Rachmaninov Prelude Op. 23 No. 2: majestic, extrovert, bursting with energy. It reminds me of his song “Spring Waters”, with its unstoppable, effervescent drive. The middle section shows Rachmaninov’s amazing multi-layered writing – like 1.5 pianos playing simultaneously 🥰

Rachmaninov’s Prelude Op. 23/3 (from the middle). A wonderfully story-telling prelude, which could have easily been an Etude-Tableau. The ghostly polyphony towards the end is exquisite – and Rachmaninov derives everything in this piece from the same 5-note motif!

I discovered Rachmaninov’s song “Daisies” today (!) and also his own arrangement for piano solo.

This is from Schumann’s Arabesque, written in 1839, on a beautiful 1836 Erard.
