What a surreal day! Arriving on site at 3am 31/12/2022 and spending a grueling but rewarding 14hrs closely monitoring 'Thor'.
It's been an absolute honour and a privilege to be involved from the start and be part of such an amazing
@BDMLR
team.
Thor the Walrus - A thread↓🧵
Wherever he may end up, I hope he has the safest travels and feeds well!
We have loved having him visit Scarborough for a short time to recuperate after his travels to the Netherlands, France and Hampshire but I sincerely hope that he continues North!
Good luck Thor❤️
Finally the time came! After hours of him teasing us (I thought he was going to rest again) I was so excited and relieved when he finally made his way back to sea! We sprinted to the end of the harbour where we watched him surface a few times before disappearing into the darkness
Despite the crowds, he seemed to remain relatively unphased and comfortable although, a couple of times once the tide went out or he fancied a change, he would move from the bumpy cobbles & waddle over to the flatter concrete🤣
Here's a video of him 'sliding' to get comfortable.
*TW*
Something I NEVER thought I would share on twitter but Charlie has really inspired me today! I'm on holiday in Portugal at the moment and for the first time in 10 years I wore a costume without shorts and showed my SH scars on both legs💔 I'm very very VERY proud of myself!!
For almost 15 yrs, I’ve avoided any swimwear that shows off the top of my legs as I’ve been so self conscious of my self harm scars…
It hasn’t been easy - but I’ve slowly come to accept them as part of who I am & as terrifying as it was, today this happened… 😀
Originally from the Arctic, 'Thor' the Walrus hauled out on the Harbour slipway at Scarborough Friday night where he remained for c18hrs to rest and regain his energy. Estimated to be around 8yrs old, he's quite young for a Walrus and may only just be maturing.
As Medics, we also devoted a large amount of our time to the public. I really enjoyed talking and educating 100's upon 100's of the interested, respectful members of the public. Some were so kind to offer drinks, food and encouraging words to keep us going in the rain and cold!🥰
This day couldn't have gone so smoothly without all the incredible help & responses from so many people! Medics and HQ at

,
@SEALIFEScarboro
, Yorkshire Seal Group,

, Operation Seabird, Scarborough Council, the Harbour Master & so many more!!
I'm still so excited to have seen the White-throated Sparrow earlier today at Barcombe that I couldn't resist sharing a second/better photo. What a pretty little bird!!
Had my best ever views of Bittern yesterday at
@RSPBTitchwell
I was surprised when this lovely male walked out within feet of us! got a few people on it, then carried on birding. Got word he was still showing spectacularly so had to go back for seconds when the light was better!
There are no words good enough to truly describe how I'm feeling today. I spent the whole afternoon watching the 27s in Busta Voe and it was beyond incredible!!!!
Now, c161km away from Scarborough, Thor has resided in Northumberland for the foreseeable. BDMLR are aware and our amazing team of medics are on site ensuring his welfare. Its brilliant news he has swam so far North and hopefully keeps going once he's ready to move on!

