Just heard the
@elliegoulding
version of ‘River’ and I think it’s great. More than anything, as a huge
@JoniMitchellcom
fan, anything that brings a young audience to her work is fine by me.
Just read that Oxford dictionaries named
#Youthquake
as their word of the year for 2017.
I read a large selection of news every day for my job. Number of times I’ve read Youthquake... Once. Today.
I think word of the year should be
#The
. It’s still largely ignored but popular.
Every working day of my life in Dubai I have spent at least half an hour sat with this wonderful bloke. Moaning, laughing and winding each other up..
Today I found out out that he’s gone and I am devastated. Sorry about your plans, Malcolm. They sounded truly wonderful x
Just woke up on our last day in
#Dubai
. We’ve seen everybody we need to see. Done the hugs. Reminisced & laughed. Shed the tears. Had those quiet moments of contemplation. And now, as the door closes, I feel like we’re leaving Wonka’s factory. A surreal place, to say the least.
I’ve walked 7km around my garden this morning. It’s monotonous but it’s manageable. To the idiots still walking dogs, walking their kids or forcing their maids to walk their dogs... STOP IT! I’ve been so tempted to phone the police. You have one day’s grace.
Two kids back from uni. One in with her little sister (getting on like a house that isn’t on fire) and son has turned our office into his bedroom.
#duvetknowitschristmas
Off to my old pal, Malcolm Taylor’s memorial today. And the weather sums up my feelings. Moody. Right now I should be sat prepping my show as he meanders out of the
@DubaiEye1038FM
studio and yaps on for half an hour, putting me off what I’m doing. I miss you so much, Malc 💔
Just about to start the first show of my final week on-air in
#Dubai
after 18 years on
#radio
over here. Feels very surreal. This mic has been home since 2005.
Watched The Power of the Dog. A beautiful, haunting, heartbreaking film which won’t leave my mind. With this and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, I think Benedict Cumberbatch could be this generations Daniel Day Lewis. Captivating.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just watched our son, Leo, get voted-in as Head Boy at
@InfoECDubai
via video message. We’re absolutely delighted for him. An intelligent, well-mannered, kind and generous kid. He’s worked so hard throughout his time at English College. Very proud.
@KHDA
Some end-of-an-era business going on here in
#Dubai
today. Luckily I am not an absolute emotional wreck (I cry at Repair Shop, SUTC Bake Off, every sad song, etc).
The last song I ever played on the radio in
#Dubai
, so we had a singalong to it at our final ever quiz night. Thank you everyone who ever came and, of course, thank you to
@JamesBlunt
I love this guy. I have no idea who he is and, initially, I found all the positivity a little bit “not me”… However, over time I realised it was me gripping on to bitterness that was the problem. A top guy! More power to your elbow, Giles.
One for my
#Dubai
friends… Genuine conversation I just had in Greenwich B&Q:
ME: Do you have bum guns?
B&Q GUY: Excuse me?!
ME: Sorry. Silver bum guns. Shatafs.
B&Q GUY: What’s that?
ME: The shower for your bum.
B&Q GUY [wide eyed] Erm… We don’t sell those.
Today is our daughter Betsy Pearl’s performance at
@DubaiOpera
. Her last show in
#Dubai
before we move to London. It’s sure to be an emotional night and I know all dads are proud of their kids but God only knows how mine turned out so talented with me as a dad ❤️
Hessa Street in Dubai needs investigating by paranormal scientists. Whatever time of day or night you attempt to drive up or down it, there’s a traffic jam, even though there are no discernible reasons for the traffic jam. Spooky. Irritatingly spooky.
Today is the 15th anniversary of my first
#Dubai
radio show. Show 4107.
I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who’s listened, texted, called, commented & approached me whilst drunk (them) at concerts.
Here are my first 2 pics in
#Dubai
. No
@BurjKhalifa
. No
@TheDubaiMall
As you may be aware from my recent tweet history, I cannot wait to be back in the UK. However, one thing I will miss in
#Dubai
is the mall toilets. Incredible! The last time I went in a mall toilet in England it resembled an abandoned psychiatric ward from a horror film.
To the unpleasant woman who just verbally abused me in the school car park. No, it wasn’t me who beeped at you. I genuinely hope your day gets better because you seem miserable. I also hope your taste in clothes picks up, too, because your green trousers do nothing for you.
What’s that noise?
Its
@liamgallagher
causing a rock n roll earthquake in
#Dubai
.
He’s two songs in and it’s already the best concert this city has ever seen.
As we continue our journey to leave
#Dubai
after 18 years, we sold both the cars this week. Today I drive my Mustang for the last time. Love this car. Proper midlife crisis wheels. My daughter called it ‘The Moustache’ after mishearing ‘Mustang’ when we first got it. Sad day.
I went to bed on the kick of the last penalty. Gutted but proud of the team & having enjoyed a great month of footy.
What I’ve woke up to makes me ashamed to be English. I sincerely hope the full weight of the law comes down on the thugs in the videos and the racists online.
8 years ago today, at this very moment, I was sitting in hospital.
Five hours later, I was holding the most beautiful baby I had ever seen. And for eight years she has continued to amaze me on a daily basis.
Happy birthday Betsy Pearl.
