Today is one of those days where I want to leave the
#NHS
Families shouting at me for the 48hours wait to get upstairs. People in their 80s waiting 36 hrs on chairs. Suboptimal care due to the hospital being full.
This is not what I went to med school for.
So i’ve just looked at the 2024 ICM ST3 Self-Assessment Matrix…
Safe to say, I will not be getting an interview 😢
No prizes, no additional degrees, no nationally held leadership position (for 6/12).
I work so hard, but nothing that ticks any boxes. Should I even bother?!
Can’t really believe this tbh… been talking about dual accrediting before I even got my EM post…
Now just several years, more exams, more membership fees and I’ll one day be a consultant! 😂😅
Always nice to be told there’s “absolutely no point” in me being in theatre
This being the only
#EM
trainee on this rotation is getting pretty rough this week.
Fed up of people assuming I’m stupid and don’t care when I’ve done more reading that several anaesthetic trainees.
Today we got the keys to our first home 🏡
After a very stressful 2 weeks thanks to our abysmal solicitors, we are IN!!!
Now pass me the paintbrush! 🎨
@MattJFootball
💕
Right, I really am enjoying
#maternal
BUT my 1 criticism is the poor representation of A&E
There is no way that the acute med SHOs would be seeing a standby.
Emergency medicine is a great specialty in its own right. Please acknowledge us, because we work our absolute arses off.
And 6 months of
#anaesthetics
is finally over!🥳
There have been some ⬆️ many ⬇️ (mainly put downs as
#EM
trainee) but I have learnt lots and have been deemed airway competent
Happy for the experience, but very hopeful that the only rubbish thing about
#ICU
will be the rota 🤞🏻
Good luck to this cutie 🥰 super proud of you
@MattJFootball
- you’re gunna do amazingly well! Just remember I’ll have a pint waiting for you once you’re finished!!
#wifelyduties
#MedTwitter
and
#TASME21
peeps...
I really want to do a part-time distance learning PGCert in Medical Education (which I could maybe turn into a MSc if I end up loving it) - any recommendations of which Uni to go with?
#help
@TheBMA
report has been published. I really do encourage everyone who works in medicine to have a read of our findings and reflect on what we can do collectively to stop these experiences/behaviours from reoccurring
#sexisminmedicine
One of them perks of
#PEM
is that last night we managed to clear the department.
Not just the numbers waiting to be seen, THE DEPARTMENT.
Didn’t quite manage a snooze, but got some portfolio and general admin done.
Starting the weekend with a dent in the to-do list ✅
Went
#swimming
for the 1st time since the start of the pandemic. Only
#woman
in fast lane, so obviously the slower men would not let me overtake. They then spent 20min of the allocated time slot chatting at the shallow end and blocking me getting to pool edge.

Today we speak with

One of the worst weekends of my life has had a happy ending at least.
The love we have for this furry princess is nothing like either of us have felt before. So happy she is home 💕
Horrendous few days. Sorry for the lack of
@TheBlueRoomEFC
content
Little Jess had to have emergency surgery to remove a block in her intestine.
Thankfully she’s back home now, albeit a little banged up.
Dogs, man 😞
@roolbg
@CCWearmouth
My life would be vastly improved if I had a locker. I’d be able to fit in exercise much easier.. have space for healthy snacks.. spare clothes for when I get vomit/urine/blood on me...
I’ve been “putting this off” for 3 years, but I am now ready to start this journey as an
#ACCS
#EmergencyMedicine
#trainee
- last year wasn’t the big travelling honeymoon send off I planned, but I’m looking forward to finally “growing up”
I know it’s rubbish that we’re not going back to normal
But do you know what’s worse?
People being critically ill and dying.
Saw a few
#covid
positive patients over the weekend. This has never been over. Please be patient.
We are getting closer, but the
#NHS
is struggling.
It’s being called medicine’s

Today one of the nurses sent me home with scouse, beetroot and crusty bread which she’d even buttered.

