Let's hold Medway Council to account. They need to do more to stop antisocial & dangerous behaviour at Barnfield Recreation Ground, the Coney Banks in Chatham.
Residents deserve better from
@medway_council
. They are fed up with the lack of action to address the daily antisocial behaviour problem of motorbikes & quadbikes on Barnfield Recreation Ground. This is council land but they fail to tackle the problem. It is shameful.
@KentPoliceRoads
You should visit Wayfield Rd & Churchill Rd in Chatham- there are a number of vehicles (bikes & cars) that have no MOT or tax but are still on the public roads. It's ridiculous.
The signs put up by
@medway_council
didn't last long! These were along the footpath between Walderslade Rd & Cherbourg Crescent. Already torn down & vandalised. The Council need a better way of dealing with the nuisance bikes. Signs, without action aren't good enough.
Notice this poor woman clutching her dog in fear as four bikes encircle her in an intimidatory way. It's disgraceful. Barnfield is unsafe, yet
@medway_council
do NOTHING to tackle the problem. Someone's going to get hurt & when they do the Council will have blood on their hands.
Residents are STILL waiting for a response from
@cllrtrisosborne
@vincemaple
on when the 'naming & shaming' of nuisance riders will start.
Why is this such a difficult question to answer? Cllr Osborne announced this would happen but since then has provided no details.
#Nolan
Finally, some signage, but only after social media pressure from this account. When will permanent signage be installed? Signage needs to be fixed. Also
@cllrtrisosborne
, bikes / quads often enter Barnfield via the Victory Academy entrance. Will signage be added there?
Non stop antisocial behaviour at Barnfield Recreation Ground today. Off-road petrol bikes& fires deliberately lit by teenagers. This is now beyond a joke. Residents demand immediate action from the landowners
@medway_council
.
@tracey_crouch
@cllrtrisosborne
- this has to stop!
ANOTHER example of a police force (West Midlands) who have been given the tools by their PCC to tackle antisocial behaviour from off-road bikes/quads. It is deplorable that
@matthewinkent
hasn't given
@KentPoliceMed
these resources. I'm sure
@DccKent
would welcome this investment
Let us hope that today we have some visible policing from
@KentPoliceMed
@DccKent
.
@cllrtrisosborne
- it would be wonderful if we saw some of the Council's enforcement officers too! Or do they wear invisibility cloaks? A PSPO only works if it is enforced
@medway_council
.
It's been a busy day of antisocial behaviour from idiots on nuisance vehicles today at Barnfield. Would be helpful if
@KentPoliceMed
or enforcement officers from
@medway_council
attended to enforce the PSPO. Bikes need to be seized!
@cllrtrisosborne
If Barnfield Recreation Ground was privately owned, a statutory notice could be issued against the landowners for permitting a statutory nuisance to occur. However, as this is council owned, no such notice can be issued. How is this fair? Residents demand action
@cllrtrisosborne
These repeat offenders were on Barnfield Recreation Ground yesterday (see yesterday's tweet), riding their bike illegally & in an antisocial & dangerous way.
@KentPoliceMed
informed.
@EstherMCook
@cllrtrisosborne
@tracey_crouch
The sooner the PSPO is introduced the better!
@cllrtrisosborne
Hopefully this isn't a one off publicity stunt Tristan. It needs regular enforcement. Residents liok forward to seeing a regular police and
@medway_council
enforcement officer presence.
Today 8 different off-road motor vehicles causing a nuisance at Barnfield; showing NO regard for the safety of other users of the field. ZERO enforcement officers from
@medway_council
- unless they were wearing invisibility cloaks?
@cllrtrisosborne
@vincemaple
@EstherMCook
@cllrtrisosborne
@Conservatives
Glad to see you mention nuisance biking. You are right. Residents do expect better. The PSPO cannot come in soon enough on Barnfield Recreation Ground.
Another example of a police force (Derby) whose PCC has given them the tools needed to tackle antisocial behaviour from off-road bikes. Our PCC
@matthewinkent
needs to put his money where his mouth is & give
@KentPoliceMed
the tools they need!
@DccKent
@kent_police
Two more motorbikes currently riding around Barnfield Recreation Ground. Makes 4 different motorbikes today....
@medway_council
- when are you finally going to tackle this problem once and for all? It is unfair that residents have to be impacted by your lack of action!
Take that as a warning
@KentPoliceMed
,
@medway_council
. You are NOT above the law. You have proven yourselves to be inept at tackling the nuisance vehicles problem. Expect to be sued when someone is injured or killed. Your lack of action is as bad as the riders!