Well, today’s the day. This is why I left an 18 year career in Dubai radio and why we left the life we knew for the unknown, with no prospects & a fast-diminishing savings account. Today, the Tiny Terrorist starts her new school in London. Exciting stuff.
In the
@Dubai92
studio for my final
#radio
show of 2021. What a year it’s been... A big, horrible, hospital battle with Covid in February, launching our podcast in May, sending our eldest to university in September, turning 50 in November… we survived! See you on-air in 2022 x
Hospital this morning. Got the all-clear. The big tumour was benign.
Came home.
Our daughter finally passed on her 8th (bloody expensive) driving test.
After a month of really crappy days, this has been a good one. Pushing my luck by dropping hints about a big veggie curry.
Right now
@khda
’s social media team in
#Dubai
are limbering up to the Rocky music, lifting weights with their sarcastic typing fingers and getting ready to burn so junior blaggers. Can’t wait.
Big day today. Our lad, Leo, is back in school. We expected him to be off for at least another few weeks after the operation but his recovery has been remarkable. Thanks to everyone who has messaged over the last month. Means a lot. Horrible school run today. Proper pea-souper!
Highlight of tonight’s
@JamesBlunt
gig in
#Dubai
… He starts strumming the acoustic guitar… The crowd starts cheering… He says “It’s not what you think it is… They all sound the same.”
What a lad. Love him.
Well. That’s one of the smaller hailstones that’s been bouncing around our garden. Bigger than my wedding ring. Worst weather I have ever seen in Dubai. Kids were terrified.
Here’s my no-spoiler review of
#Oppenheimer
…
The film is 3hrs. I needed a wee half an hour in. I had a urology procedure recently, which means when I need to go for a wee, I have to get there quickly.
For two and a half hours, I held that wee in. That’s how good this film was.
Time to say goodbye. Difficult moment this, watching my wife’s heart get smashed into a million tiny pieces and I’m not sure I’ll ever find them all. 💔
I bought fireworks for later, although I fear my Dubai-Brat children’s expectations may be a little high. They’ve only ever seen the ridiculous displays on the Palm or Burj Khalifa. Tonight they will experience their first ever Catherine Wheel.
💥 Shit’s about to get real. 💥
Seen a few people posting this and it proper got me. A huge part of a lot of people’s lives for that decade. And subsequently, each of our kids have fallen in love with the show and had their Friends moment. Always hated hearing about his troubles off-screen. Just sad, sad news.
We’ve peeled the veg.
Betsy Pearl has read ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and has gone up to bed.
The treats are out for Santa.
It’s a Wonderful Life is on the telly.
I’m about as happy as I ever get. And I hope, wherever you are, you have a very Merry Christmas. x
Got so much feedback on how much a lot of us are missing 7 Days newspaper in
#Dubai
, I wondered if I shouldn’t do a regular “fantasy” 7 Days Letters Live-Stream. You guys DM me your letters, add a made-up name (and area) and I read them out live. What do you think?
#RT
This is a bit of
#MiddleEast
history right here. These are the “Wheels of Steel” belonging to my old friend and
#Dubai
legend, Malcolm Taylor. Picturing him as a chiselled, young DJ, spinning the bangers has put a big smile on my face this morning. Miss you, Malc 💔
Happy birthday to my dad. Seen here probably lying to my son about the size of a fish he caught or the correct angle to lay roof beams for maximum precipitation run-off or something.
I’ve only been lucky enough to ‘turn left’ a few of times in my life. I’m not married to a pilot & prefer to spend the additional thousands on gadgets.
One thing I never did was have the clichéd ‘behind the bar holding champagne’ photo. It’s screams chav-done-good! Please stop.
I moved back to the UK two months ago. They said it would take time to acclimatise… To fit in… To have it feel like home again.
I just reported a pothole to the local council. I’m back.
I just picked-up my daughter from school and in front of me is a lad from my son’s 6th form class... Driving a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Apparently another kid in the class drives a G-Wagon.
My first car was a 1979 hand-me-down, brown & caramel, Ford Cortina MkIV Ghia. I was 24.
I had my exit interview in
#Dubai
yesterday. I figured it would be a board room, management & HR on one side of an impossibly long conference table, me on the other.
What really happened was a nice lady took me for a coffee in a cafe. Like the losing team on ‘The Apprentice’.
Our lad, Leo, got three A stars and an A in his A-levels today. I’m very disappointed he won’t be following in the family tradition of signing-on the dole but I still love him regardless. You’ve got to let them forge their own path.
There are some moments, as a Dad, that money can’t buy and words can’t describe. I don’t know where she gets it from or how she does it but when she does, she rips the roof off! Well some to our little Annie at
@DubaiOpera
tonight ❤️
My 11yr old daughter, who was born & spent her whole life in the UAE, used an umbrella on the way to school yesterday. Because of her very limited experience of this (a) I had to teach her the shake-off routine at the end and (b) she really took exception to the word “brolly”. ☔️
One of the most difficult radio shows I’ve ever done today. The listener feedback from nations the world over has been beautiful. The sentiment is lovely but I have been a bit of a wreck on air. I don’t think I’ll ever forget today. Can’t wait to get home to my girls.
Lou Ottens, the inventor of the cassette tape, has passed away.
For me, cassettes were ZX Spectrum games & mixtapes. I loved them. What this guy did was very important to people my age. RIP
