[CW transphobia] 🧵 This Pride month a lot is being said by
@UKLabour
about its history on LGBTQ+ rights so we thought we'd provide some recent history of what one of its MPs has been up to over the past three years, because they seem reluctant to mention it.
Opposition to Rosie Duffield's transphobia from Whitstable feminists in the local paper ✊️
"...as older feminists active in women's campaigns including women's refuges as far back as the 70s we want to make it clear that we do not share these views, we are trans allies..."
Banishing expressions of queerness and Pride until kids are "teenagers/young adults" is how closets are made, and closets can kill. This is Rosie Duffield promoting the ideology of Section 28 but will
@UKLabour
do anything?
When you're so riddled with hate that you have a kneejerk response to the word 'inclusion'.
(The theme actually focusses on education, training, science and health, but sure go off)
Quite surprised that the Greens don’t make an explicit commitment to outlawing LGBT+ conversion therapy in their manifesto. I’d have thought this had strong agreement among all left parties. More detailed positions and campaign asks are out there - but why not in its manifesto?
Labour promised in its manifesto to deliver a full trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy, but not all of its MPs seem to agree with their own manifesto...
One of your MPs says she'd rather go to prison than use someone's preferred pronouns, rolls her eyes at trans suicide, describes trans people as "dressing up", endorses tweets denying persecution of trans people, and Labour describe her as an important voice.
#DuffieldOut
Not for the first time, Rosie Duffield has liked holocaust denial.
JKR is currently doubling down on her denial of Nazi persecution of trans & gender queer people while simultaneously demonstrating what the vast majority of our community has said all along:
No LGB without the T
If you needed any proof that the Gender Critical arguments against a full conversion ban are a garbled mess of fallacy and cry bullying, then do watch Rosie Duffield's speech. This is supposed to be about banning practices that damage LGBTQ+ people's mental and physical health...
Rosie Duffield is launching her campaign on Canterbury Pride weekend. If she does not speak for you come and lend your voice and your solidarity Sunday 9th June 11.45am Westgate Hall Canterbury.
Rosie Duffield trending because of all the GCs asking when Labour will apologise to her, but for what? She has kept the whip and her job and has not been sanctioned for any of her transphobic output. Being shunned in the Members' tearoom doesn't make you a martyr.
I hope
@pridecanterbury
considers this for next year. The party of Wes Streeting, and the people who campaigned for Rosie Duffield, shouldn't be allowed to march next us.
@LabourBristol
For clarity, this is old parade footage. Until Labour commits to standing up for our entire community, they will not be welcome to march. Our ban on political parties marches remains in place this year.
Sorry but it's a bit rich local Labour councillors who have said NOTHING about Duffield making the same comments & rolling her eyes at an account of trans suicide, suddenly giving a shit now. This one used to like all the terf tweets too. It's so disiningenuous it's nauseating.
Our MP Rosie Duffield once more liking the hateful fanatic gl*nn*r who is effectively denying nazi persecution of trans people. Presumably not official
@UKLabour
policy?
Utterly disingenuous from Duffield who's spent 4 yts tweeting non stop gender critical rhetoric. Did someone force her to go on GB News repeatedly? To go on TV with her dinosaur badge? To have fluff pieces in the Telegraph and Times? To go to LGBA events?
I agree with Rosie Duffield! The benefit cap is cruel and needs to go. Typically the article is all about her though & she's somehow managed to make a piece about child poverty terf coded while using a picture of her having forty quid pasta with a billionaire
Apologise for what?? "Labour has treated her so badly!" they shriek.
She has kept hold of an £80k job with all of its perks, platforms & privileges while she spends her time slagging off other Labour MPs and hanging out with Tories and radical transphobes.
Recently Rosie Duffield said that campaigning against surrogacy was the next hill she was going to die on and now she's on a panel discussing falling birth rates with anti-abortionists
...it's not true that conversion practices are already banned & it's not true that lesbians (hi 👋) are being forced to sleep with anyone - which has nothing to do with this bill anyway. When asked about the reversability of treatments she can't even string a sentence in response
No one from the Labour Party, nationally or locally, has said whether they'll be campaigning for her at the next election but their silence has left a lot of LGBTQ+ people here resolute that they will never vote Labour, possibly ever again. Happy Pride.
