You don't need to be an expert in #Bangladesh politics to deduce who Hasnat is referring to here: #AwamiLeague-associated people. The quote has been borrowed from a #journalist turned functionary of the Yunus Govt, Golam Mortoza, recently appointed as the Press Councilor of Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC. He made the remark in a recent talk-show on how the IG and SAD/JNK should treat their political opponents. Alarming levels of dehumanising on part of the IG-SAD-JNK clique against the AL on display. It would not be far-fetched to even term these comments "genocidal dog-whistles". But then again, this dehumanising has been ongoing for six months now. There is an unofficial rule in Bangladesh now- anyone even remotely linked to the AL has to be identified as "fascist" or "associate of fascists". When that is not followed to the letter, even press come under attack (like Dr. Yunus' Press Secretary's recent rant against BBC). The dehumanising efforts serve a more practical purpose for the IG-SAD-JNK people. It legitimises #AwamiLeague associated people being subjected to arbitrary mass arrests and detention, having their homes and businesses burnt down or razed to the grounds, lynched by mobs, or killed in law enforcement custody. In Bangladesh, the so-called anti fascists are giving the clearest demonstration of how fascism should properly be done. First, (student) protestors destroy Sheikh Mujib's house in road 32. Then they destroy a series of other houses owned by Awami League politicians, or connected to Awami League supporters, around the country. But who do the police lead an operation against? Yes, you guessed it, none other than local Awami League politicians. The justification? A rather questionable narrative given by students about being attacked in Gazipur when they were, supposedly, trying to save an Awami League politician's house (see yesterday's tweet) The police action is reminiscent of the kinds of narratives used by Awami League government/police pre-August 5th to justify its police operations in which BNP/Jamaat opposition members/supporters were arbitrarily arrested. I would guess that many/most of the Awami Leaguers being arrested in the bizarrely (and inappropriately) named, "Operation Devil Hunt" are being arrested simply becuase they support(ed) the Awami League. This is all very very worrying. The government seems to have allowed itself to be persuaded to go down a path of arbitrary revenge. It must stop.
