In a little life news, I have moved to rural Yorkshire (for no reason other than “I work mostly from home and why the hell not”) and I am in LOVE already.
I have two masters degrees from top British unis, including one that won a prestigious award. I’ve lived here for years.
My visa is up in two years and I won’t qualify under these rules.
I feel sick to my stomach right now. After everything I’ve done, it’s still not enough.
We’re increasing the minimum earnings threshold for skilled workers by 48% to £38,700, encouraging businesses to look to British talent first and invest in their workforce.
And likely I might lose my current visa because of this.
Which means that I will either need to leave and come back again, starting my path to permanent residency over FOR THE FOURTH TIME.
Or I finally give up and say fine, you win. I can’t do this anymore.
@TheMikeStrutter
Not so fun fact: the UK already ranks almost dead last amongst countries when it comes to the rights of foreign spouses of citizens. With these announcements I can basically guarantee it’ll drop to dead last. World-beating, as always!
@BBCNews
So...an increase to go places where you virtually have to take a plane, and a discount on places where a plane should absolutely be the last option?
Got it.

@greenbenali
Dan I genuinely don’t know what to do right now. It’s not even law yet and this is the lowest I’ve felt since before I finally made it back. I *finally* made it back, I’ve done nothing but work to make things better for us since 2018…and I come back from a lovely day to this.
Doing the math for an applicant and their spouse for a five year work visa. The government fees alone are £14,285 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Just a good reminder that there is NO reason for this extortionate behaviour on the part of the British government.
@stevepalmerrgj
@TheMikeStrutter
Family reunification rights ≠ non-citizen rights, my friend!
But what would I know, I just work in immigration law after all 🤷♀️
Anyways. I’ve been up for long enough. One more pic of the day (with the SWIMMING in JUNGLE WATERFALLS POOLS). Goodnight to the migrants and lawyers and allies of the world 🌺
An apt reminder of how frequent this is: the Home Office makes a blatantly wrong decision and only media coverage gets it overturned. How many more bad decisions are there that don’t get this treatment? And why are we in a system where going to The Guardian is needed? 🙃
Great news - Home Office has overturned their decision & the Afghan youth orchestra will now be coming to UK and playing their women’s day concert at
@southbankcentre
then Bham,, Liverpool & Manchester. . Pls go see them & show your support for Afghan women & girls 🙏
@GreenPartyWomen
As a woman and member of the Green Party, this message does not represent my views or - as was astoundingly obvious at spring conference, as you are only too aware - the views of the vast majority of members.

Hi, non-EU immigrant here. Our daily lives are impacted quite negatively by the government, I’m glad you’re so safe that you see this as “politics” but please recognize your privilege and don’t tell others to not be our allies, especially when we already have so few. Thanks xx
(Provisionally)
I got a distinction on my dissertation, with the best feedback I've ever received on any academic anything ever, between undergrad and now both masters'. I don't know the exact number yet but I'm hopeful it's higher than 70, based on the feedback.
😊😊😊😊
@Botanygeek
Former housekeeper here: those are all helpful, as well as keep the counters tidy if they’re doing daily cleanings. And ofc tips are always appreciated, it’s a gross job for minimum wage. The number of bloody sheets, condoms on floors, etc etc I had to deal with, 😩
I am not your enemy. My Italian manager is not your enemy. My Indian, Nigerian, Jamaican, and Lithuanian teammates are not your enemy. The Ghanaian man I’ve befriended at my local Subway is not your enemy. My former Nepalese flatmates are not your enemy.
Got into a small argument yesterday with a Greek woman I had just met - I said I loved Athens (her hometown) and she said no, it is terrible and she hates visiting….because there are too many immigrants. She is an immigrant in Britain, but apparently that’s fine.😑😑
The university system in Canada and Australia will thank Braverman, at least!
The second paragraph is also very concerning: the UK is already the 55/56 rich countries when it comes to family reunification and now they’re trying to make it dead last. World winning indeed.
Ffs, could they not give it a rest for even a couple of days? These plans would see even more families ripped apart. The minimum income requirement needs scrapping not increasing and for it to be easier for people to live, study and work in the UK.
What I can't get over is that its 35 students.
The Home Office and government hates immigrants - especially brown Muslims - so much that it is willing to be so openly, unabashedly cruel in order to prevent thirty. five. people from coming to a country of 66 million.
Deeply disappointing to hear - on top of everything - that Afghans who received Scholarships from the UK government to study in the UK this year have now been told they will not be granted visas due to "administration issues". Surely someone can sort this out?