If you can spare something to help out our area it would be greatly appreciated, it goes a long way and helps out tremendously with so many rescues!❤️
Puck, the Grey Seal pup that sadly got attacked by a dog at Spurn on the 23rd January has been released!
Incredible to watch him bound back to the sea after going through such a rough time. He has come such a long way and recovered brilliantly from his injuries.
Good luck Puck!
I haven't been taking many pictures lately, but finally going to post some that I do manage - starting with this stunning Stonechat on a frosty morning at Pitsford Res the other day.
Had the pleasure of watching some Long-Tailed Tits nest building. I was calmly stood at a good distance away letting them collect materials to stuff in their fluffy and cosy dome nest.
I was stood listening to the reel of this Grasshopper Warbler on my walk this morning when it flicked out of deep cover to sing louder.
A surreal experience to see one so well, let alone to photograph one.
#Lockdownbirding
Incredibly honoured to have this week's photo of the week with my favourite Black-browed Albatross shot after waiting hours in Thursday's windy snow storms.
Thankyou
@BirdGuides
! 🥰
After a very tough, wet day, we finally laid eyes on this bright, zesty bird🍋
An American warbler I've always dreamed of seeing and it certainly didn't disappoint, even after waiting hours this afternoon in the rain for it to finally show
Yellow Warbler - Hoswick, Shetland.
It's with the heaviest & most broken heart that I share my gorgeous Alfie made his peaceful journey across the rainbow bridge yesterday for his next adventure🌈💔
Sharing 17 precious years, growing up with my little man was truly the highest honour & made life beyond special💙
There's many perks when birding by bike, you can see & hear so much more as you ride along but it is usually more often to see them from your bike, not on it.
I shared my bike with a Wheatear!
#LowCarbonBirding
Red-flanked bluetail at Chalk bank, only the 2nd one I've seen but felt as if it was the first time, a beautiful little bird that just takes my breath away. (quite literally when you're biking over the breach)
#Spurnbirds
Golden Oriole still showing beautifully this evening despite the rain storm brewing in the background. Still popped straight back out with a huge caterpillar once the rain passed.
#Spurnbirds
Incredible to reunite with the
@Bempton_Cliffs
Black-browed Albatross today for the 3rd year running.
Felt as if I was seeing him for the first time again as I watched him soar around the cliffs below, but to have him perch right beneath a small group of us was beyond special!
Another shot of the Bittern yesterday showing beautifully at
@rspbtitchwell
.
Still feeling overjoyed after having such incredible views of such a marvellous bird!
The Lerwick White's Thrush showed astonishingly well this afternoon! By far the best bird I have EVER seen (and I don't say that often or lightly) just loved watching it feed low under the bushes as it did its distinctive and bouncy wiggle😍
Lovely to see this stunning Long-tailed Duck so close and definitely worth laying facedown in the cold, wet grass at the edge of a Loch for a while🤣
📍Fetlar, Shetland.
SHETLAND!
On the ferry ready to sail but hopefully not a day too late & the Myrtles stay!🤞🏻
Been excitedly waiting for months to experience Shetland with all the wildlife & birding opportunities it has to offer, including the possibility of fulfilling my life long dream of Orca!!
Spent a couple of hours at Long Nab this afternoon watching the incredible Eastern Olivaceous Warbler.
It showed beautifully as it fed in the Gully, then flitted over towards us in the long grass/shrubs and briefly popped out just ft away from me before continuing its circuit.
After 4 years of relentlessly trying and dipping, I've finally seen Lesser spotted Woodpeckers!! & what a joy it was to watch/hear them drumming, calling and fleeting between treetops😍
Some more shots of the beautiful Wryneck from this evening. A very special experience as it seemed to be just as interested in us as we were with it.
#Spurnbirds
This radiant Redstart spent most of the day hanging around Sykes's Field. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her dart about flycatching and flicking her blazing red tail.
#Spurnbirds
Incredible day at Spurn as usual with many amazing species, but the real star is this Wryneck (and another in the hand). Always dreamed of seeing one this well and being able to photograph one. I'm truly in awe at these beautiful birds.
#Spurnbirds
Fabulous ringing session down in Northants today which really took my mind of things & so chuffed that I got to ring my first ever Tawny Owl😍 (5F) isn't she stunning?!?
151 birds processed (125 new and 26 retraps) of 13 beautiful woodland species.
Finally caught up with the Merlin that has been occasionally visiting canal scrape.
#spurnbirds
Such an amazing experience to see one so well and close, I'm used to them whizzing past at such a speed that it's difficult to get a good look.
This beautiful Puffin returned from a successful fishing trip with a beak full of sizeable Sandeels. Briefly landed by me on Skokholm 2 weeks ago before darting into it's burrow to feed it's Puffling.
White-throated Sparrow at Barcombe.
It's an overwhelming feeling to finally get out, see an amazing bird and catch up with some familiar faces.
A beautiful bird I've always wanted to see and a massive bonus to hear it singing!
Black-browed albatross at Bempton late morning.
I've always dreamt of seeing an Albatross, never mind in the UK! & I'll certainly never forget the feeling of when it first came cruising round the cliff into view, such a surreal experience.
Greedily went back for seconds to see the Yellow Warbler in Hoswick, Shetland today. The little bundle of sunshine was showing beautifully while feeding in what seemed like the only sheltered spot on the island!
This stunning Lapland Bunting was a personal highlight for me today, as I've never seen one on deck before.
A great addition to the
@spurnbirdobs
total for the Inter-Peninsular Bird race! 129 species seen across 6 teams, a fantastic effort!
No birding or wildlife for me for a while...
I've managed to dodge it for the last 2 years, until now.. so I'm feeling very sorry for myself and quite ill.
Pictures of your wildlife encounters or your beautiful dogs to help me through isolation would be highly appreciated🥰😍
Had the most amazing experience with these Great Crested Grebes today. The pair returned a couple of days ago to my local nature reserve for yet another breeding season.
I've enjoyed watching this pair for years and today was the first time I witnessed their courtship dance.
I'm still taken aback after yesterday's incredible trip with
@YCNature
. 13+ Minke Whales, with many remarkably close to the boat. I've dreamt of a day like that for years, just pure happiness while watching my favourite animals.
Thank you so much

