Have you watched as your parents both developed dementia/Alzheimer’s at the same time, and their ensuing rapid mental and physical decline? And handled their care and the legal/medical system alone, with no other family nearby? Have you had to place your parents into memory care, geriatric psych wards and then hospice, only to sit with them as they went through the dying process, as they died four months apart? That was 2024 for them. And myself. It’s awful. The grief is overwhelming.

@libsoftiktok The entire process is medieval at best. I’ve spent months trying to get my dad’s pension to help my mom. She passed in December 2024. I just got the notice that she’s been approved for it today.

@elonmusk Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to deal with this antiquated system first hand regarding my dad’s passing and getting his pension benefits for mom. After the initial phone call, retirement paperwork is mailed via USPS ten days to three weeks afterwards. Then after returning said paperwork, you’re lucky if you get a response within a month. Because of mom’s dementia dx, I had to prove she was unable to handle her financial affairs, which necessitated a dx letter from her MD, plus other paperwork. Sent all that out 11/14/2024. Arrived 11/16/2024 where it then sat in the mail room (I was told) for 27 days. Assigned to a rep 12/13/2024. Mom passed 12/24/2024. Alerted OPM via their website 01/04/2025 of this. Didn’t hear anything until I called them yesterday. Today I received a letter to her from OPM that I would now be her financial guardian, and she would receive her first payment next month. Unreal. I do want to stress though, that the employees I have spoken with were professional and helpful. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for them to handle all this literal paperwork in such an inefficient system. There has to be a better way.

@MilaLovesJoe 33, will be 34 years in October! My parents were married 68 years last January. Both passed within 4 months of each other last year.