I work in *very corporate* immigration aka my clients are about as privileged as one can be and still be a migrant. And my inbox is still so depressing every morning, with people’s lives being yanked around because they aren’t seen as people by their employer or the UK.
When I was teaching ESL to Chinese kids last year, I'd put the vocab into the chat area so they could translate words. The vocab the Chinese company gave me btw, I didn't make my own lessons. Anyways, I just remembered that this happened one day.
😬
I don’t make direct eye contact because I have an eyesight issue. Someone called me rude today in a team meeting. No, I am not gonna be called rude because of a physical disability, stop this ableism bullshit. I said that as best I could in a professional setting but ffs.
All right, now that I’m on the train I may as well do the whole “🚨 personal news!” thing:
Just two months after leaving London for lovely Glasgow….I’m headed right back down, as I’ve been hired (with probation ofc) by an immigration consultancy firm. 🥰🥰
Going into my muted Remainers group chat cuz I’m going to get drinks with them tomorrow and wanted to check the address, and they’re all talking about how much they miss Theresa May, and now frankly I don’t really want to get drinks with them anymore.
@IanDunt
2012 is also the year that Theresa May implemented her horribly unwelcoming immigration policies, paving the way for the hostile environment. It’s crucial that be remembered whenever that opening ceremony’s message is discussed.
@ZJAyres
My orange-sized one was "food poisoning", despite me insisting I did in fact know what food poisoning felt like and that wasn't it. And then came the NHS wait time! So sorry yours went ignored for so long 🫤
I’ve been seeing this quite a bit, often in relation to vaccine passports, and I don’t recognize the “this country isn’t a papers please society” characterization. It very much is, and if it’s not for you, that’s probably bc your whiteness + class status serve as your papers.
Predictably, there are many responses to this tweet asking her why she would ever want to live in the US.
Do not ever respond to an immigrant with that. Trust me, immigrants are very, very aware of the horrors of a state. That doesn't change the fact that that is their home.
I just remembered that on Saturday night we took an Uber home. I asked the driver how his night was, he said fine, that was the end of that, and soon after getting home Uber sent my friend an email saying “please don’t harass the drivers”.
🥲🥲🥲
This government is so ghoulish.
As a reminder, the UK is already one of if not the most expensive visa system in the West, and immigrants pay taxes in addition to the already ridiculous IHS.
All this does is further exploit and extort a population whose fault this is not.
😡
How are the govt going to fund paying public sector workers more?
'The fee for migrants applying for visas and accessing the NHS will go up - that will raise over £1bn,' Rishi Sunak explains.
📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602
Good news came over the lunch break.
As always, grateful I’ve managed to get my life back on track after years of limbo, while still constantly thinking about those between 2012-2021 who deserved so much better.
Right, enough people have retweeted this into my feed that I now feel the need to say stop
Yes what is happening is had. Can this point be made without claiming cuts havent been done to most other visa routes, causing untold harm to countless people, every sector, etc? Also yes.
THREAD: What is happening in UK universities is astonishing. Right now about quarter of universities are laying off staff. Almost all universities expect to make a loss this year. And the entire thing is happening in an effort to deceive the population about migration statistics.
Academic writing is far too concerned with impressing the inner circle and not concerned enough with making their findings accessible and easy to digest for the general public. You're leaving that job to journalists, who barely understand you either and often spin your work.
Got here a bit too late for good lighting but the alarm is set to get into photography first thing tomorrow, because oh my GOD.
Definitely the best birthday since Bali three years ago 😍😍😍
@marobec
@KirstieMAllsopp
Ignoring that immigration and asylum are two different things, “paid appropriate fees” means it’s not free healthcare, and also the UK literally ranks 51/52 of rich countries for family reunification rights. You shouldn’t brag about the abusive system they experienced.
Today is dissertation submission day. It’s not 100% where I wish it was because I took on too ambitious of a project for the time I had once exams ended. But I cannot wait to use the data I’ve gathered for Medium posts and share with y’all what I learned. It’s fascinating stuff.
Well, there went my good mood in a hurry.
My current role would not be qualified for this. I now have two years to ensure my employer thinks I’m of value for minimum.
I feel actually sick to my stomach right now looking at that number for spouse visas.
My god.
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
It’s been a LOT these last few years but damn it, I am FINALLY on the path towards permanent residency. Finally as of today, my life in the UK actually starts to mean something according to this government.
Grr to them but oof I am pleased.
Good morning all,
As many of you know, I have been working with the Green Party to create more welcoming immigration stances in England and Wales.
We have recently and finally created a Twitter space -
@gpmigration
- to get this message out.
