Aerodynamic Design Engineer and an Aerodynamicist in a short thread, as I think there is a bit of confusion between the two. I'm happy to answer questions but any specific aero questions will be answered better by an aero.

The aerodynamicist will develop aerodynamic concepts by creating surface models on CAD, meshing them and running them in CFD. Then, they do CFD post processing and analyse the results.
There are also Aerodynamic surface design engineers, who specialise in surface model design.

In short, It is the Aerodynamic design engineer's job to take the surface models and effectively turn them into solid models in CAD, which are then used to manufacture various components from. These components are for the 60% scale wind tunnel model of the real F1 car.

We decide what materials and what manufacturing processes we should make each part from. We can use FEA to help us decide which material is required, or to ensure our designs give us the required strength, stiffness, deflection etc.

incredibly competitive to get into, so just keep
trying and eventually you can make it!

These surface models give us a visual representation of the car's exterior but have zero thickness and zero mass. So the aerodynamicists are providing us with the shape of the bodywork, wings, floor etc. Here's an example of a surface model below.

Once the aerodynamicist has analysed the results from CFD, they will decide whether or not to run the concept in the wind tunnel. Any concepts they choose to run in the tunnel, get passed on to the aerodynamic design engineers.

I started off by studying Motorsport Design Engineering back home in Scotland. We didn't have a Formula Student team but we did have a Formula Ford. We worked on this and took it to the track throughout the course. This was my first hands on experience with a Race Car.

So, I volunteered to help out a Formula Ford racing team, Enigma Motorsport. I did Data Engineering for them whenever I was free and also helped out in the workshop. This was definitely valuable experience for my CV.

While working, I was also applying for various jobs in F1 teams. I had interviews for a few different teams. I got rejected several times due to a lack of experience. But I always took the positives from my interviews and learned for the next one.

After I graduated with my BEng(Hons) degree, I moved down to England to study a Master's degree in Advanced Motorsport Engineering at Cranfield uni. My priority at the time was to graduate from Cranfield with my MSc. Although, I also recognised that experience is key to success.

I wasn't confident/ lucky enough to get a job in F1 straight after graduating from uni. So I worked for 2 automotive companies, Titan and then YASA ltd, over a period around 2.5 years. I gained lots of experience and confidence during this time.

A very large percentage of aerodynamic wetted parts are 3d printed for the wind tunnel models. We need to be able to produce lots of parts quickly and 3d printing is ideal for this.
It's not so common on the rear cars.

There will definitely differences between cfd and wind tunnel model performance. We are designing parts which are 60% scale of the real car. So sometimes we have to compromise accuracy on a part due to it being smaller and thinner. We keep the delta as small as possible.

I first calculated the acceleration for each phase using V^2=U^2+2as (assuming a straight of length 1000m).
I then calculated the time for each phase using t=(v-vo)/a.
Total times:
A = 13.14s
B= 13.22s
C = 13.19s.
God knows if I'm right though 😂

It's such a shame that Lewis' DRS failed yesterday. Had he been where he should've been in quali, we could've had a great fight for the lead. Although very pleased with another double podium.

Yeah this is the car Lewis drove during the final race of last season. It is in the exact state that it left the track (it has not been cleaned etc.)

Yeah compromises are required at times. We obviously try to keep our designs as close as possible to the surfaces, but sometimes we need to make changes.

I don't really know how to describe the experience from changing teams tbh. It was exciting being offered a job from the 8 time world champions but also sad to leave my colleagues at Alpha Tauri. I wasn't a Red Bull employee, they are two separate teams and no difficulties 🙂

There are lots of different roles in the team. Aerodynamics is only one department. Data Science is definitely important 😊. I'd recommend having a look at team's websites, specifically their careers pages. There you will see different role requirements

I believe it's because the regulations allow a max size of 60%, to reduce costs. Ideally you want the model to be as big as possible to get a closer corelation to real life.

The timing can differ a lot. It depends how big the projects are. Some concepts can be tested in the tunnel within a couple of days. Others can take over a week to fully design and manufacture.

I think the main issue is visas tbh, not education itself. As I am British, I've never personally had any experience in this area. But I believe it is entirely possible to get into F1 from non European countries!

You definitely don't need a master’s degree. I just wanted to do one as it was my personal goal. There are some very talented people I have worked with in F1 who don't have a uni degree. Ofcourse, uni helps but it's not the only way.

Aerospace Engineering is a great degree to get into F1 as an aerodynamicist. There are lots of interns that join teams midway through their degree. I'd recommend applying for an internship. It is not essential to do one though, I didn't do one but it could open the door for him

The real manufactured parts will come under more scrutiny. They have to be as close to perfect as possible.