Day one of
#anaesthetics
and I’ve already intubated 3 patients, including a child, 2 LMAs and a million cannulas (and it’s not even lunch time).
Ooh… I’m already having way too much fun 🤩
Another day pushing forwards with
@TheBMA
and the
#sexisminmedicine
campaign today.. involving me presenting in front of a (virtual) room of very important people
Went out for dinner with
@MattJFootball
and was given a *genuinely* interesting history lesson about the numbers that are appropriate for footy shirts.
In case you didn’t know a “7” is not allowed for a defender
Another talk regarding
@TheBMA
#sexisminmedicine
project completed for the South East Regional Council
Great discussion points - I genuinely could talk for hours about this. 40 min never seems long enough!
Thank you for having me 👍🏻
Fantastic talk from

about healthcare inequalities to finish off day 1
⭐️ Most deprived departments are serving the most deprived communities
⭐️ We need inclusive solutions
⭐️ We must be hyperalert to our own internal unconscious bis and call it out
I am so proud of my work-wife
@doctorbeckycox
for being so brave and telling her story.
Our whole campaign
@ScrubSurvivors
rests on a foundation of the anonymous experiences of survivors but to waive anonymity is hard and scary.
Well done Becky 👏🏼
Relatives of patients - please stop stealing the hospital’s hand gel. Us healthcare workers need it as we’re in contact with so many people every day (some who will be

positive)
I am astounded that I’ve been nominated, let alone shortlisted as a finalist for Merseyside Woman of the Year 🤩
I would love it if you could vote for me (and even more if you could vote once a day until 2nd June)
💗 We are proud to reveal these courageous and inspirational women who are making a difference in Merseyside as finalists in the Merseyside Women of the Year Awards 2023 💗… (1/2)
“The cauliflower cheese paradox” - a great way of explaining how companies support male and female workers differently (FYI women need nutrition and big portions too)
#GenderBiasConf
@medicalwomenuk
Of course the baby gets a temp the night before my
#ICM
interview 🙃
Running on fumes (and 4 hours of very broken sleep)
May the interviewers be nice and the questions be easy 🙏
Had a day of verbal abuse from patients, being intimidated by hospital staff and just generally wondering why do I bother doing what I do? I’m clever, hard-working and a nice person. I don’t deserve to be made to feel like I did today.
#endofmytether
Thank you to
@thegmc
for inviting me onto this impressive panel to talk about
#sexism
and
#sexualassault
in
#medicine
It’s a great step that platforms are being given to this issue
I’m hopeful that the traumas of the past and present can help us to learn & transform the future
2.5 weeks off!! 🥳 full of celebrating - wedding, mums 50th bday, minimoon! I’ve been looking forward to this and I can’t believe it’s here!

100 percent behind any healthcare worker striking to improve pay/conditions/retention of staff/patient safety
The government DOES NOT CARE about patients
It DOES NOT CARE about the
#NHS
It DOES NOT CARE about the staff that got us all through the pandemic.
We support the
#ambulancestrike
, paramedics and ambulance crew should be paid fairly and work in safe conditions. The pressures on ambulance services in the last few months have been appalling. They deserve better.
Genuine Q: How do people make work-life balance happen?
How do I say "no", or at least say "not right now" & wait until I have capacity?
How do I get rid of this constant feeling of not being enough?! Is this a medic thing? A woman thing? Or just a me thing?
#overwhelmed
Second speaking event of the week!
Send good vibes as I’ve only had 4 hours sleep, finishing work at 1am last night and having to set off to Nottingham at 6 😬 💤
Doing a locum, back in adult ED land.
Being spoken down to, assumed to not know what i’m on about and just general rudeness from specialties.
TAKE ME BACK TO PAEDS!
This was not worth the extra pennies.
Love this slide from Professor Barbara Phillips - as someone who wants to do ICM alongside EM I will agree that I am insane with a short attention span, but I am awesome as well 😂
#FICMSTB22
Really enjoyed the talk from

