@marcellstrbich We should limit the # & types of levies & begin restructuring local gov in Ohio. But we also need voters to stop saying yes on new levies. Until that happens, the leverage to get the structural change needed for real change won't exist.

Ohio began doing this sort of regulatory review under now Senator @JonHusted. A lot more can be done at both the federal & state level to leverage AI & improve government delivery of services & efficiency.

Honored to talk to @GivingReview about keeping an eye on NGOs that help craft administrative rules. See my report for @TheBuckeyeInst,
In 1st part of 2-part conversation with @GivingReview co-editor @mhartmannmke, @TheBuckeyeInst’s Greg R. Lawson (@BuckeyeInstGreg) talks about his recent report on rulemaking nongovernment organizations and how they can serve good purposes, but should operate transparently and be subject to the scrutiny of democratically elected policymakers … “To be fair, these organizations are not inherently bad organizations and I think that’s something I want to say at the very front end,” according to Lawson. “There’s a lot of utility to what these groups do and what they are. “A lot of people say, well, this is really negative report on them, and I think the way I’d rather characterize it is we want people to be careful, we want people to be aware, we want people to pay attention, and we want to have a greater degree of transparency,” Lawson says. “I would say that the average person, probably even the average legislator, knows very little about a lot of these organizations,” he says. We “need to know who these folks are. We need to know what people are doing when they go to conferences. We need to know what votes are on some of these models and things like that. We should just know. It’s not to say that it’s all some kind of underground bad thing, but if you don’t know, it can breed skepticism, it can breed concern, and we just can nip that in the bud if we have some more things and guidelines on the front side.”

Extremely pleased to hear @GovMikeDeWine is focusing on ensuring Ohio's higher education system is paid for outcomes. This mirrors the recommendations @Logan_Kolas & I made in a recent report for @TheBuckeyeInst

In the wake of last week's poor @NAEP_NCES scores, Ohio education leaders need to, "...renew our focus on educating students to give them the skills and critical thinking ability to be productive and contribute to progress in the real world."

Great piece by @PatrickTuohey in @KansasCityStar on the dangers of relying on NGO-inspired rules without legislative oversight. Refers to my report for @TheBuckeyeInst,

Important piece from @educationgadfly. As demographics change & less students are entering K-12 education, the issue of unused & underused buildings is only going to become bigger.
School closures are difficult and often unpopular, but when done right, they can lead to better outcomes for generations of students. A recent study identifies 22 underenrolled and underperforming schools in Ohio. Read more here:

@LadyBleuLady No. Not defund. Plenty of philanthropy & private $ can, & should, be used to find the arts. The question is spending tax $ at a time of a looming tighter budget & increased education & Medicaid/healthcare. Prioritization matters.

This is a good report from @GreaterOhio. Note that Ohio's GDP growth has fallen behind rapidly growing states like Georgia & NC. This reinforces that we need to create growth outside Central & Southwest Ohio or risk falling further behind long-term.

This @_RCEnergy is broadly right. Energy policy will be key to staying ahead of the AI race which is both an economic competition & a geopolitical one with China. With the coming of @intel & @anduriltech, Ohio needs to get this right!

Glad @ReadTheLion has highlighted the latest report on Higher Education reform from @TheBuckeyeInst . The headline is spot on: "Ohio must foster competition in higher ed, stop favoring four-year degrees"
