Public transit funding is in trouble as California state leaders hammer out the state budget. Your representatives and key budget leaders need to hear from you right now (well, best during business hours): Now there is a tool to help make those calls! https://t.co/EE0qssvOIb

The day before voting, the @sfchronicle has reported crime has dropped hugely in Oakland this year under @MayShengThao’s leadership. “The city has recorded 67 homicides this year — a 35% decrease compared to this time in 2023” Oakland, let’s not go back to chaos. Vote No.

Past Oakland elections have seen big money expenditures by people and groups seeking to influence voters. This time, 1 person has put up $1.7M supporting the mayor and DA recalls, and now a whole slate of candidates hoping to sweep down-ballot races. https://t.co/S7lcXoTBJh

Piedmont resident Philip Dreyfuss recently spent thousands on a mailer backing candidates for city attorney and City Council and put up $124,000 on a campaign to eliminate ranked-choice voting.

13 years ago, November 2 2011, tens of thousands of demonstrators shut down the Port of Oakland. The action was the centerpiece of a "general strike" that had been called by an Occupy Oakland general assembly the previous week, after the police violently cleared their camps

For anybody still considering a vote for Jill Stein as some kind of principled something something…

the recalls’ main proponent wants to ban gay marriage. idk what else you need to know before voting. i’m sticking with @MayorShengThao and @PPrice_Cares
This mailer backed by a committee whose top funder is Philip Dreyfuss supports both recalls and also is against a tax measure for wildfires, expanding the public ethics commission, and state props for public school bonds, ending involuntary servitude, reaffrimig same sex marriage

Vote NO on the recalls! The recall organizers and funders are not aligned with Oakland values Not only do many of them not even live in Oakland, but their hateful anti-LGBTQ statements are out of line
"Piedmont hedge fund manager Philip Dreyfuss has yet to answer why he is spending more than $1 million to recall Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price. Why does a guy who lives in what Zillow pegs as a seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom, $6.1

And give me a break about Stein "building a movement." I've been organizing in the climate space for 20 years and the only time Stein has ever reached out is at the last second to demand to speak at a rally and hog the mic. She's out for herself, not our collective future.

Which, in turn, incentivizes readers to go elsewhere for their news.

I understand clickbait-y headlines. But to not list in the article the businesses shut down or not to link to them -- makes the article something that adds to the workload of the reader. It doesn't help them. It tells readers that there is info they need and you don't have it

"Something disruptive is happening in your general area today but we won't specify where" Is it my favorite restaurant that's suddenly closing today so I need to make new plans? Will I not be able to pick up stuff from a drycleaner because they're closed for the action?

From a journalism perspective, an article that covers a "businesses shutting down in protest" story but doesn't list the businesses does the reader a disservice. It's like saying "protestors shut down a highway" without naming the highway. Readers make decisions based on news

I wonder how many Oaklanders dropped their Washington Post subscription and start chipping in to @Oaklandside recently
The Post lost $77 million last year. Bezos didn’t buy it to make a profit, & the Post doesn’t fire ppl when revenue decreases. Bezos bought the Post for the PRESTIGE, power & influence that comes with owning it. That came from YOU And you have the power to take that from him

If this is how the GOP is talking about other people when they’re *asking* for power, imagine what they’re gonna do if they get it

Going into election, Oakland hasn't had a murder in 3 weeks, only 1 murder in the entire month. It's a staggering nearly 50 murders fewer than the City had under the leadership of O'Malley, Armstrong and Schaaf in late October 2021. On track to have lowest homicides in 5 years