@Mayor_Medway
Not sure it's looking beautiful at Barnfield Recreation Ground. Unfortunately the ground is damaged from off-road bikes/quads. Where is the PSPO & signage that residents were promised? Residents are bitterly disappointed and feel let down by the lack of action and urgency.
Congratulations
@cllrtrisosborne
. Let's hope that tackling ASB at Barnfield once & for all will be high up on your agenda. Now that purdah is over, we look forward to hearing your plans. It can't be right that users of Council land have their safety at risk.
#GeneralElection2024
Q: cllr Osborne, please can you tell residents when
@medway_council
will start naming and shaming nuisance riders?
A: SILENCE
Despite being asked over 20 times now,
@cllrtrisosborne
has not answered. For someone who says being transparent is important, this is perplexing.
@MedwayMessenger
These are needed at Barnfield Recreation Ground. Perhaps that way residents wouldn't have to put up with the daily problem of illegal bikes on the greenspace! This is
@medway_council
owned land but they take zero responsibility, despite the impact on residents.
It's been a busy weekend so far of antisocial behaviour on Barnfield Recreation Ground. It's a pity
@KentPoliceMed
didn't deploy their drones.
@medway_council
- when are you going to take responsibility & act? Why should residents have to put up with your lack of action?
According to
@MedwayLabour
Medway Council
@medway_council
isn't to blame for the antisocial behaviour occurring at Barnfield. What rubbish! It's Council owned land. Time to take responsibility. Residents were promised permanent signage & additional CCTV. Neither have materialised
This blog will be regularly updated with news about Barnfield & the problems associated with antisocial behaviour from off-road bikes & quads.

It hasn't made a difference at all Cllr Osborne. Please don't gaslight. Weve seen:
- ZERO enforcement officers from
@medway_council
- ZERO evidence of naming and shaming - as promised by you
- NO permanent signage around the area
- NO engagement about broken antibike gates
The problems with antisocial behaviour on Barnfield Recreation Ground has been going on for years.
@medway_council
have been negligent in their lack of action. It is an utter disgrace. Hopefully change will come - it is LONG overdue!
@kent_police
Excuse me
@matthewinkent
. Instead of posing for photoshoots why don't you get down to Barnfield Recreation Ground and see the antisocial behaviour for yourself?
It is disappointing that:
A - no signage has yet to be installed (deadline was 31/3)
B - no explanation or response from either
@vincemaple
or
@cllrtrisosborne
regarding the signage
The Nolan Principles focus on transparency and honesty. So far this is not evident.
A reminder of what has been promised by
@cllrtrisosborne
. The signage that will 'certainly' be introduced hasn't materialised by the 31 March deadline. A very simple question- when will the signage be installed at Barnfield? Is it just delayed or were we misled?
#NolanPrinciples
Busy weekend for illegal riding of motorbikes & quadbikes over on Barnfield Recreation Ground. Have been 6 different bikes / quadbikes so far. Totally ridiculous. One's currently over there now- a regular yob. No sign of
@KentPoliceMed
at all over the weekend
@ScottDawsonKP
1 of 3 - Hey
@MedwayTories
- you really ought to get Howard Doe, portfolio holder for greenspaces, to pull his finger out & deal with the antisocial behaviour with off-road petrol bikes & quads at Barnfield Recreation Ground in Chatham. This
@medway_council
owned land is the
Why is it that travellers who tresspass at Bluewater are moved on the same day but at Barnfield Recreation Ground they are STILL there?
@cllrtrisosborne
what is taking so long & why is Kent Police able to take action promptly at Bluewater but not here? Feels very unfair.
Excuse me
@medway_council
, when are you going to start taking the concerns of residents seriously? You need to act. This is a major safety issue & your lack of action is negligent.
@tracey_crouch
, can you hold the Council to account?
#MedwayTaskForce
Hello
@cllrtrisosborne
. Please can you clarify. In your post on 31 March, you stated the introduction of the PSPO would lead to nuisance bikes being seized. However, the
@medway_council
press release states differently- a £100 fine. Which is correct?
@DanWatkins
@matthewinkent
Definitely won't vote for him. He's inept and doesn't engage with people. Useless at tackling antisocial behaviour. Sooner he's gone the better.
@cllrtrisosborne
@UKLabour
@vincemaple
Meanwhile, there have been a number of off-road vehicles causing a nuisance and committing antisocial behaviour at Barnfield Recreation Ground today! No sign of council enforcement officers, or police.
