My wife was keen to see AS ABOVE SO BELOW as she's reading a book on the Paris catacombs. I was surprised at the mostly negative reviews. The location alone is so creepy and the idea of being thousands of feet below Paris is well realised. Some great jump scares too. I liked it.

Here's a full scene from one of the slasher movies I made with my friends and family before I got into film school. It was shot in the video store I used to work in (2nd best job I've ever had) and we designed a special prop drill for the finale. Good times. 😄

Tobe Hooper would have been 79 today. I only met him once but he was a huge part of my life and his films have left a huge impact on me. To this day, I can’t think of a movie more nightmarish than THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. He was a horror legend and changed cinema forever. RIP

If any of you horror genre fans have missed THE RUINS (2008) it comes highly recommended. It was shot in Queensland, Australia and based on Scott Smith’s novel. A superior example of the nature strikes back genre, it has moments that are deeply chilling and disturbing. I loved it

I was working with a young film student the other day who told me he was a huge fan of director Fred Schepisi, my old boss, and wanted to meet him one day.
I made a call and by 4pm that afternoon he was sitting in front of Fred having a 3 hour masterclass about filmmaking. 🙂

Just watched HELL HOUSE LLC. What a nifty little found footage movie. It built tension really nicely and there was a palpable sense of dread in the house, the basement but especially opening the door to 2C. Some genuine chills here. That was a great midnight movie. Nice work.

HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH. I read the novelisation before I saw the film when I was 14, so I imagined my own version of the movie before I saw the real thing. It didn’t disappoint and Tom Atkins makes everything he is in better by his presence. Can’t wait for the 4K blu.

Most of the men in Valentine are vile. Except one…I wanted a good guy, at least once. When Katie Hiegl bumps into locker room guy he checks she is okay being alone and wishes her good luck for the exams next day. He behaves like a gentleman.

40 years ago Psycho II opened. I was in my first year of high school & learned the director Richard Franklin had attended the same school. He showed it was possible to get from Melbourne, Australia to Hwood and inspired me to do the same. He later became a good friend & mentor.♥️

Silvio Horta and I were 24 and 26 respectively when we made Urban Legend together. We loved seeing the film come to life and made a great team. Not a day has passed since he tragically took his life that I haven't thought of him. I love you and miss you very much, old friend.❤️

1/2 - Back in the ‘80s, when I was a teenager, I directed 3 full length, shot on video, slasher films. Produced during school holidays with my friends they were an excuse to introduce random characters then violently murder them with special fx we learned from Tom Savini’s books.

My future wife, then girlfriend, was my P.A. on Valentine. The exec producer cynically interviewed her thinking she would be shopping while I was working. She’d previously been P.A. to a much bigger director than me.

Today is a great day. Just read the first draft of Act 1 of a project I’ve been developing with a talented and passionate writer. Script grabbed me immediately. Fresh ideas, lots of laughs and scares, well drawn characters that I care about.
Feeling very good about this one.

Happy birthday, John Carpenter’s THE FOG. It was the very first horror film I saw as a kid and it began my lifelong love of horror movies. It’s still one of the best.
My folks took me to the lighthouse in Point Reyes on my first trip to California as a kid. I’ll never forget it.
John Carpenter's THE FOG was released on this day, in 1980.
With shots like these, it still remains one of the best looking and atmospheric horror movies out there in my humble opinion.

’s brilliant remake of WAGES OF FEAR again last night. It’s been awhile since I last saw it. The bluray restoration is really beautiful. I can’t imagine how hard some of the imagery must have been to put on film. If you’ve not seen this before, fix that.
