! Her enthusiasm for my humor PBs has me thinking, I just might be funny y’all.
Many thanks to the
#pbchat
mentorship (
@JustinRColon
) &
@devpetty
for helping me polish up the story that caught her eye.
My absurd humor PB, WHEN SHARKS FLY is a
#PBparty
finalist.
It means the world to me that the judges saw potential in it.
Sending love and light to the judges and
@MindyAlyseWeiss
who all go above and beyond for the
#kidlit
community. 💛
I’m always craving more writing kidlit humor content so I am teasing the idea of Kidlit HAHA Week — a week of daily blog posts dedicated to writing craft from various humor authors.
What do you think
#Kidlit
, yay or nay?
The stars have aligned for me today. I am in the right place at the right time in my (writing) journey and so are you!
#pbchat
Thank you
@devpetty
for getting my humor and believing in it enough to work with me. And thank you for making space for us
@JustinRColon
!
Taking a break from
#PBparty
entries today to work on the dedication and book jacket bio for my debut.
I’m celebrating every milestone and this one is giving me all the feels!
Started July off with a rejection. I choose to focus on the line that said “this is a solid picture book text” because it is a huge compliment. Still looking for that yes.
The rest of July can only go up from here...right?

This is why having the right agent for you matters. 🧵
I sent a manuscript to my agent that I didn't think worked as PB but I liked the concept enough to share it. I then quickly dismissed the possibility of ever doing anything with it. (1/3)
The
#PBparty
votes are in!
Your stories have kept me company every night for the past three weeks. Last night after our judge’s zoom, I didn’t know what to do.
Thank you for sharing your stories with us. I know good things are coming for all of you.
The
#PBParty
finalists will be announced on my website tomorrow. Wahooooo! I'll shout out the link on social media, too.
The judges & I had a 5 hour duke-it-out-for-final-spots Zoom. You didn't make it easy on us!
We expanded to 55 finalists & 25 in the Illustration Showcase.
I just laughed out loud at two
#PBparty
entries. One was SEL and the other was CHARACTER DRIVEN.
And with that…
I have finished reading the writer entries!
Making my way through the author-illustrator entries before tomorrow's judges' Zoom.
Wow, the response to this was a resounding YES!
Kidlit HAHA Week will be April 1st - 5th, 2024 to celebrate both April Fool’s Day and the start of National Humor Month.

I just reached 7K followers in this amazing

twitterverse and I am celebrating with a newbie PB GIVEAWAY!
If your new to writing fiction picture books (less than a year) comment with a gif below for a chance to win a FREE critique.
#Kidlit
, I thought I was polishing my manuscripts before, y’all it turns out I was only dusting!
So grateful for
@devpetty
’s awesome feedback.

My library only does curbside for two hours each morning while I am at work. What is a PB writer to do?
Go into work late, of course!
(Disclaimer: I was responsible & let work know I had an errand. 🙃)

Just hit send on my

I can’t thank
@devpetty
enough for her fabulous guidance. She is seriously the best. (and so is
@JustinRColon
) Feeling all the feels!
For this
#LimerickSunday
I present to you my unofficial
#Fallwritingfrenzy
entry.
“My muscles are sore,” Seymour moans
As he sits in a tub made of stones.
In the hot tub, he fries,
Until old Seymour dies,
And all that is left are his bones.
#Kidlit
, I just designed a webinar that is going to 🤯.
If you keep getting form rejections from agents/editors that say they didn’t “fall in love” with your manuscript, you won’t want to miss this.
Which is not only a disservice to my creativity but to the children who will one day (in 2025) laugh while reading my books. Thanks,
@agentstefanie
! (3/3)
Are you ready for
#KidlitHaHa
Week Day 3?
Create chaos with
@JustinRColon
in his post, CHAOS IN COMEDY: MISHAPS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND MISCHIEF FOR MAXIMUM MAYHEM.
But my agent agreed that the concept was strong and today we discussed a way (with a few edits) to make it work. Which makes my creative heart VERY happy.
If I didn't feel so comfortable with my agent, I definitely would not have shared it. (2/3)
Just finished my first
#pb
draft of 2020. A silly little image in my head that I told to go away.
“That’s not a picture book,” I said.
Well folks, it is indeed a picture book.

