Walt Simonson draws like this after a life in comics. Very few have remained as vital and innovative so long. Eisner and Kubert come to mind. His IDW Ragnarok is a labour of love and the art reflects that. Amazing.

It’s late. I’ve had some wine. I feel the need to share that I HATE CGC slabbed comics. Looking at the dodgy grading that gets done, the agents hogging places in queues at shows, all to lock away a comic forever to be unread. Just makes no sense. IMO.

I wonder how many people currently remember Deathblow Wolverine by Aaron Weisenfeld and Richard Bennett. Both ex Continuity artists, they evolved quickly in the 90s and worked for Jim Lee. Weisenfeld evolved before our eyes on Team 7 then came back with this tremendous book 1/2

Mike Mignola’s short run on Hulk with Mantlo and Talaoc was followed By Byrne. This is from 310 which preceded Mignola. Amazing work by Bret Blevins with Al Williamson inks. Doing an on model Sal Buscema Hulk but doing his own thing. SO good.

Eduardo Risso is east to take for granted. He does long unbroken runs of seemingly effortless art. His art is as accessible as Azzarello’s writing isn’t making it a tricky sell at times. But the pictures speak for themselves. His Sgt Rock mini with Bruce Campbell is gorgeous

What magic struck Wally Wood? What was he channelling? I have a personal preference for Krigstein and Kurtzman and I think that comes from my not being able to connect Wood’s work to a human. It’s hyper real and my mind can’t comprehend what’s behind it, let alone aspire to it

Jerry Paris is a UK illustrator who didn't do many comics but these two left an indelible thumbprint on my psyche. A couple of game magazine covers by him too. There's a big Flint Henry (not Henry Flint) energy to it that I love. I wish he'd done more
