UVA administrators are trying to gaslight you into believing these students were violent and disruptive. I read the statements. They are lying. Jim Ryan is lying. I saw with my own eyes. Please stand up for these students.
To make myself abundantly clear: I’ve been at camp with these students and faculty for 5 days. In that time they have: danced, sang, made art, shared food, studied for finals. There are maybe 20 kids, 4 faculty, and 2 legal observers currently facing a small army of riot cops
In this clip Geeta mentions a VSP cop who crossed the police boundary to take her water and stomp on it in hopes of eliciting a reaction and further escalation. I was there, I saw this happen. He was also the only one in our area with a hand on his gun at all times.
Students want to talk to the Dean and she’s refusing. I’m right next to her hearing this conversation. She is reiterating that they had multiple chances, though it’s important to note that *UVA* escalated what was a peaceful situation here
I’m sorry but the AHA “You don’t scare me—I’m a historian” merch post while historians are being brutalized by cops called on them by their own universities could be a Veep episode
I have been very thankful for faculty in my department who have showed up (physically and online) this past week. I know that both
@oliviacpaschal
and I felt safer and braver yesterday knowing many of our professors were there with us. Historians ftw ❤️
Members of the History faculty

condemn yesterday's police action and demand an honest explanation from the university. Proud to co-sign this open letter with 34 colleagues and counting.
“Pepper spray us yourselves next time,” says one of the many students/faculty who just left in disgust after faculty senate refused to condemn police violence on grounds last Saturday.
Who is in charge here?? No sign of Tim Longo, Jim Ryan—Acampura is reiterating that she doesn’t have the power to call off cops (presumably she could call Jim Ryan?). Does Virginia State police run this university?
Faculty are still pleading with Acampura (and a Vice Provost whose name I don’t know) to call Jim Ryan: “he needs to show face and take accountability for this”
This has come up repeatedly for us at UVA. Myself & lots of grad students who’ve been here for years noted that this is the most community we’ve ever felt at this school.
My time at Winterthur (sadly) comes to a close at the end of this month, but I’m so excited to be starting a new adventure as a consulting curator at Historic Rock Ford and the John J. Snyder Gallery of Early Lancaster Decorative Arts in Lancaster, PA.
In light of this... illuminating town hall, please see this statement from graduate and undergraduate
@UVA_History
students. I'm immensely proud of this and of the students who have signed on so far.
I planned to live tweet this faculty senate meeting but 20 min in I genuinely do not think I have the mental and emotional energy. These guys are absolute clowns. I’m the immortal words of Taylor Swift “you don’t get to tell me you feel bad.”
One student is reading a statement written by an undergraduate who was arrested and banned from grounds, who says VSP hit her, kneeled on her, and removed her goggles to mace her directly in the eyes.
Extremely important thread. Myself and many of my colleagues have experienced harassment and worse working FOH. What will managers/directors/board members do to ensure staff and visitors are safe? (sadly I have no doubt that their answer will be increased policing)
Senators seemed worried that just anyone can walk into commencement. One senator said people would not feel unsafe if snipers were on the roof, but UVA should notify people if they will be there, so people present at May 4th don't get 'emotionally triggered'
I struggle to find adequate words to convey the tremendous impact Linda Eaton had on my life and career. Few people have had greater influence on the study and appreciation of American Decorative Arts, and fewer have used that influence to mentor generations of students.
LOTS of thoughts after reading this, first and foremost that it's actually not necessary for most (probably all) museums with early American collections to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on new acquisitions in order to engage deeply w/slavery
UCWVA-UVA has won! After our Cut the Checks campaign put pressure on UVA's executive administration to fix administrative staffing problems (the cause of chronic late and missing payments to graduate workers), (1/4)
Students are begging to talk to Dean Acampura if she calls of the cops. She’s still refusing. She says they need to leave, there’s no assisting them further
I move to Charlottesville in a little less than 48 hours and I’m here to say on this, my 7th big, out of state move in 24 short years of life, that it doesn’t get any easier. In fact, it gets significantly worse!
I've spent the past 3+ years trying to convince museums with early American collections that they don't need to *buy new stuff* to be able to research and interpret how material culture and dec arts are tied to enslavement.
Today I submitted something that was supposed to be finished 6mos ago, so I am here to tell you that if you have been putting off That One Thing, you can do it! And the people waiting for That One Thing will likely be much more understanding than you think! It's COVID after all.

