Last night I read about a hermit who lived in the woods for 27 yrs. An avid reader, read anything he could steal. Part of the book was him saying how much Ulysses sucks. Go into the woods of Maine for 27 years, talk to no one, come out, say 1st thing he says “Ulysses sucks.”

20 yrs ago, I started in on contemporary fiction after seeing Fight Club, then reading Chuck Palahniuk. He said Amy Hempel was real good so I got one of her books. I thought, fuck, how is it possible to be this good? Amy Hempel is the heavyweight champion of the world.