#DuffieldOut
I suppose it's on brand that on the day of Canterbury Pride our MP was hanging out with her straight mates discussing ways to limit other people's rights.
...and then to dismiss attempts to ban conversion therapies (which are akin to torture) as social media fodder when she has made a name for herself by doing just that? Shameful.
There's an ongoing campaign by GCs to vilify the Pride flag and get GC followers to say they're scared of it or oppressed by it, which our MP seems to be on board with. It's blatant homophobia & transphobia designed to fuel a moral panic, and it gets people hurt.
This is inaccurate and biased reporting from
@Kent_Online
Duffield labels herself as a "defender of women's rights" which is highly contentious and many, many women disagree. Where's the balance?
Kent has been named as a hotspot for homophobic and transphobic hate crime.
We need an MP that represents the LGBTQ+ community and will tackle this insidiousness, not help to fuel it with their gender critical rhetoric.

@MetroUK
So the Labour Party are fine with Duffield's behaviour. It comes as no surprise, but if she is to be the official Labour candidate then we'll assume everyone campaigning for her is fine with it too.
@paulprentice
So campaigning for someone who opposes a trans inclusive ban on conversion therapy then? Asking LGBT+ people to vote for someone who opposes a ban on their own torture?
@alisapower
Rosie (and others) have a habit of implying that this is a generational divide when we know that's not true. There is plenty of opposition locally from people of all ages and backgrounds.
Today is International Day Against Homophobia , Biphobia and Transphobia.
Canterbury Labour Party will always support and campaign for LGBTQ Rights. Labour is the party of Equality 🌹
This year's theme is Together always: united in diversity 🏳️🌈
#IDAHOBIT2023
Article about the primary school attacked for its Pride flags, with a quote from a local Labour councillor... who is campaigning for Rosie Duffield who herself has endorsed fearmongering about the Pride flag
and campaigns against inclusive LGBTQ education
WE NEED YOU: Queers and allies, you don't have to do anything but show up. This will be a peaceful demonstration of solidarity and pride. Canterbury deserves better.

No wonder
@HackneyLabour
has suspended the council by-election campaign for its candidate Laura Pascal in Cazenove. Understand Pascal has been suspended from the party after her virulent transphobia was exposed on social media. The Lab right knew all about it when fielding her.
Unfortunately (and not mentioned in this article) it was a Labour MP who helped draft it. Duffield's Biology Matters project at Policy Exchange created the blueprint. LOTO did nothing, so many of us are taking that as tacit agreement.
She's describing her constituents who pay her wages and want to know what sort of an MP is representing them, and considering she's already liked holocaust-denyibg transphobia, the mind boggles on what she's holding back on.
@paulprentice
Are you seriously trying to claim a moral high ground when you're campaigning for Rosie Duffield and when your party has thrown trans rights under the bus time and time again? Really?
@UKLabour
Unless you live in Canterbury where the Labour Party expects us to vote for Rosie Duffield the author of the next Section 28 who campaigns against a conversion therapy ban and denies nazi persecution of trans people.
Duffield did a big old homophobia to go along with the relentless churn of transphobia we have all come to expect. No mealy-mouthed "of course two mummies are normal" mitigates the fact she sees the Pride flag as a safeguarding concern.
@UKLabour
are apparently fine with this.
@Keir_Starmer
@AngelaRayner
You refuse to even acknowledge the transphobia in your own party let alone do anything about it. Your MP for Canterbury makes exactly the same comments as Sunak did today and has been doing for years and you call her an important voice. This is the landscape Brianna grew up in.
@CanterburyCLP
You know there is something you could all do to demonstrate support for LGBTQ+ facing queerphobia and you're choosing not to do it. That's not solidarity.
Rosie Duffield is launching her campaign on Canterbury Pride weekend. If she does not speak for you come and lend your voice and your solidarity Sunday 9th June 11.45am Westgate Hall Canterbury.
...Rosie Duffield has previously campaigned against a trans-inclusive ban and signed a letter to the Sunday Times saying as much, yet she was elected under the Labour manifesto...