Such an ironic tweet. Due to
@medway_council
's incompetency to tackle the nuisance vehicle problems at Barnfield, it is NOT safe to use any longer by the general public.
@rdulieu
- what do you plan to do? Council owned land is not being looked after by the council.

So...
@KentPoliceMed
called over an hour ago to Barnfield Recreation Ground due to two off-road bikes causing antisocial behaviour. Hour later, no police & bikes still there.
@cllrtrisosborne
@medway_council
@matthewinkent
- is this what u call treating the problem high priority?
WARNING - you ride an off-road bike or quadbike on Barnfield Recreation Ground, you will be reported to
@KentPoliceMed
. Photos of the yobs will also be shared with the authorities and shared via social media. Residents are fed up.
Thank you
@GabrielDMorris
for highlighting the lack of action by
@medway_council
. The issue at
#Barnfield
has been going on for over 20 years & is getting worse not better. The Council do not care about the safety concerns. It is shameful.
Excuse me
@medway_council
, when are you going to start taking the concerns of residents seriously? You need to act. This is a major safety issue & your lack of action is negligent.
@tracey_crouch
, can you hold the Council to account?
#MedwayTaskForce
Let's hope that today we have some visible police presence at Barnfield Recreation Ground. The daily antisocial social behaviour caused by motor bikes & quadbikes is ridiculous. Despite this land being owned by
@medway_council
, they do little to prevent this.
@DccKent
@EstherMCook
But what have you done over the last 14 months since being the Councillor for Wayfield? The problem has got worse, rather than better. Residents deserve better Cllr Cook. They want to see action now. Enough of the rhetoric.
@CAyLabour
@MedwayTories
Can you answer two simple questions:
1. How many Council Enforcement officers are enforcing the PSPO?
2. When will the naming and shaming start?
Residents near Barnfield Recreation Ground in Chatham are perplexed as to why such a dispersal order has not been put in place at Barnfield, despite
@KentPoliceMed
&
@medway_council
being well aware of the antisocial and disorderly activity occurring on a daily basis.
A Section 34 dispersal order has been instigated following reports of anti-social and disorderly behaviour in
#Chatham
Town Centre. An additional Section 60 order has also been approved for officers to search anyone suspected of being involved in violent crime in the area. 1/2
Below is a quote from
@vincemaple

Perhaps if you truly believe in the importance of greenspaces, you'd do more to stop nuisance vehicles causing misery to residents' lives near Barnfield Recreation Ground.
This is Council owned land. Time to act & take responsibility.
Thank you
@GabrielDMorris
for running this article about the historic and ongoing problem from off-road vehicles at Barnfield Recreation Ground. Whilst the PSPO is a step in the right direction, there needs to be proper enforcement from
@KentPoliceMed
&
@medway_council
This photo ought to be a wake up call to
@KentPoliceMed
@medway_council
@MedwayCSP
about the importance of ENFORCEMENT of the PSPO at Barnfield. People should'nt have to cower in fear due to idiots acting dangerously. We demand tougher action! Seize the bikes!
@DccKent
.
@KentPoliceMed
,
@medway_council
&
@MedwayCSP
are inept. They're paying lip service to the PSPO. No decisive action taken to address the nuisance bikes at Barnfield. When a child is seriously injured or killed due to their lack of action, this tweet will come back to haunt them.
Excuse me
@matthewinkent
but when are you going to hold
@KentPoliceMed
to account for their lack of action to respond to residents' reports of ASB & the resulting misery that is caused as a result of their lack of action. It is beyond a joke. The police need to act.
@medway_council
You are failing SPECTACULARLY to tackle the problem!
- ZERO evidence of enforcement officers
- NOT fixing vandalised antibike gates
At Barnfield there is no evidence of you acting to solve the problem occurring on YOUR land.
You are a disgrace.
@rdulieu
@vincemaple
@SpyderJocko
@cllrtrisosborne
@medway_council
Accept it won't be fixed overnight, but residents have been complaining to
@medway_council
for over 15 years about the off-road bikes / quads at Barnfield. Residents have waited long enough and want to now see results.
Hey
@matthewinkent
@PCCKent
, perhaps you could learn something from Matthew Barber, the PCC for Thames Valley who has funded motorbikes to tackle off-road bikes. Why don't you fund
@KentPoliceMed
?
For too long, residents have been failed by
@MedwayTories
@medway_council
- particularly on tackling antisocial behaviour. Let's hope change is coming & the issue with motorbikes & quadbikes is dealt with seriously at Barnfield Recreation Ground

The driver was ticketed for 4 traffic offences & will face court.