There’s been an active shooter at large on grounds for over an hour. Thinking of everyone here at UVA, especially my students. I hope they’re all safe :(
Such a special morning (with beautiful weather!) celebrating

it’s the first day of 19th grade (!) and also my 25th birthday so if anyone needs any spare nervous energy/existential dread I’ll gladly pass some in your direction🤪😵💫
“Young voters do not look at our politics and see any good guys. They see a dying empire led by bad people.” Sounds like they have a pretty good read on the situation in that case
if you’re watching me take selfies in the immaculate lighting at Grit instead of writing any of the three papers I have due in the next 5 days, no you’re not
nothing in this world like doing a really great job on something and having a man tell you that someone should “knock you down a few pegs” for it instead of like, just saying congratulations
Jim Ryan and Tim Longo unleashed the violence of the state on our community and they continue to unjustly target and punish students to cover up their lies. It does not have to be this way. It should not be this way.
For anyone feeling as flabbergasted and gaslit and exasperated as I am right now: I hope you find ways to take care of yourselves and your people this weekend ♥️ solidarity forever
I may have just moved to Charlottesville four days ago, but I’m excited to be back in Wilmington (already!) co-teaching the 4-week material culture intensive summer course to our newest class of Winterthur/UD American Material Culture MA students.
Just left a wonderful discussion w/ colleagues at the Baltimore Museum of Art who are working to research and reinterpret their early American dec arts collections to better engage w/enslavement, race, unfreedom, etc.
since so many reply guys are pissed about my use of the word drawn let’s fucking agree that guns are OUT and guns shouldn’t be on a college campus to begin with
First page starting strong! In his 1793 account book, Lancaster cabinetmaker Calvin Cooper records “cash laid out for Charles’s freedom.” Charles was probably an apprentice, & this was the suit of clothes to which he was entitled at the end of his apprenticeship.
Great to see colleagues and friends in Williamsburg this weekend for the 75th annual

Antiques Forum. Such an inspiring few days spent thinking about craft, design, and collecting, makers and users, and the power in objects that keeps us coming back each year!
Members of the UVa Apartheid Divest Coalition Boycott their previously scheduled meeting with University President Jim Ryan, instead reading a condemnatory statement before UVa administrators scurried off.
And until museums are willing to really look at, understand, and interpret the objects they already have, spending $$$ on pieces like the Drake jar discussed in this article is a symbolic band-aid, a way to make white institutions feel good about themselves, their collecting, etc
Really wonderful to speak

this morning as part of the long-awaited Mount Vernon Symposium, “Under my Vine & Fig Tree”: Gardens and Landscapes in the Age of Washington and Now. (Thanks to my friend Tom Savage for this picture of me enjoying the Potomac!)
skipped town for the past week with my sis to drive south for some very important holiday business™️ (aka following sparkly fruit man around) and it was worth every second 💖🥝🍒🍉

It’s my first time drinking INSIDE at a BAR since March of 2020 and they played ALLSTAR BY SMASH MOUTH so I genuinely believe that everything’s gonna be okay
Anyway, now seems like a great time to plug what has got to be the most important intervention in our field (maybe ever) the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive. Founded by two amazing scholars and mentors, Drs Tiffany Momon and Torren Gatson:
Extending this thought to also capture educators who would rather manufacture a wildly dangerous hypothetical about their students “maybe having secret guns” at the encampment to avoid condemning the very real guns that were actually there and called in by admin