We did not vote for a Labour MP for them to then spend all their time working with right-wing think tanks, right-wing politicians, and right-wing media. She is actively creating a hostile climate for her LGBT+ constituents and is seemingly answerable to no one.
... she hasn't said whether she will vote against her own party when they introduce the bill to ban conversion therapy, and nobody was able to ask her in the run up to the election because she avoided all public questioning...
Labour don't get to be on both sides here. If you're campaigning for a transphobe you're not an ally whether you think you are, or not. You are campaigning to saddle this constituency and its queer community with a hostile MP for another 5 years. You're not an ally.
There's a few differences between Sandi Toksvig and the high profile GC figures. For a start she's trans inclusive whereas they're prejudiced. Secondly, she actually fights for women's rights and gay rights, whereas they do nothing. She founded a party, she campaigns, they tweet.
It's International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia and we want to show that Canterbury has more to offer than just a problematic MP. It's a world heritage site twinned with Rheims for a start..... 🧵

The Labour MP's views on gender self-ID have been met with fierce opposition. Can her party find a compromise?
@RosieDuffield1
speaks to
@harrytlambert
.
Students at Kent Uni in Duffield's constituency have signed the statement. While her victory at the last election is far from attributable to just the student vote, losing it won't help her at all this year.
🚨 New:
@LabourStudents
groups at dozens of universities have released a joint statement condemning the national party "in the strongest possible terms" - after Rosie Duffield said Labour had dismissed claims of transphobia and antisemitism against her.
@UKLabour
And they are fine with the way that Every. Single. Time. She ducks scrutiny by blocking and locking, and by not facing her constituents and answering their questions.
This week Rosie Duffield has been having a laugh with Gl*nner and appearing on right-wing "news". If she'd been in Canterbury she would have seen hundreds of her constituents gather at a moment's notice to mourn. She would have heard their pain and anger but also their pride.
A memory from last year's Pride when our MP went on local radio and described trans self ID as "dressing up" and compared to drag. This is why we will be peacefully demonstrating on Sunday and saying Canterbury deserves better.
If you needed any proof that the Gender Critical arguments against a full conversion ban are a garbled mess of fallacy and cry bullying, then do watch Rosie Duffield's speech. This is supposed to be about banning practices that damage LGBTQ+ people's mental and physical health...
Never do they examine *why* they are on the same side as fascists. It's not an accident of birth, they don't coincidentally support the same football team, their moral compasses are in sync on a matter of bodily autonomy, biological essentialism, and therefore the patriarchy.
The Today programme covered Annelise Dodds' Guardian article outlining Labour's retreat on self-ID but Dodds wouldn't speak to them, so they got Rosie Duffield on instead and I bet they knew that would happen.
Absolutely zero scrutiny from
@Kent_Online
here, which we've come to expect. It's incredibly contentious to call her gender critical output as being "outspoken on womens rights" with absolutely no critique. If you don't understand an issue get someone to report on it who does.
@jk_rowling
@UKLabour
This is just factually incorrect. She has not stood in an election since Corbyn stood down, nor have her GC views faced any electoral test. Are you too lazy to look this up or just wilfully lying? Also - what does "hung out to dry" mean? Is it an 80k salary + expenses?
In her only interview ahead of Canterbury pride
@RosieDuffield1
has told me she’s staying away from Pride this weekend because she “wouldn’t be welcome”, she doesn’t “want to cause upset or cause problems for the police. She also said she has no regrets in speaking out for women.
The most you can ever expect in the aftermath of one of Duffield's episodes is a GB News presenter saying "You're not a bigot are you Rosie?" and she says "of course not" and that's that.
Probably should have restricted replies but feel free to use as a block list.
@UKLabour
@CanterburyCLP
these are your Duffield fans, she won't ever call them out or reign them in, will you?
Antoniazzi shaking her fist at the sky as she shouts at the toilet gods, meanwhile Duffield has polled the entire electorate about their views on toilet gods
#feminism
"I will use social media to promote myself and criticise my opponents but as soon as I, a holder of public office, am questioned I will pull down the shutters and say social media is not the place for that sort of thing".
@nicclesb
@UKLabour
She's created a feedback loop where she's blocked everyone remotely critical so she only gets weird groupies in her replies. Very healthy for a politician 🙄
