The Athletic and the LA Times both independently researched the sign stealing, looking for proof that that was why the Astros won. But they found the data proved the opposite ... that the Astros were not helped by the scheme. The Astros won in spite of the self-imposed crutch.

Yep. They also got to the World Series in 2019 without cheating. And since the system was proven to be ineffective in multiple exhaustive studies, it’s also true that the Astros won the 2017 World Series in spite of Carlos Beltran’s cheating method and not because of it.

As a father of a catcher, I can tell you that this always happens on bases empty ground balls to the infield or outfield hits to right where the first baseman went for it.
On infield balls, it’s to get to an overthrow. On right field balls, it’s to be there behind the runner.

I took this screenshot on Wednesday night during the Astros’ series finale in Seattle. Even then, I irrationally had a feeling the Astros were going to win the division, overcoming this 3 game deficit with 4 games to go. We Astros fans are so spoiled that we think this way.

Back-up cameras make it much easier. But the real reason is that it’s safer to back in to a spot when you know no one is behind you versus backing out later when someone could be zooming by.

Rangers left fielder Evan Carter went to the Nelson Cruz school of catching fly balls.
I think that ball was catchable if he maintains his speed and dives.
Turning around to play it off the wall does nothing for him. Not sure why he turned to play it off the wall. Rookie.

That’s the easy to believe scapegoat at least. The Athletic, Duke University, and the LA Times all did exhaustive studies to prove you right, and all three unfortunately came to the same conclusion. The sign stealing scandal did not help the Astros. The Astros were just better.

I understand why the player was not wearing his sunglasses. Sometimes the lighting is such that wearing the glasses hinders your ability to see regular action clearly. The old school flip shades come to mind.
