Hi
#mentalhealth
friends!
@sheila_rauch
and I published a book on neuroscience and exposure therapy for
#PTSD
. If you’re interested, you can check out a FREE chapter (on neuroscience and in vivo exposure). Really proud of this little book!
Medical professionals: If you’re in a position to screen for domestic violence or suicide risk, please take the time to ask the question in an OPEN ENDED way. I hear things like, “You’re not suicidal or anything right?” and “No domestic abuse at home?” ALL THE TIME.
😩 😩😩 the hijacking of psych terms and trivializing of traumatic stress on Tik ToK. Are you guarded in relationships? Trauma reaction. Are you unguarded in relationships? Trauma reaction. Do you part your hair this way? Trauma reaction. 🤦🏻♀️
Reminder: Trauma and PTSD are not synonyms.
Trauma is an experience. It’s impact can be minimal/extensive, specific/broad, depending on many factors we don’t understand well.
PTSD is one of several mental health conditions that sometimes develop after experiencing trauma.
Do I look different? I have been living in the US for 18 years, but as of today...
I’m an American citizen!!
I went in for my interview and unexpectedly had the ceremony right afterwards. Feeling overwhelmed...
Our DoD grant was FUNDED! We’ll test an integrated, accelerated (massed) treatment for 3 commonly occurring problems: PTSD, insomnia, and nightmares. This was our third try to this mechanism (plus several more to others) and now IT IS HAPPENING!

Psychiatry resident text: “can’t make supervision, I’m not feeling well”
Me, who was also texting my partner about our sick dog and possible vet visit, but accidentally responding to the resident I supervise: “you should get a pee sample just in case”
Realized a week later.
I’m so excited to see this in press! We looked at the comparative effectiveness of exposure-based therapies for
#PTSD
and tested several potential demographic, clinical, and treatment-related moderators (N = 4929). 🧵
After 6+ years of sleeping on the same side of the bed, my partner and I are going to make a switch. Has anyone successfully done this or is this uncharted territory for humankind?
I really do appreciate that you are probably extremely busy, but these questions are so important. Taking 5 seconds to make eye contact when you ask these questions would really help too. 🙏🏼
Fun milestone - just had a paper accepted which makes my 100th* publication!
*recall that we all agreed that # of pubs matters above quality, impact, and all else 🙄😂

Can Prolonged Exposure therapy for
#PTSD
be delivered in 60 min?
YES! 60-min PE was non-inferior to standard 90-min PE in efficacy (symptoms reduction) and efficiency (same # of sessions needed to recover).

I see the term “trauma treatment” often but it doesn’t make sense to me.
Trauma is not a mental health condition. It’s an experience. It can be linked with various mental health problems.
I never know if ppl actually mean PTSD treatment or trauma-informed care or…???

Really proud of this paper showing that post-workshop consultation improves self-efficacy delivering prolonged exposure (PE), use of PE, and clinical outcomes of patients with

compared to workshop training alone.

#ABCTSeattle23
! Another fantastic conference full of learning, sharing, and (re)connecting with people I admire deeply. I was honored to become a new Fellow of
@ABCTNOW
! Hope to see everyone again in Philly next year!
If you’re wondering what a nerd nightmare looks like, I had an anxiety dream last night about being at an academic conference (
@ABCTNOW
) and I couldn’t find my room because the hotel kept shape shifting and I ended up missing the whole conference. MISSING THE WHOLE CONFERENCE! 😱
⭐️New meta-analysis shows 14% relapse rate for anxiety disorders treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). ⭐️
CBT teaches clients a variety of skills to manage anxiety - skills they take with them after therapy ends to better handle future stress.
As a
#CBTWorks
therapist,
#physicaltherapy
was a humbling experience for me.
Just like CBT:
1. The exercises are uncomfortable.
2. You have to tolerate this discomfort to recover.
3. It can difficult to remember what the homework was and fit it in!

So I went to my office for the first time in months and found this shiny new gem sitting on my desk!
Happy to see this published. I co-wrote a chapter on
#PTSD
treatment with ⭐️
@VA_PTSD_Info
colleagues.
Looking forward to reading some other chapters!
Very sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Jack Rachman. His contributions to our understanding of anxiety and OCD are incredibly extensive and significant. He was brilliant psychologist, a published wine connoisseur, and a dear friend to my late father. A giant in our field.
Is EMDR an exposure-based treatment? Discuss!
Me: yes. Different form than say PE (brief, dual-attention vs prolonged, focused attn), but procedurally it’s exposure to trauma memories. Mechanisms may or may not be different (we know little about to mechs) but still exposure.
🤔Are those 90-min PE sessions dragging on? Tough to fit into your schedule?😩
Try all-new ✨60-min PE!✨😃
Works just as well and as quickly as 90-min sessions! Now with fewer organizational implementation barriers!
(So happy to see this in press!)
I want to get the word out that I will soon be hiring a full time research coordinator and a part time research assistant/ PTSD assessor to work with me on a recently funded DoD study testing written exposure therapy for PTSD in the military. Official posting coming soon!
We tested online exposure therapy for PTSD delivered by peer coaches. Non-uptake + dropout were major challenges, but clinical outcomes were strong! For some veterans, this cost-effective program worked well. w/

Seems like everyone uses some fancy program to manage work tasks. Am I the only one who just makes messy lists and notes on paper (with doodle collaborations from my 5yo)? I do somehow get stuff done...
“Let’s do a meta-analysis!” I said. It will be fun. It should be easy. Now I’m part way through and uughhhh the coding is mind-numbing and there’s so much of it...
Congratulations to

- whose work has influenced the field tremendously. A very well deserved recognition!
Mmmm that new book smell!
Fresh off the press and filled with the latest info on treating post traumatic stress. Glad I could be part of this - so many ⭐️ contributors!
Why is effective
#PTSD
treatment underused?
Looking at PE use in the military, we found that even when therapists were trained and motivated, organizational factors made it nearly impossible to use these treatments.
