A quick look at #USAID support over the years by categories. In real terms, obligations were declining till 2000 and economic development was being substituted with security spending. Post 2000 one sees a ballooning of support for different programs, notably health and humanitarian assistance. Education and environment were the smallest categories in the past years. Probably also partially subsumed within other categories. The detailed graph, highlights the most important subcategories: stablization, protection, growth, and HIV/AIDS. Direct admin costs are probably staffing costs. #policyviz

🚀 #Stata #packages updated on #SSC: - geoflow: v1.0 is finally up on SSC. Plot spatial flows as arcs. Combines very well with geoplot and geoboundary. ( - geoboundary v1.2: further optimizations to allow fetching boundary data from multiple resources. Now can also directly convert data to Stata shapefiles and geoframes. ( - spider v1.53: added new features to allow micro customizations, such as in the legends etc. Fixed some minor bugs etc. ( - polarbar v1.7: Users can now plot markers on top of the bars. Fixed some bugs where legend entries were being missed under some conditions. ( 💡In the #pipeline: - Fine-tuning legends and plot regions are some of the most requested features. This has been currently patchy and implementation varies in the packages. This will be homogenized slowly across packages. - Quite a lot of requests are for adding additional info such as scatters and lines, e.g. in ridgeline, polarspike, polarbar, marimekko etc. These features will also be added slowly to the more frequently-used packages. ✍ Upcoming #trainings: Sign up for the Stata UK Masterclass in Maps on March 14th. This is an intensive 6-hours workshop where we will learn quite a lot about maps! This is offered just once a year so sign up if you want to know all about the latest developments. More info:

🚀 Launching a new #Stata package #geoflow that allows users to generate spatial arcs. This package is a culmination of over a year of work for building stable core dependencies. It also brings us one step closer to flexibly plot network data (more on generic applications later this year). Given the complex structure of spatial network data (nodes, flows, attributes, projections etc.), the use is not so straightforward but I will add more examples and tutorials soon. From now till March, there are several trainings scheduled around maps and spatial data so expect some improvements in the coming months. Do give it a try! More info: Up soon on #SSC!

🌍 @Stata #geoboundary version 1.2 is now out: 👍 option geoframe added to directly convert layers into geoplot ready frames. 👍#WorldBank's official global ADM0 boundary version 3 has now been added. Get it directly: geoboundary WLD, replace convert remove source(worldbank) geoframe Official link here: 👍geoboundary meta, XXX added to allow users to recover the backend meta information for the two global databases: #geoboundaries and #gadm. Use specific or fuzzy searches. See screenshot below for recovering the ISO3 codes for World Bank's LAC region. 👍 Several checks added to avoid random crashes. Better display of background processes. Other public global databases will be added soon. More info: Up soon on SSC!

🚀 @Stata package #joyplot is now bumped to v1.8 with the following major changes: - Complete rewrite of base routines to make the package must faster. Rendering should now take a fraction of the time compared to older versions. - Users can now specify variable lists to plot multiple ridgeline plots. Color assignments adjust accordingly. This also enables the legend and legend options. These were highly requested features. - Plotting variations over time now need the time() option. - New option mark() added to mark peaks as markers or droplines. This option is still beta and will be updated in later releases. - Dozens of enhancements to make this package more robust. It was last updated in 2023 so these changes are long due! More info and examples: Up soon on SSC.

My annual thread of my favorite games of the year! This year I tried more indie stuff, independent studios, and mostly survivial games. Here are my top 3 according to #Steam: 🥉 #DomeKeeper. I have been playing Dome Keeper since last year. You end up on an alien planet and have to dig up resources and upgrade your base to fend off periodic alien attacks. Different base types, weapons, and utilities keep this game fun. Also controller friendly and the pixel graphics give it a retro vibe. 🥈#FrostPunk2. Frost Punk 2 unlike its predecessor, is less base micro management and more politics management to appease factions at odds with each other and pushing for different technologies and societal values. And all of this while ensuring that the base is function relatively smoothly in freezing temperatures to ensure sufficient food supply, materials, and resources are being produced, and stockpiled especially during storms when everything shuts down. The design and music is just amazing! 🥇 #OxygenNotIncluded. This game is just wow and it needs more awards! One starts on an asteroid with 3 duplicants & one has to expand the base while managing oxygen supply, other gasses, water, food, waste, temperature, air pressure, raw materials & what not. The amount of detail is mind boggling where gasses and temperature diffuse and different building materials, liquids, gasses have to be used to manage plants, duplicants, critters. One also needs to harnessing all the biomes in the asteroid to run an effective base. The whole automation panel when unlocked has enough details to build a whole computer system inside (think all combinations of AND, OR, NOT gates). Also don't get fooled by it's toon-like animation. One has to fail a few times just to get a sort of decent base running. Also just got a new DLC! On the other titles: Tried Diablo 4 and it is ok. It is just a polished version of D3. Overwatch 2 might have redeemed itself a bit and is actually more fun again. With the kids: Forza Horizon 5 sometimes since it has the Hot Wheels tracks. Fall Guys is always fun. And Beat Saber on Meta Quest 3. But the charm of 3D games goes down fast. It is a heavy gadget and straining on the eyes. Still have to try Half Life Alyx.

Hi all, another year almost gone and I am signing out of work for this year. Today on the #StataGuide on #Medium a bit of a recap of 2024, all the exciting things that have happened, and what can be expected in 2025. A few things I touch upon are: - Coding has not stopped and will continue - Packages are reaching a stable point - Why we need human-centric design systems - Why one needs a modular approach to coding - Minor efforts compound over time (the golden rule for stable levels of productivity) - Mapping in Stata developments - Scaling up of the Stata Gallery on Medium - What does it mean to code "free" Stata packages. In between my trips to Upper Austria and Lahore I might still post some fun stuff here and there. Otherwise, have safe and happy holidays and we will hit the ground running in 2025! #thecodemustflow #Stata #coding

A shift in global external debt balances. Countries did paid more in principal repayments and interests than disbursements in 2023. The disbursement trend also declined post 2022. Don't know if this is a data issue, but this is where balance line goes negative. #WorldBank #IDS #IDR 2024 report
