Favorite Ka lines a thread 🧵 . Whenever I listen to Brownsville Ka I think about this writing teacher I had who used to constantly hit me in the head with “Economy of words” theory. When I became a writing teacher myself the hardest shit to teach was how to revise “down”.

When rappers make a flip or nod to a historic artist and aspect of the culture it shows they a student of the genre. It can also deepen the experience of the listener of its a reference they know, or circle back to check out the original piece. billy woods got a few nice ones.

Your words have more punch when you get rid of excess “flowery” language. GZA said, “Too many songs, weak rhymes that's mad long. Make it brief son: half short, twice strong”, so it’s no surprise that the first time Ka caught my attention was on a GZA joint.

The pictures Ka paints with those words are maximal tho, which is why he can be hard to listen to at times ironically. He’ll hit you with something linguistically and emotionally heavy, but then do the same thing right after that, then again and again…

This woods bar captures why these diss tracks feel more intense & personal than in the past. Rappers had to see each other, events, award shows etc…which increased the risk and likelihood someone was gonna “see” you for some sh1t you said. Not as much an inevitability now.
