Age of Emergency is out in the US (and soon elsewhere). It’s a book about how colonial violence comes home and what it means to live with warfare that is simultaneously distant and present, unsettling and unstoppable, existential and futile.

@MLedgerLomas @DouthatNYT Yes, there's a tension between Trump's juvenile cartographic maximalism and the (to me, amenable) political reality of what a union electorate might look like. But the fin-de-siecle Anglo-Saxonism papers over some of that.

@MLedgerLomas @DouthatNYT How would you feel about a selective union with the Pacific Coast, the Northeast, and parts of the Upper Midwest? I'm interested

One of my all-time great intellectual experiences was the Holocaust historiography seminar he co-taught with Jan Gross. To say nothing of working through The Human Motor at an impressionable age. RIP.

@Willofd55 @samhaselby Well, I don't think conspicuously throwing him under the bus would have been a smart play but she absolutely needed a good answer to the question: "How would you be different?" And to say it a lot.

@JamesChappel There's stiff competition for worst NYT opinion columnist but she's held the crown for a while, IMO. Anti-"woke" mush of Chat GPT quality twice a week.

@daniel_dsj2110 OK. My sense, or my provocation, is that writing the history of empire (and chronicling its harms) no longer has much to gain from the definitions and genealogies of political theory. At the very least, the returns are diminishing.

@daniel_dsj2110 Look forward to reading that. But if liberalism is illiberalism, it is everything and nothing—not a very useful category.

@daniel_dsj2110 Sure—I just find the critiques more persuasive. There is a conceptual inflation around “liberal imperialism” that occludes a lot of substantive illiberalism.
