Encouraging to see Arteta use Xhaka as a no.8 pushing up between-the-lines v Brentford. Always thought the move would open Arsenal's game more, because as we know, the aim with positional play is to overload on one side, then switch to the free man other.. 1/3

Odegaard has such a tremendous feel for the tempo of the game. Each pass is so well weighted, with a message. Smith Rowe by comparison, is more about sudden changes of speed, but mostly favouring safe, one-touch passing. So currently, wide seems to suit him (team) more.

I think I've accepted Calum Chambers will be Arsenal's first choice right-back (in the back of the mind, I think we fear another "Montero", but those games happen sometimes). He's powerful, tall, good under pressure and whips a great ball.

The best thing about that Ozil pass is the weight of it. Had to take the pace off it as there wasn’t enough room left on the pitch, yet fast enough to meet Kolasinac’s run

Really good breakdown of Arsenal's approach from Luton coach, Rob Edwards, about changing the formation from 3-5-2 (which I wrote recently Arsenal have been very good against) to 4-5-1 to counter the wide triangles, and the different ways Arsenal build-up

It’s hard to convince others how good Koscielny was because he would then go and do something stupid. But on song, especially during the 13/14 season, he was a aesthetically a dream to watch because he was so independent and daring, a risk-taker, like this

Xhaka generally wasn't tempted to come deep for the ball (it also meant Tierney could play more on the cover, less reliant to make the width). Instead, as Arsenal knew Brentford would leave space behind and to the side of the 3 CMs, Xhaka kept on breaking forward. 2/3

In recent weeks, Arteta has shown he's getting closer to the style that he wants, but as this game shows, the system really only works with his first 11. To make your philosophy effective, you essentially sign like-for-like players so they can continue playing with the same ideas

Arsenal not convincingly replicating the inverted full-back role, and all the rotations that come with it, with Tierney. Without Zinchenko's technical quality, Arsenal look more functional. If Tierney has to play, I'd argue use Zinchenko at LCM instead of Xhaka.

Mourinho has basically got Sissoko or Hojberg, depending on which side the ball is, to play as 2nd full-backs, dropping in between the CB and FB, and stopping City's no.10s from running into that space

These two Valencia games have been the best Aubameyang and Lacazette have played together. I feel like Auba prefers not to have the physical confrontation, but instead moves wide, into spaces, whilst Laca holds off defenders, lays it off. Both worked so hard.

Surprised by the change of tune of some people on Matteo Guendouzi. The guy’s got so much personality with the ball and he will become great in the final third. I think Arsenal fans as a whole have become a bit cautious, and are a little bit frightened by Guendouzi’s arrogance

Really hope we can sign Odeegard permanently. Initially, my fear was that he was quite classical, that he wants the game played at his (albeit probing, inventive) pace. But he's contributing now in all phases, coming deep to make extra CM, scoring, and a real leader mentality

Arteta's approach, based on positional play, reduces the game to 1v1s. For that reason, we need to move on from Xhaka - he forces the team to play behind the ball. R Martinez once said "a possession based game is less about passing, more about creating 1v1s all over the pitch"

The switch, bringing Pepe (and Nketiah) on made the difference. I don't think it gave Arsenal balance - if anything, it opened the game up a bit more, made it more end-to-end, and as such, we had a bit more space to create better shooting chances.

A few things on Arsenal 2-1 Wolves: 1. Arteta said AFC build-up differently "depending what the opponent does." As such, I think we have found it more beneficial playing in the last three games (Brentford, Lens, Wolves), against 3-5-2. The patterns feel more natural, automatic.
