💟 February is Oesophageal cancer awareness month Read the 🆕 blog and check out 7️⃣ of the most important studies published in @BJSurgery and @BjsOpen from the past year "The BJS Academy, alongside BJS & BJS Open, feel it is an important part of our mission to contribute to these awareness months. So much research is published with enthusiasm, but then resides solely within the pages of a journal (or latterly, as a lonely PDF on a server). It is important to ensure that new information is shared with people who might find it useful." - @wannabehawkeye #Cancer #Awareness

Short-term outcomes from the ‘Watch and Wait’ (WoW) study: prospective cohort study ➡️ This prospective multicentre observational study included patients who, following neoadjuvant treatment for rectal cancer, obtained a clinical complete response and were followed in a watch-and-wait programme. Two hundred and eleven patients were included, and this article presents short-term outcomes at 6 months. Thirty-three patients (16%) developed local regrowth, and 31 patients were salvaged with curative intent. 👏👏👏Daniel Rydbeck, Najia Azhar, Lennart Blomqvist, Abbas Chabok, Joakim Folkesson, Anders Gerdin, Linda Hermus, Peter Matthiessen, @Annamartling, Per J Nilsson, @evaangenete #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery @me4_so @BJSAcademy @BJSurgery @young_bjs @juliomayol @JJEarnshaw @OUPMedicine #colorectalsurgery #colorectalcancer @FightCRC @ACPGBI @ACPGBI_EduTrain @Dukes_Club @ESCP_studies @escp_tweets @YouESCP

Preoperative stereotactic radiotherapy to prevent pancreatic fistula in high-risk patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy (FIBROPANC): prospective multicentre phase II single-arm trial ➡️ The FIBROPANC study investigated the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of preoperative stereotactic radiotherapy on the pancreatic neck transection margin to reduce postoperative pancreatic fistula in high-risk patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy - A single fraction of high-dose stereotactic body radiotherapy increased parenchymal firmness and fibrosis, but - did not reduce the postoperative pancreatic fistula rate Work by Leonoor V Wismans, Tessa E Hendriks, J Annelie Suurmeijer, Joost J Nuyttens, Anna M Bruynzeel, Martijn P Intven, Lydi M van Driel, Roel Haen, Roeland F de Wilde, Bas Groot Koerkamp, Olivier R Busch, Jaap Stoker, Joanne Verheij, Arantza Farina, Onno J de Boer, Michail Doukas, Ignace H de Hingh, Daan J Lips, Erwin van der Harst, Geertjan van Tienhoven, Casper H van Eijck, Marc G Besselink, on behalf of the Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Group #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery @RCPSGTrainees @aecirujanos @SEIQuirurgica @iss_sic #MedicalTechniques @BJSAcademy @young_bjs @BJSOpen @des_winter @evanscolorectal @robhinchliffe1 @bplwijn @MalinASund @nfmkok @TejedorPat @paulo_sutt @PVaughanShaw @JJEarnshaw @juliomayol @ksoreide #some4hpb #some4tpl @DPCG_official @pancreatitis_nl @PancreasClub #PancreasClub2023 #PancreaticCancer #Pancreatitis #HCC @PanCAN #PanCANawareness @EurPancClub @P_C_E_ @dice_europe #PancreaticCancer #cholangiocarcinoma

A man can die but once, but the surgical community have used different metrics for postoperative fatalities ➡️ In this registry-based study, the authors refined a statistical framework using declining hazards. Applying this to elective colorectal cancer surgery, a data-driven postoperative fatality window at 24 days was established, after which the death rate transitioned to a stable rate. 👏👏👏Estimation of the postoperative fatality window in colorectal cancer surgery by Martin Rutegård, Peter Matthiessen, Jörgen Rutegård, Markku M Haapamäki, Johan Svensson #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery @BJSAcademy @BJSurgery @young_bjs @juliomayol @JJEarnshaw @OUPMedicine #colorectalsurgery #colorectalcancer @FightCRC @ACPGBI @ACPGBI_EduTrain @Dukes_Club @ESCP_studies @escp_tweets @YouESCP

Ovarian cancer risk reduction by salpingectomy during non-gynaecological surgery: scoping review ➡️ This study explores the feasibility, patient interest and cost-effectiveness of opportunistic salpingectomy during non-gynaecological surgeries as a preventive measure for ovarian cancer. Thirteen included studies highlight its low implementation rates but demonstrate high success rates and patient willingness, particularly in procedures like bariatric surgery and cholecystectomies. Despite time constraints, the procedure shows promise in reducing ovarian cancer incidence and mortality rate, advocating for its consideration in non-gynaecological surgical settings. 👏👏👏Charlotte Fisch, Malou E Gelderblom, Rosella P M G Hermens, Philip R de Reuver, Simon W Nienhuijs, Diederik M Somford, Joanne A de Hullu, Jurgen M J Piek #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery @BJSAcademy @BJSurgery @young_bjs @juliomayol @JJEarnshaw @OUPMedicine

Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis: 30-year analysis on surgical evolution and patient outcome ➡️ This study reviews the evolution of proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis surgery and its outcomes over three decades at the University Hospitals of Leuven. Findings indicate an increase in laparoscopic procedures and delayed ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, leading to a significant decrease in anastomotic leakage rates over time, while anastomotic leakage was identified as a key risk factor for pouch failure. 👏👏👏Gabriele Bislenghi, @antonio_luberto, Wout De Coster, Leen van Langenhoven, Albert Wolthuis, Marc Ferrante, @SeverineVermei1, André D’Hoore #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery #colorectalsurgery #colorectalcancer @FightCRC #Crohn #colitis #IBD @ACPGBI @ACPGBI_EduTrain @Dukes_Club @ESCP_studies @escp_tweets @YouESCP

Gastric partitioning versus gastrojejunostomy for gastric outlet obstruction due to unresectable gastric cancer: randomized clinical trial ➡️ In this RCT that included 52 patients, patients who underwent gastric partitioning were more able to ingest a normal diet after the procedure (96.3% versus 72%, P = 0.022) with similar postoperative complications and survival. Gastric partitioning should be considered as the primary option for the treatment of malignant gastric outlet obstruction. 👏👏👏Marcus Fernando Kodama Pertille Ramos, Marina Alessandra Pereira, André Roncon Dias, Osmar Kenji Yagi, @DrZilberstein, Ulysses Ribeiro-Junior #SoMe4Surgery #MedTwitter #SurgEd #Surgery @BJSAcademy @BJSurgery @young_bjs @juliomayol @JJEarnshaw @OUPMedicine #some4UGI #uppergi #esophagealcancer #gastriccancer @Augishealth @roux_group @T4UGIS @CanadianGastric
