My dad died shortly before I graduated, so turning up was hard. He'd tell anyone who'd listen about me, and read my papers even though I told him not to. I wish I’d known he needed to talk about the things on his mind, all the things that fill the journals that he left behind.

First experiment from my PhD! Dynamic faces are great, but videos are a nightmare for experimental control, so many of us use dynamic morphs of photos. Except we showed that if you can’t use videos with natural face motion, you might be better off using static faces 😬

@peachprc1 @breecorthorn I wouldn’t like that kind of comedy if the responses to his characters were scripted. Those responses are the real comedy. Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius and gets people to say some crazy shit candidly. The film was definitely necessary atm.

I've been playing with Midjourney AI, and it's very difficult to generate an upside-down version of an object that it has only seen upright. Especially faces. Sometimes I think it has done a good job… Until I realise it hasn’t. Turn this image right-side-up to see why. 🧵

New research shows that our brains maintain a steady understanding of our environment by focusing on the teamwork of neurons over time, rather than how strongly each neuron responds, which helps us process rapid changes. Who wants to do this with dynamic stimuli?

It's not just "too soon" for a Port Arthur film, we shouldn't be making films about mass shootings. Gunmen know they're likely to die before seeing their own media frenzy, they are motivated by the idea of it. The fact that it might be made into a feature film one day is enough.

AI image synthesis tools are redundancy processing machines: they feed on repeating patterns in their training data, digest them, compress them, & spit them out again, sometimes in strangely distorted ways. This is particularly apparent in Midjourney's new »Zoom Out« feature 1/7
