@blakerking93 @agelston Haha yeah sounded eerily close to my prof for power systems analysis - it’s a right of passage I guess!

Yes, agreed on the primary energy needs point. However, in the industry when we talk about “load growth” we are referring to electricity demand, not primary energy, which will have to increase with electrification (unless offset by efficiency gains though in my view that is unlikely with the scale of electrification that we’re talking about)

@duncan__c and I’m not entirely sure what you meant by destiny, but i think the grid will always be needed but will eventually look like a true macro grid with many micro grids contained within

Interregional transmission has ZERO reliability value as long as balancing authorities can recall both firm and non-firm exports by declaring an EEA1. Leaning on your neighbor is not a long term option for resource adequacy.

RT @JohnArnoldFndtn: Power prices across the nation right now show the huge need for more interregional transmission. Note that SPP and MIS…

“Public process” where a significant portion of the data is redacted and not shared in most cases. (Another argument for transparency standards). And I think you’re misunderstanding my point, which isn’t to say that RTOs have more/better retirement processes but to point out that they do have processes to at least assess network reliability and it isn’t as simple as shutting the plant down as implied in the article

@fredstaffordcs Haha holistic planning isn’t really happening in most areas even outside of RTOs. Fair point wrt workforce impacts though! Still a far cry from “no one has any say in what gens retire in an RTO”

If the anti-RTO crowd is actually concerned with consumer protection, it’d be nice to see them advocate for minimum transparency requirements. The amount of data (both planning and operations) readily available in RTO regions versus traditional regions is stark

@tylerhnorris @MattZeitlin The “it’s not anybody saying whether it’s a good idea or not for a certain unit to shut down” line isn’t really accurate either. All units have to request approval to retire. Generally that process assesses network reliability, not resource adequacy but still..,

Risks…? The issue is, the even though the data center load growth forecasts can be duplicative, the power industry’s pace of change will still be the limiting factor to new development