So please give us a follow! 😊
My take, as always during the heat waves, is that “yes, most other places I’ve lived have been hotter but the UK is miserable because the houses are shit but also oh my god stop pretending the houses keep the cold out in the winter, the houses are just shit”.
I am a non-EU migrant doing a second master's at LSE, in immigration policy. Theresa May's policies destroyed my previous life, I now devote everything to fighting the system. Please let me know of volunteering or work that could use someone like me! 💙🙏
🚨Day One of my new job as an Analyst at Deloitte! I’m so excited to keep helping people with their immigration journeys via a global firm which will allow me to work with people based all over the world. 🥰
I am deeply saddened by the terrible shipwreck off the coast of Calabria.
The resulting loss of life of innocent migrants is a tragedy.
All together, we must redouble our efforts on the Pact on Migration & Asylum and on the Action Plan on the Central Mediterranean.
Fun story: when Macau and Hong Kong were handed back to China, Portugal gave citizenship to ppl from Macau. Britain did NOT do that and also pled with Lisbon to not because they were convinced all the Macanese would use EU FoM to move to England 🙃
UK home secretary Priti Patel rang Ireland's justice minister over UK concerns on Ukraine refugees getting to Britain from Ireland
Ms McEntee “pointed out” to Ms Patel that Ireland was part of the EU-wide response to the crisis.
I have never nor will ever understand the cognitive dissonance required to have this ridiculously common view. Nobody calls temporary migrant workers expats. The length of stay has nothing to do with the use of the terms “expat” and “immigrant.” Nothing.
@Joannechocolat
@ledredman
I think that ex-pat correctly means someone living abroad temporarily (often for work) whereas immigrant means someone who has moved for good.
The problem is that some people who have moved for good don't like to identify as an "immigrant" and choose to call themselves expats.
oh my god, I got distinction for the entire degree!!! I wasn't expecting that!
Ok, well then, first and foremost obviously I have to thank immigration Twitter. This would absolutely not have happened had it not been for so, so many of you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Won a hard-fought visa application today, over a submission from months ago that should have been straight-forward and quick. The anxiety the Home Office put on the applicant, her family, and the business (and me!) was quite unnecessary. A very happy phone call, at least. 🙏
What an abysmal comment yet it also perfectly encapsulates the immigration conversation in this country.
Sure would be nice if someday, maybe during my great-great grandkids' time, immigrants were acknowledged as people and not mere economic pawns.
Note 2015 is also the last time the Labour and Green leaderships were far apart, and they’re much farther apart now. Further, Labour WILL win this election and by a landslide.
Vote. Green. Remind Labour - the new government - that this country wants and needs genuine change.
In 2015
@TheGreenParty
got over one million votes.
In 2024 we'll be standing in every single seat in England & Wales.
Every vote is a vote to tackle inequality, the climate crisis & a vote for proportional representation.
It's the perfect time to:
972 days of isolation and loneliness, limbo in every single way, are finally coming to an end. Or well, switching to a different limbo anyways. But it’s a limbo that actually has a sliver of hope so I’ll take this win today.
See you soon, London. I can’t believe it.
God I hate this argument, and the Left needs to stop making it. Immigrants are humans who have agency. If they want to leave their birth countries they should be able to leave, if they want to stay they can stay.
This is anti-immigration rhetoric wrapped in liberalism.
Government boast it is opening up visas to the world’s top graduates. But many originally come from third world countries. Why is Britain asset stripping poor countries like this?
Everywhere sucks, pass it on.
That they’re going to crack down on visa extensions is so wrong, going after admissions is one thing but ruining the lives of people who are trying to integrate is just 😠
It will see every sector lost staff. I work in corporate immigration, I really cannot emphasize how many businesses will be harmed by this.
Hell, I work in law at a fancy City corporation and with all the hope in the world my salary won't be £38,700 when my visa extension is up.
Work event tonight. Otherwise known “one of these days I will actually remember to buy heels to wear to fancy shindigs instead of five year old ankle boots that don’t even fit anymore and were never meant for fancy events anyways”.
The fun thing about finally getting back to this island is that I can finally meet the people I’ve been talking to for years 🥰🥰🥰
@marthaunplugged
Whose next 😁
She is also THE architect of the hostile environment, which has devastated the lives of countless people whose only ‘wrongdoing’ was having the audacity of not being white British citizens. It’s disheartening how often this is forgotten…or more to the point, ignored.
A reminder that it was Theresa May who insisted on ending free movement once and for all - which set the UK on a path towards a series of botched Brexit deals outside the single market wrecking the UK economy.
