@jon_barron @docmilanfar I don't think it is "not quite right". Those are implementation details (as you said, swapped loop order) for two roughly equivalent lenses. It is not super rigorously defined, so whatever helps us build intuition and think and communicate about problems is "right". :)

@jon_barron @docmilanfar And in the above, we can easily swap a triangle with the splat. So for rasterizing GS (original paper), it resembles a typical scatter use-case indeed. (And tiled culling is just one possible implementation) But once you start tracing them, you are better off with gathers.

@jon_barron @docmilanfar Tiled culling in a compute shader in the original GS implementation is 100% gather as well. Computer graphics flip back and forth (ray tracing? gathers; rasterization? scatters) but it doesn't matter, they are equivalent (up to a potential dramatic inefficiency/sparsity).