&

The last 2 months have been rough & I haven't been able to go birding half as much as usual therefore it was extremely refreshing to get out around Kilnsea on Saturday evening. No better way to cheer yourself up than watching a Wryneck and a Red-breasted Flycatcher!
#Spurnbirds
After a tour of the triangle, dropping into the Canal and Sykes' field, the mobile Bittern flew straight by us before flying back north towards long bank marsh again. (a lovely addition to the caravan list too)
#Spurnbirds
@BirdGuides
The only word that comes to mind is WOW - W̲estern O̲livaceous W̲arbler!!!
First for Britain & showed beautifully as it fed despite the horrid conditions on Whalsay, Shetland.
̲
̲Less than a month on from my first Eastern, it was interesting to see the differences in behaviour.
All my efforts of seawatching today finally paid off!! Unfortunately, no Orca which was the main goal but I found this bloody gorgeous HUMPBACK WHALE in Haroldswick Bay, Unst, Shetland about an hour ago!!! What a beauty, I'm sooooo happy😍
Red-rumped Swallow frantically feeding around Kilnsea yesterday evening with the occasional rest on the wires.
Having our daily walk discussing the topic of a Red-rumped swallow flying south the next day when
@SBO_Jason
picks one up flying past us, you just couldn't make it up!!
I've found it very difficult recently to find the motivation to get out birding and taking photographs as often as I used to. Before a whole afternoon of rain hit, I took a long walk, patiently waiting and appreciating everything I saw & heard. I felt much better afterwards.
After missing all (14) of the Bee-eaters in the last couple of years, I finally and very excitedly caught up with the 2 today.
A bird I've always wanted to see and they certainly didn't disappoint!😍
Anybody recently had a spiderman themed party for a 2 year old?!?
we have retrieved your balloons from the Humber shore at Spurn, feel free to come and collect them!😡
Record shot of the Kilnsea Hoopoe this morning! A lifer for me so I'm over the moon to have finally caught up with one although it was extremely mobile and elusive.
#Spurnbirds
Myrtle Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, 'butterbutt' or whatever you want to call this sweet bird has undoubtably been the highlight of my year so far and one of the most memorable birds, definitely a top favourite!
A fall of Goldcrest on easterly winds is by far one of my favourite things to see and never ceases to amaze me!
These tiny, energetic birds were coming in off the wild North Sea all day and landing on the seaweed, rocks and grass before frantically feeding. Spectacular!🤩
Great to see the Taiga Flycatcher again today at South Landing, Flamborough. Interesting to watch it in a different habitat compared to the headland when it first arrived. A Red-flanked Bluetail and a mass arrival of thrushes was an amazing bonus!
Glossy Ibis was a great way to start the day as it cruised by the caravan. First one I've ever seen and it certainly didn't disappoint, such subtly beautiful birds.
#Spurnbirds
Amazing views of the Belted Kingfisher this morning. Brilliant to see it doing various behaviours and hear it calling and was lucky enough to be close by as it perched in a near tree. An absolutely beautiful bird.
Reflecting back on photos from a wonderful trip to Shetland last month. I thoroughly enjoyed watching so many Twite around the island. A small flock showed beautifully around Sumburgh Head Lighthouse including this very obliging one😍
Finally finished processing my photos from Skokholm last month therefore, I can now get round to spamming lots of Puffin pictures!! including this one who posed beautifully in the flowers😍
This gorgeous Treecreeper was scuttling around on the woodland floor looking for seed underneath some bird feeders.
It was very elusive so had to patiently lay on the wet floor for quite a while to get this shot!
Had a beautiful experience with this Puffin at
@Bempton_Cliffs
yesterday, it landed right by me on the Cliff top, collected a few nesting materials and went on it's way again.
A beautiful Vixen with 3/4 gorgeous Cubs.
I spent 2 hours yesterday evening in the cold SE wind watching and photographing them as they ran and rolled around, playing with each other and annoying their mum as she protectively watched the area.
A very special experience♥️
