Allies back the US base on Diego Garcia but don’t back the UK’s claim to sovereignty over the Chagos Islands– Starmer has to square that circle and square the Trump administration too writes @BlogWyatt for @LSEpoliticsblog

Under all circumstances, along with other European countries, the UK could back Ukraine, even if it chooses to walk away from an unjust and unworkable deal, suggests @LawDavF Good explainer all round

This is the sort of foreign policy that will make it increasingly difficult for the UK and other allies of the US around the world to maintain cordial relations with Trump.
Donald Trump: “We’re going to have Gaza. We don't have to buy. There’s nothing to buy...We're going to take it, we're going to hold it, we're going to cherish it, we're going to get it going eventually... it can be a diamond...”

@AdamJSchwarz Might be of interest Accepting that an argument can be made the other way, both international law and realpolitik provide a more than decent case for the UK's deal with Mauritius - yet the government has lost the war of the political narrative.

Here's how it looks. The rental for the 99-year lease on Diego Garcia will be £90m per year, with some frontloading, and inflation-linking in later years It's a payment to secure a key asset for our US ally, in the expectation of continued + invaluable US➡️UK defence cooperation

The case for the UK deal (if not the rumoured price) is that UK/US allies around the world back the Diego Garcia base but not the UK's title to it The deal fixes that But if Trump does not like it he should be brought on board for further negotiations with Mauritius
'I think it was the only sensible strategy that was available.' Former UK Ambassador to the US Lord Darroch defends the government's deal to hand the Chagos Islands over to Mauritius. #PoliticsHub 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

Excellent analysis from @jamiewrit reminding us that European trade and investment in the US gives Europe huge leverage to counter Trump's extremism (but don't forget - sanity is always around the corner and Europe/US are natural partners and allies)
