Today's @Bankrate survey has the average 30-yr fixed mortgage rate at 4.73%. This has been the largest and fastest run-up in mortgage rates in 28 years. Last was in 1994, when the Fed surprised the market with large and unexpected rate hikes, hammering the bond market.

@LaMonicaBuzz Cutting rates at this point is symbolic more than anything. The liquidity measures are what is needed. Without proper functioning of markets and access to credit, problems go from bad to worse in a hurry. That being said, Fed still on the road to 0% - and soon.

Today’s rate cut unwinds the last of the 9 rate hikes the Fed made between 2015 -2018. Not only is a quarter-point move largely inconsequential to household budgets, but credit card and home equity rates are still notably higher than they were two or three years ago
