In a rare postgame address to the media, Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades called tonight's officiating an "embarrassment to the Big 12" and said he would fight for his athletic program. Plans to reach out to the conference.
I don't really care what happens the rest of the year. Scott Drew should not only be Big 12 Coach of the Year, but should be in the running for National Coach of the Year. This will be five straight wins for Baylor, and its third straight Monday road win after playing Saturday.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said Baylor should put up a statue of Jalen Pitre, given all he meant to the program and what he's doing in the NFL now. "One of my favorite people," McGuire called him.
How many Waco-bred basketball players can claim both a state basketball championship and a national championship? I can only think of one. La Vega's Juicy Landrum living the dream.
The Bears are the first Big 12 champ since Kansas in 2008. The first state of Texas champ since 1966 Texas Western.And just the second men's team to win an NCAA title at BU, along with 2004 tennis.
Baylor student Reagan Whitaker won $100K in tuition from Dr Pepper. She was money with that chest pass, throwing the footballs into the giant DP bottle.
"Shout out to Baylor University, I'm bringing it home, baby!" she said on the telecast.
To the Mulkey disciples here in Waco filling up my inbox, thanks for informing me what is and isn't newsworthy.
In the most Texan way possible, allow me to just say, bless your hearts.
Abram Smith went full SPIN CYCLE and bamboozled the Texas defense on his way to a huge 32-yard touchdown run. Bears push lead to 31-21 with 7:59 to go.
FINAL: Baylor 36, UCF 35.
One of the more incredible turn of events you'll ever witness. Bears score 29 unanswered to win, improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12. They'll return home to face Texas Tech next week.
I'd hold up my cell phone and take video from the press box for you Baylor fans, if it wasn't some sort of broadcast rights violation. Will you pay my fine? 😄
All the tributes were heartfelt and moving. But when they performed the flag presentation and played Taps, hoo-boy, it got a little dusty up in this mug.
Collen, on playing OU Tuesday:
"Yeah, I’ve noticed in the last three men’s home games that it’s been a sellout at least the day before the game. I think it would mean a lot to these players. ... So, we’d love, love, love to see a huge crowd at Ferrell Center on Tuesday."
I literally was just looking up Terrel Bernard's stats, thinking, "He's really had a nice game." And then he delivers a third down sack. For Bernard, that's 8 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 TFLs.
Glad that Baylor is making the overdue honor of retiring Brittney Griner’s jersey. She’s not only the best BU basketball player, but one of the top athletes overall.
Richard Reese becomes just the second Bear to take two kicks back for TDs in the same game, joining Trestan Ebner.
Reese is the only guy to do it on back-to-back kicks. He has 189 yards of returns on two attempts.
Sad news for the Midway ISD family as head boys soccer coach Patrick Posey lost his battle with cancer this morning. "He exemplified everything that was good about all of us," Midway AD Brad Shelton said.
Baylor wins it, 3-2. First win over the Longhorns since 2001, snapping a 35-match streak. Also the highest-ranked win in school history. (Can't get higher than No. 1). Baylor beat Wisconsin when the Badgers were No. 2 earlier this year. Bears also 12-0 at home.
Give it up for those BU seniors, who have left an incredible legacy for the program: Tara Wulf, Shelly Stafford, Hannah Fluegel, Nicole Thomas, Braya Hunt and Gia Milana.
Is it just me, or do those trading "Baylor" and "Bears" chants (or "Green" and "Gold," which they did earlier) suck every bit of life out of a stadium?
Retire them.
Well, that's pretty cool. The Naismith family donating James Naismith's Bible to Baylor's Faith & Sport Institute for permanent display.
Love Jimmy Naismith and his beautiful invention.
Congratulations to Mitch Thompson and
@mccbaseball1
on winning the NJCAA title. Second title in program history, to go with the 1983 title.
What a performance by Logan Henderson on the mound, and the Highlanders all season long.
Kind of ridiculous that Baylor's Andy Thomas wasn't the Big 12 Player of the Week. And yet he was National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. Go figure. Thomas led Big 12 in average, total bases, HRs and RBIs for the week.
Shows you how dumb some of these awards are.
Davion Mitchell became the third Top 10 pick in Baylor basketball history, following Vinnie Johnson (No. 7 in 1979, Seattle Supersonics) and Ekpe Udoh (No. 6 in 2010, Golden State Warriors).
Ja'Kobe Walter was one of the two players, along with RayJ Dennis, who was tasked with doing the postgame press conference. He broke down in tears talking about the bond on this team and how hard he wanted to play for them. Say what you want, but the guy really, really cared.
Because of some conflicts tomorrow, the Friday lunch crew met today instead. We opted for Mi Casita, because why not?
I can estimate that customer traffic appeared 50% above normal, and a group of Baylor students seemed delighted to be sitting at the “Scott Booth.”
LeRoy Coleman was a high school teammate of "Mean" Joe Greene and the high school head coach of LaDainian Tomlinson, and yet his greatest achievement was his genial, loving nature. He never met a stranger.
Rest in peace, Coach.
Today is my 24th anniversary with
@WacoTribSports
. Tomorrow is my 49th birthday. I only mention it because it hit me that should I still be in this position this time next year, I'll have spent half my life at the Trib, a quarter of a century. I should get a medal or hazard pay.
The Baylor fans still here at McLane gleefully cheer when the Texas score is announced. Gonna be a fun reception for the Longhorns when they come to Waco later this year.
I don’t mind saying I play favorites when it comes to my favorite area high school football player. Nice job by ol’Cooper Cherry, picking up his first career interception tonight. No. 38 in your Midway program, No. 1 in our hearts. 😁 🏈 🇺🇸
This is not an insult to TCU — can they really do better than Garry Patterson? He won at a level like nobody else there. Yes, they had backslidden. But this feels like when Texas and Mack Brown parted ways. Be careful what you wish for, Frogs.
Scott Drew said that he'll meet with Yves Missi and Ja'Kobe Walter in the coming days and said they'll make the best decision for themselves and their family when it comes to the NBA.
Re: The Washington Post profile of Kim Mulkey. Well-written, well-researched. Also not the least bit surprising or revealing if you've known, covered or followed Kim for a while.
She holds a grudge? Tell me something I don't know.
It was another lively, fun
@TXSportsHOF
ceremony. Congrats to all eight inductees, including this guy
@RGIII
-- I think I first interviewed him after a track meet his freshman year at Cove. I thought, "This kid is so poised. How in the world is he 14?"
(He's still got it).
Toughness marked this 2018-19 Lady Bear team, from start to finish. They won an alley fight, without their toughest fighter. Maybe the most impressive win of Mulkey's three titles, in terms of the title game adversity.
Mack Rhoades has shown that he's not afraid to go off the radar for his coaching hires. What does it mean for Baylor women's basketball? Who knows, but I wouldn't immediately dismiss Nicki Collen just because you hadn't heard of her before 10 minutes ago.
And there's the first TD of the game, and naturally it comes on defense. The ball is tipped, and returned all the way back by Al Walcott, 96 yards. HUGE play for the Bears.
Aranda on going for it on 4th down late: "It’s just part of our DNA. Our kids would expect nothing less. If you have a philosophy, the idea is you’re going to live that out."
