Dynamic faces are great, but videos are a nightmare for experimental control, so many of us use dynamic morphs of photos.
Except we showed that if you can’t use videos with natural face motion, you might be better off using static faces 😬

I've been playing with Midjourney AI, and it's very difficult to generate an upside-down version of an object that it has only seen upright. Especially faces. Sometimes I think it has done a good job… Until I realise it hasn’t. Turn this image right-side-up to see why. 🧵

AI image synthesis tools are redundancy processing machines: they feed on repeating patterns in their training data, digest them, compress them, & spit them out again, sometimes in strangely distorted ways. This is particularly apparent in Midjourney's new »Zoom Out« feature

I’m about to publish a study that collected longer responses for this exact reason :) we used GPT-4 to do a thematic analysis. Imo it provided much better data than the forced-choice we would’ve used - but people will always compare it to human analysis of long-form data instead.