Ya’ll, I am grateful to all the wonderful folks who made
#fallwritingfrenzy
happen. I am so proud of my entry, The Bones. Can’t wait to work with
@candice_marleyc
! Now which MS to pick. 🤔
Feel like you know a lot about publishing a picture book but also nothing at all? (submission, contracts, etc.)
Me too! So I am sharing all the behind the scenes of my publishing journey in a newsletter.
Check it out and come publish a book with me!
I am inspired and uplifted by the wave of support from the supportive
#kidlit
community today. Because of you I am ready to tackle this revision. I am grateful to be connected with all of you! ❤️
I’ve seen a few
#kidlit
writers post about their fear of sounding weird or too much like a fan in their
#PBrisingstars
application. I want to give you permission to throw caution to the wind and be yourself. [A thread 🧵1/4]
Great day of
#PBchat
mentorship progress. Orientation zoom with the other mentees and got my first edit notes. My mind is blown 🤯! There is WORK to be done.
Received a champagne rejection today that used the words “very talented creator” and I’m going to ride this high for a little while.

Y’all, IT STARTED WITH A P by myself and Andrew Joyner officially has a cover! (That no one can see yet.)🤩
AND there is other IT STARTED WITH A P news that I can’t share yet. 🤐
Today is the day! The
#PBchat
mentee showcase is live and I can’t believe how fast the past three months went. Working with
@devpetty
has been a dream and it’s crazy how much
@JustinRColon
does for the program.
Best of luck to all the mentees!
I thought of a
#pb
title while falling asleep. I did not write it down. So you know what that means…
All I can remember is R________ of Love.
#kidlit
, Any ideas what in the world the R word was meant to be?
Had a wonderful first
#pbchat
mentor meet-up with
@devpetty
today. (I love her vibe and approach to the industry) I’m excited to make these manuscripts shine.
(And I wrote a new rough draft 💪🏼)
Please give a warm welcome to
#PBParty
's new judges--both were PBParty finalists:
Author
@BrittanyPomales
who has a hysterical PB under contract. I can't wait for it to be published!
Author/illustrator
@Scarbrough_Art
whose manuscripts and amazing illustrations make me smile.

His plan was foiled
The fruit was spoiled
He should have stolen it canned

Each year I add a new ornament that symbolizes something important.
This year’s ornament is a crown to represent my

showcase entry. The mentorship was a big moment in 2021 so it earned a spot on the tree.

Hey
#Kidlit
! I'm in the mood to read some spooky PBs so...it's time for an impromptu CRITIQUE GIVEAWAY! Comment with a spooky GIF about your PB before midnight (PST) on 10/13 and I'll pick a few that catch my eye.

Week Day 4.
Write (and revise) humor that stands out with
@clairetatters
in her post, WRITING AND EDITING HUMOR.
I am in the mood to read some fun alliteration and since I handed in the final edits for my debut, I’m hosting a PB Critique GIVEAWAY!! 🎉
If your MS features alliteration drop a gif and I’ll choose two
#kidlit
winners on Friday, 7/21.
It’s time for a new PB idea journal. The one I started for
#Storystorm
, is now all full and 7 ideas have become manuscripts. I can’t wait to see what this notebook brings!
After binge watching MasterChef, I sat down to write my
#Halloweensie
entry and all I could think about was a creepy...gory...pasta dish.
So I present to you my entry… MonsterChef. Bone apetit!
Both a good and a wicked witch

#Kidlit
, while we wait for

winners tomorrow, I wanted to share my entry. Can you guess which feeling I got from the wheel of feels?
(Since it’s judged anonymously I waited to share to avoid any Frenzies from spying it on their TL)
