I won’t lie, 2023 has been off to a weird start…
A lot of uncertainty, confusion, feeling isolated, lonely, despairing. Creating hasn’t always been easy, but I’m proud of this piece.
Waxwing and berries ❤️
Still making progress on Bailey the barn owl. Drawing white feathers on white paper is always an interesting challenge but it’s good exercise in identifying subtle shades and tones ☺️
Absolute dream come true today seeing my first ever waxwings!! 😁 they have been my most wanted bird for like 2 years and I finally got to see and photograph them!!
As promised, my finished white-backed vulture drawing!
Drawing this was an absolute pleasure and I hope I've managed to share their beauty with a new audience. This drawing is based on a photograph I took at the

recently...
Super excited to reveal Kenneth the Kākāpō is all finished! Challenging at times but so glad to be raising awareness for these amazing birds.

for the awesome reference photo 😁
Here is my finished drawing of Bailey the barn owl 🦉 🪶 the second portrait in my “silent flight” collection!

Progress so far - finally starting to look much more like a kestrel! If the lighting looks a little off it’s because I’ve temporarily moved out of my studio to combat the heat!

Sorry for the sparrowhawk spam she was just so beautiful!! Over the last week caught a few glimpses/ signs that she’s around and finally got a clear view 🤩
Updated progress on my drawing of the Turkestan (red-tailed shrike) at
@Bempton_Cliffs
☺️ you can see how they got their name!
I’ll be sharing the finished piece tomorrow!

Child Ruth wanted to be a bird of prey handler more than anything... now adult Ruth is living the dream as a volunteer falconer helping to look after the birds at a local education/rescue/visitor centre! 🥰😭
You know you’re a birder when you pull over in a lay-by on a dual carriage way just to watch the red kites! 😅
Didn’t add the music myself was just on the radio at the time but seemed very fitting so left the sound on...
Finally a chance to get my green pencils out! They don’t call Kākāpō’s the might moss chicken for nothing! A very worthy winner of New Zealand’s
#birdoftheyear
Layers… layers… layers!
I’m finding this piece really emotional knowing the struggles our turtle doves are facing - especially on their migration in Europe!

Anyone else love owls??
Started this today (despite already having 2 projects on the go) because I just couldn’t resist the big amber eyes and soft fur!
The only reason I want to win the lottery is to buy as much land/green space as possible and then keep it protected from building and leave it a haven for wildlife 😭💔
Lots of bird ornaments have gone out to their new homes this week 🥰🥹
I had another long stint (3+ hrs) at the dentist this morning so I’ll be getting back regular posting and enquiries tomorrow ❤️
Look at those wings! I am absolutely falling in love with my drawing of Bailey the barn owl and all his beautiful feathers!

Felt like I’d spent a long time on Hoki the Kākāpō so I checked my tracker and yes… 80+ hours and counting 😅 making it my most time consuming piece yet!

Finally got a chance to take a better photo of my drawing of Mr Waxwing now he’s all finished 😄 I have to say I do quite like how the berries turned out!

today I thought I’d share my own progress picture too ❤️💛💙 puffins really are the best!!
Just wrapped up my first mini exhibition! I’m very shy, but it was worth it to see my artwork together as a set, meet other artists, and even few fellow bird lovers too ☺️🥰🦉
My 2nd attempt at a watercolour painting and this time it’s a snow bunting!
Still getting used to the new medium but there’s nothing more fun than learning something new 😅
Realised I haven’t shared my finished Wood Warbler drawing!
After seeing one for the first time in Wales (and forgetting my camera…) I couldn’t resist drawing one… 🍋
Finished up my Baltimore Oriole watercolour practice this afternoon… I had no idea what I was doing from start to finish but hey, it was a good time!
Side note: if anyone has any ideas for birds to draw please let me know because I have hit a WALL
Fantastic day out at the British Wildlife centre today… lots of mammals but my heart truly does belong to the birds!
Especially this handsome European eagle owl
Saw my first wild tawny owl tonight! 🤩
No photos as I was driving so here’s one I prepared earlier (this is Pudding one of the tawny owls from the falconry centre I volunteer at)
After handing my notice in April today marks my first day of being a full time wildlife artist 🎉
To thank you all for your support I’m offering 10% off all prints on my website using code FLASHSALE10
Finally revealing my finished Gyrfalcon graphite drawing!
Enjoyed the process of creating the effects of focus and blur to bring the subject to life!
Sale details in the comments 🦅🪶☺️
My lesser yellowlegs drawing is complete! Hoping one of these guys turns up in the UK soon so I can see it in person!
Please let me know what you think of my first wader drawing! ☺️
How beautiful is the redwing plumage close up? As I normally see them in flocks it wasn’t something I’d appreciated until I started drawing one!

A fluffy tawny owl to bring a little bit of joy on this dreary, January Monday. I’m also obsessed with the fact that their feet also have feathers on.
Coloured pencil on watercolour paper
My drawing of a merlin is finished! These tiny birds as so special and it’s such a shame that they still face so many threats from illegal persecution (like all birds of prey in the UK sadly).

Throwback to one of my favourite drawings of 2023 - it means even more to me now that I’ve had the chance to see waxwings in the wild and they were every bit as spectacular as I’d hoped 😄
Possibly the cutest drawing I’ve done for a while - the tiny Eurasian Wren! 🤎

Thank you to
@birder_bee
for the sweetest reference photo!
Well the inevitable happened… after having such good views of the Turkestan Shrike on Saturday it would have been rude not to draw him!

First outing with my new camera! These Egyptian geese (which I learnt are technically ducks) were more than happy to model whilst I got to grips with the new controls
96 hours later and my drawing of Hoki the Kākāpō is complete. A true ambassador for her species and a pleasure to draw 💚 she is missed by so many.

3 pieces on the go at the moment so it was a struggle to choose 1 to share this afternoon however I think it has to be an update on the Siberian Accentor and the lovely yellows to brighten up a dull day! 💛
Saw my first wood warbler in Wales last week and it was such a special moment having wanted to see one for so long…
Ofc I didn’t have my camera - so the next best thing was to recreate the moment with a drawing!
The latest coloured pencil drawing to join my raptor collection is the Merlin! This one was so much fun to draw.
Based on a reference photo I took at the

last summer 😄
Ahhh he’s finished and he’s so cute!! 🥹 maybe this is one of my favourite drawings of the year?
I mean how can you resist a long-tailed tit and blossom??
Had so much fun drawing the tawny owl this month I really want to draw more owls!!
Please suggest your favourite owl species from around the world that I could draw next!?? 🦉
My coloured pencil drawing of Bourneville the kestrel is finished!
This piece was so much fun to create - possibly one of my favourites from this year!
She’s all finished (at last)!! 🥺🐓🪶 definitely a trust the process piece, but drawing a chicken has really allowed me to appreciate the gentle beauty in them!
Had so much fun watching waxwings this week (I still can’t believe I’ve seen them!! 🥹)
Here’s a throwback from a coloured pencil drawing I created last autumn
I don’t share much of my sketchbook on here because it’s so messy but here’s the comparison of the initial bullfinch sketch versus the finished drawing!
Me and Bourneville the kestrel - one of my favourite birds I work with (but don’t tell the others)
This week he celebrated his 12th birthday! 🥳 Happy birthday old boy
