respectfully note that Rex Hime has also passed away.
.
Two giants in the Capitol community. Both will be missed. Heartfelt condolences to their friends and family.

Min thought Glazer was joking around about denying permission. Turns out Glazer was just being a d*ck. Termed-out legislators can be grumpy as f*ck

When a staffer has been working on a bill idea during the interim and then their boss decides not to introduce the bill when session convenes:

When an advocate is no longer allowed to testify remotely and explains to the Chair what they sacrificed to be at the hearing in person:

Advocate: “I have a

draft proposal on my phone for your consideration. I know it’s right before bill introduction deadline but, believe me, your boss was our first choice for author!”
…
Capitol Staffer:
Overheard in the swing space:
“Heard of the Jacquelyn?”
“Huh?”
“Sutter Club but geared to women in third house who want to socialize after work in a luxe member-only environment”
“I see these fools all day in the building. I don’t need to pay to see them at night too”
#CALeg
Advocate: Still have room for a bill?
Staffer: Send it over!
*staffer reviews*
Staffer: Actually, I was mistaken. We are at capacity. Sorry about that!

Advocates heading to

Assembly Appropriations this morning just to leave their coffee outside the door per the sergeants and then wait two hours to give a “me too” on a suspense item:
Legislative fellow: “My boss wants to introduce an amazing and totally new bill in 2024. It has definitely never been tried before and surely won’t be opposed by anyone, including your organization. Can we meet to discuss?”
Senior advocate: 👇🏻

Amen.

staff are smart and hard working. And they know the advocates who will work sponsored and important bills versus those who will create more work. Makes it hard to move forward important issues and topics when solid public servants don’t believe you will follow
We all have moments when we think it isn’t worth it to be involved in the public policy process. Thousands of hours away from our families. Losses along the way, etc
Then along comes a courageous and thoughtful journalist who has the grit to see us through
Well done 🫡

WATCH: Assembly Elections Chair
@gailforassembly
refuses to answer questions after blocking a bill that would prohibit use of NDAs in California’s lawmaking process.
She said she didn’t have enough time to review the bill, despite her record of voting for fast-tracked bills.
When you leave the building after they gavel down, knowing the work you did on a particular bill — without any acknowledgement or fanfare and, in most cases, the credit going to others — in some small way makes California a better place:
Just you knowing is enough ❤️
