I loved Murder, She Wrote in which a middle aged woman without a husband or children lived a really full, exciting life and kept being invited to things even though people dropped dead at every house party she attended. RIP wonderful Angela Lansbury.

I use an excellent Pakistani cook in London to stock up on pullao, shami kebabs,chapli kebabs, old school chicken shashlik, baingan ka bharta, qeema etc. He charges by the hour, is incredibly reasonable & v v good. He could do with more work, please beep me if it interests you.

In my basic Italian class, I'm on the verb vendere, to sell. The example provided is "ha venduto l'anima al diavolo". (He sold his soul to the devil). I still don't know how to book a hotel room in the language but I'm relieved I can now cast aspersions on people's character.

About the last thing anyone needs right now is to hear Hum Dekhenge by Coke Studio. Firstly, it's a romanticised, liberal cliche which lost any bite it had decades ago, and secondly, there's no need to celebrate it being appropriated by Coke, the cornerstone of capitalism.

I don't at all believe in encouraging people to write books. I believe in discouraging them. It's really hard, you probably aren't going to be any good and there's a high chance you won't be very successful. If you still want to do it though, bring it.

Do stop asking how the minar mob violence happened and look to your state for the answer - look at gender segregation, look at social norms in public life, look at the state of and the use of public spaces. This is all horrifying but none of it is a mystery.

My brother the anthropologist gave a talk about his book last night, about what cricket means to us as a nation and how it situates us in the world and it was moving and exciting and saddening and still so hopeful, like a great sports movie. I loved it.