at
#RCEMasc
looking at evidence on airway management
Useful for me on my anaesthetic placement, but I do wonder how many
#EM
trainees actually get to manage the airways for critically ill patients??
It’s a skill I don’t want to lose!
Here I am in a bikini, with an alcoholic beverage in hand. I was on holiday, but if you needed CPR that day I still would have done it. Female doctors get enough grief on the daily, what I wear on my hard-earned days off (or any other day) should not concern you.
#MedBikini
Today I’m going to be talking alongside
@doctorbeckycox
and
@nizbuzz
on stage Theatre 4 at
#FS22
about our campaign
@ScrubSurvivors
(Never thought I’d end up talking at an national surgical conference about sexism and misogyny in healthcare)
Attending my first
@EMTAcommittee
meeting today, albeit virtually. Some great discussion and action points coming up.
Nights shifts and induction tomorrow meant the turnaround would’ve been too much to do f2f this time, but looking forward to getting involved 👍🏻
Today has been one of the best experiences and proudest days of my life. I enjoyed every single second of those 26.2 miles.
I just want to say thank you to every single person who donated to my
@age_uk
fundraising…
Spending my day off going through
@TheBMA
#everydaysexism
data.
It’s been an emotional rollercoaster so far... I’ve been angry, sad, hopeful and shocked within the space of 30 minutes
Oh wow 🤩 what a compliment! Thank you so much!
It has to be said that I’ve had a lot of help and support with the work I did alongside
@TheBMA
and there would be no
@ScrubSurvivors
without the wonderful
@doctorbeckycox
- collaboration is key!!
@ByChelcie
it’s been great to see your work lead to the
@TheBMA
pledge to end sexism in medicine and the fabulous work you’re doing with
@ScrubSurvivors
. You’re an amazing medical woman role model 👏🏽👏🏽
Still ploughing on with the Sexism in the NHS project. There is a lot of work going into it, in hope that when the time is right, the survey will be ready to go live!

My office for the day - giving a talk to
@FICMNews
about Sexism, Sexual harassment and Sexual assault in healthcare.
Talking all things
@ScrubSurvivors
I’ve been skeptical about “wellbeing” sessions at work.. but the balloon modelling session we had yesterday did put a smile on my face when I’d been feeling super anxious/low at work. Is it the solution to all the moral problems in the NHS? No, but it brings some joy to the day🌸
How am I spending my first day of annual leave?
Teaching at the med school 🙈
Love teaching, but I’m looking forward to the point when it’s part of the job I get paid for and don’t have to use my own time for…
My work-life balance is extremely one-sided
I think about this most days. Reducing hours, having a break to do something different...
Yes, we need more drs.
But we also need a flexible work plans and training schemes which allows us to have a life outside of work.
Our workload has intensified, we need more recovery
Our latest tracker survey
@TheBMA
showed a worrying trend in doctors planning to reduce their hours or leave the NHS after the pandemic.
The government responded that there are now more med students training - this will not help the immediate crisis.
After campaigning for only 10 months!
Change is coming and
@ScrubSurvivors
is right there at the forefront, shoulder to shoulder with this impressive array of individuals.
Collaboration is key as this is an issue that affects EVERYONE in healthcare 💪🏻
What I enjoyed most about
@jasonleitch
lecture at
#RCEMasc
wasn’t the interesting
#leadership
behaviours, the lessons learnt through the pandemic so far..
But how honestly and pragmatically he presented how the pandemic has gone for 🇬🇧 and 🏴 . Not perfect, but mainly positive
What an amazing key note speech from
@MeganReitz1
- I identified with so much of what you said
The barriers to speaking up and listening up are many but with more self-awareness and more self-confidence we can all start to over come them!

After getting home after a shift at 1.30am this morning and being up and out the door by 6am I am in DESPERATE need of coffee and all your energetic vibes 👌🏻
But we move 💪🏻
Early start for

staff on how to manage first disclosures and investigating

in the workplace.
Looking forward to hearing and learning from
