Microbial genomics of the Great Lakes @ Cornell. 🏳️🌈Scientist, Davidson Fellow, 🇮🇪Fulbright (he/him). Code-obsessed animal lover who likes to be outside.
As
#ASLO24
is wrapping up, I want to share a project I'm so proud of: MicrobeMapper! MicrobeMapper is an interactive web app I built in
#shiny
which allows you to explore the spatial distribution of microbial taxa and water chemistry in Lake Ontario.
@FelixJBerrios
I’m Gus (he/him)! I’m a microbial ecologist who studies the bacteria of the Great Lakes. Outside of work I run/swim/bike/ski/anything outside. I also have two dogs, two cats, and five chickens 🧑🌾🐈⬛🐈⬛🐕🐕🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔

Hello!
- I’m Gus (he/him)
- I’m an aquatic microbiologist studying genome evolution in the Great Lakes
- I’m a runner, gardener, and amateur home renovator
- I’m named after the chubby mouse from Cinderella

I'm Gus! I'm a gay microbiologist studying Staph infections at Georgetown. I love nordic skiing, backpacking, and loose-leaf tea. Also I have two STUNNING rats named Francie and Tammy!
Delighted to commit to
@Cornell
Microbiology for my PhD! A huge thanks to my research mentors
@bacteriality
,
@stxLiam
, Rhian Waller, and
@SBrinsmade
for getting me there! Here’s to five years of environmental microbiology, teaching, and learning! (My cat recovered)
I won a Leadership Award from
@CornellOISE
! Very grateful to have my work building inclusive coding communities here at

be recognized. Coding is hard, but it shouldn’t be scary!
Ready to present my poster with

on S. aureus virulence at the
@WindRiverConf
! Haven't had a reason to dress up in about a year so I was excited for business casual 🤵
🚨🚨Cool S. aureus lipid metabolism!🚨🚨
Our new paper in
@MolMicroEditors
shows an novel path to branched-chain lipids using aldehydes. Branched-chain lipids are essential for S. aureus viruelnce! Read it here:

Do you like lipids? Two-component systems? Hypervirulent bacteria? We've got it all! So excited to share this work with

@StarlCone
where we find branched-chain fatty acids are essential for virulence in S. aureus!

Sad to be leaving
@GUBiology
but excited about my next move - starting at
@CornellMicrobio
in the fall! I also made a personal website describing my research and coding projects so far. Feel free to click through and get to know me a little better!
Even in the middle of winter, exciting things are happening in Irish
#seaweed
! The pepper dulse is spicy, the sea spaghetti is sprouting, and you can always find dillisk (tho I'm told it's sweetest in late summer). So happy my research takes me to the beautiful

This is one of my proudest achievements – I learned so much producing this paper and I’m so excited to share it with the world. Follow this link to learn about a cool system where certain membrane lipids help activate virulence in MRSA!
A year ago i landed from Ireland for what was supposed to be a week-long trip...and ended up staying awhile. It's been a crazy year but so grateful I got to spend it with this amazing guy!
A week on the
@EPAresearch
Lake Guardian done! We collected hundreds of microbial samples across Lake Ontario. These data will help us understand the structure, function, and evolution of the microbial communities in the Great Lakes!
I made my first
#RStats
package! The doublr package launches a shiny app which allows you to interactively calculate doubling times from growth curve data. I learned so much making this and I can't wait to improve it :) Get it now from github using the screenshot code
Solved a common and annoying lab problem. Made a shiny app which lets you convert a 96-well plate "map" into long format. You can either enter values manually or copy and paste from Excel. It's saved in a package of functions I've written for my lab 👨💻
#rstats
Loved reading this paper! Very understandable to an eco/eco newbie like me and satisfying experimental corroboration with the models. Thanks

Exciting news - I'm gonna be a
@NOAADigCoast
Margaret A. Davidson Fellow! I'll use metagenomics to study the population dynamics of cyanobacteria in the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve. Learn more about the program here:
So excited that this work is public! Can S. aureus make branched-chain lipids out of branched chain aldehydes? What started as a wild hypothesis from looking at KEGG pathways gets some experimental validation!
One of those really great academic days. Had a paper submitted, finished prepping a 148-sample 16S library, and submitted a NOAA Davidson Fellowship. A lot of things I've been working hard on and I'm proud of getting them done, regardless of the results!
I am a big list person. Like I cannot do anything without making a list. I cannot function without my lists. My lists control my life. I have a list of lists.
Sorry to get corny on main, but
#ASLO24
felt like a paradigm shift for my science. These past five days have totally changed my vision of what’s possible and expanded my worldview. And the people have been so welcoming and passionate! Mind blowing is an understatement!
The
@Macnas
parade was an unforgettable Irish experience! Can't wait to celebrate Oíche Shamhna (Halloween) in the land where it originated!

Super grateful finishing my first rotation with
@lizljohnson
and her amazing lab! I got to use a Coy chamber, flow cytometer, AND a mass spectrometer. Threw in some click chemistry for good measure too!
Told my boyfriend I needed 2.5 hours of uninterrupted writing time. In those two hours, he has knocked to:
- Drop off two different snacks
- Wash and refill my waterbottle
- Make me a blueberry smoothie
- Use our dog to guilt me for working
He is trying his best
Giving my talk at
#ASLO24
today in an incredible session around microbes and biogeochemistry. Excited to share more about the microbes of Lake Ontario!
I think it’s great for grad students to understand how they are budgeted. Our time is so much more valuable than we think, especially compared to materials. Get what you need to get the experiment done and don’t cut corners - it’s cheaper in the long run!
Finished off another fantastic cruise on the
@EPAGreatLakes
Lake Guardian for the Lake Erie Cooperative Science Monitoring Initiative. Excited to process these samples to learn more about the microbial diversity of Lake Erie!
That’s all for now. I love coding, and increasingly I love teaching others to code as well 💕 So grateful to work with an amazing team including
@micro_marian
,
@cassidyprints
,
@sophiaaredas
, and my amazing colleagues at Cornell Micro!
Had a script with >600 lines of code analyzing data from six growth curves. Spent an hour today writing a function to reduces that analysis to 86 lines of code, and will make adding new data easy. Feeling proud 🤗

CUBScout.jl v1.0.0 is officially out! 🎉
This is my first package in
@JuliaLanguage
. CUBScout helps you analyze codon usage, quickly! To celebrate, I used CUBScout to analyze how codon usage changes from the start to end of a gene. Read about it here:
