Davey Martinez is about to begin his 7th season as the Nats manager. But this spring, he was more vocal & hands-on than ever.
On Martinez the coach & teacher, & the relationships he's building with the top prospects he hopes to one day manage in the bigs.

Audio and video of Lane Thomas' ejection. He literally doesn't say a word before he's tossed by home plate umpire Emil Jimenez, who is a second-year ump.
Jayson Werth says his favorite Nats moment is when they won the World Series, even if he wasn't on the team, because it was the culmination of everything he envisioned and worked for when he signed here.
Three years ago, the Nats had Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon, Trea Turner, Juan Soto, Ryan Zimmerman and Sean Doolittle on the roster.
After tonight, only Strasburg, Soto and Zimmerman may remain.
Sean Doolittle and his wife, Eireann Dolan, have rooted their lives in D.C. since arriving in 2017. And after being named Washingtonians of the Year, they look forward to staying committed to the city.
"I think we’re here to stay. You’re stuck with us.”
Juan Soto just met with the media. On his first time facing Max Scherzer this weekend: “It’s gonna be fun. … He’s going to try to strike me out. And I’m going to try not to strike out because I know that’s what he wants.”
Daylen Lile is out of the hospital and back in West Palm Beach. He’s sore, but all tests were negative and he’s been diagnosed with a lower back contusion.
Davey Martinez said Lile is very lucky and this was the best-case scenario.
I guess if Max Scherzer starts on Thursday, he'll continue the streak of either him or Stephen Strasburg starting in every Nationals Opening Day game since 2012. 🤷♂️
Juan Soto when asked about his future after winning the Home Run Derby: "Right now, I'm not even thinking about it. I'm a champion and I will be a champion for the Nationals."
Davey Martinez said Luis García has been getting work in at second base in anticipation of C.J. Abrams' arrival. Sounds like Abrams will take over SS duties when he comes up to the majors and García will slide over to 2B.
Very small detail (and idk why or how I noticed it), but the
#Nats
’ four division championship banners at Nationals Park are now all blue instead of red and white.
If you're around my age, growing up a baseball fan in D.C. was weird. Then came the Nats and Ryan Zimmerman.

@granthpaulsen
had it first)
The Nats are over .500 for the first time in three years. The energy in the clubhouse is different.
Kyle Finnegan: "It's the mentality that nobody sees us coming. We're kind of lurking in the shadows. We know how good we are. And maybe the league will start to take notice."
Jesse Winker, who has also been booed alot in San Diego, just launched a two-run home run to give the Nats a 4-2 lead.
The Nats exploded in the duguout. And that's where they kept the celebration, off the field.
Max immediately jumps to defend Zimmerman when asked if he thought about the possibility of tonight being his last game in front of
#Nats
Park crowd: “I don’t think this his last game. Only you think this is his last game.”

The Nationals will play what they’re calling “On Deck: Nationals Futures Game” on March 26 instead of a major league exhibition game. It will be played at 12:05 p.m. at Nats Park and feature top prospects against the major league club.
What an awesome idea.
Yan Gomes is making his return to D.C. tonight. He was just chatting with Davey Martinez around the batting cage at Nats Park. The two exchanged a big hug.
Final: The Nats mop the Marlins with a 7-2 win. They are back to .500 for the first time since July 2, 2021 (not including 1-1 on opening weekend). The boys are playing good ball.

Cade Cavalli just struck out his 10th batter and completed seven innings for the second straight start in Rochester.
He's starting to heat up at Triple-A.
Jacob Young just walked into the clubhouse and Josiah Gray was the first to walk up to him, introduce himself and congratulate him.
Pretty cool moment.
James Wood has been activated off the 7-day injured list and Dylan Crews has been added to the roster at Triple-A Rochester.
The Nats' top two prospects are sharing an outfield once again.
Final: Nats 4, Phillies 3. Lineup scored all 4 runs before making an out. Williams tossed 6 scoreless. Bullpen hung on. That's 7-of-9 series won (5 vs. contenders) and 19-10 since July 21. This was a good day for the organization.
Davey Martinez confirmed the plan is for CJ Abrams to be the Nats’ everyday shortstop for the rest of the season and Luis García to move over to second base when he returns.
Some personal news: I’m getting married today!
One tweet is not enough to express my love and joy. Neither is a single blog post. But I tried my best here. On love and baseball:
Before his debut tonight, Joey Meneses said: "In all of the years that I've played in the minor leagues coming up, I've been very consistent with my offense at the plate. And I think that's the reason why I'm here, and hopefully that continues up here.”
It did.
This
@richiemartinjr
interview is why you shouldn’t “feel sorry” for the
#Orioles
or those of us who cover the team. These guys play their tails off every day and have a great attitude about the game. We’re lucky to have them.
Aníbal Sánchez announced his retirement on Instagram. World Series champion with the Nats in 2019. Returned to pitch 14 games last year. Pitched 7.2 no-hit innings in Game 1 of the NLCS against the Cardinals.
Josiah Gray was visibly emotional upon learning he was named an All-Star for the first time.
On a major achievement for the young pitcher and the organization that started its rebuild with him.
Josiah Gray's night is done after six scoreless innings and nine strikeouts.
His ERA now stands at 2.93, the first time it's dipped below 3.00 in his major league career.
Watching Jesse Winker's home run on the broadcast, a field mic caught him talking to the Nats bench on his way into the dugout saying, in parts, "Let's win a series. (Expletive) all that."
Winning the series would put the Nats ahead of the Padres in a Wild Card spot.
Notes after back in the Nats clubhouse for the first time since the World Series:
*Juan Soto has Ryan Zimmerman's old locker, in between Nelson Cruz and Josh Bell
*Sean Doolittle has his old locker

Not the right context. This is not what Davey Martinez was suggesting at all. He was refering to Keibert Ruiz having a conversation with Jurickson Profar.
Full quote: "He confronted him. That's all it really took. For me, it was it was a good way to send the message."
Davey Martinez suggests the Nationals hit Jurickson Profar on purpose
Washington took exception to Profar celebrating a walk-off hit in the direction of the Nationals' dugout

Must be reserved for those pitchers who earn the win in their MLB debuts with the Nats.
An 18-win improvement pace at the big leagues and the fastest-rising farm system in the sport are tangible evidence of the Nats' progress.
Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez knew the challenge when they started it two years ago. Now their success has been rewarded with new contracts.
